Making Swim Lessons Safer During Covid

MAKING SWIM LESSONS SAFER

DURING COVID-19

LEARNING TO SWIM IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN DO TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG AND THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFE. BUT WITH THE WORLD CHANGING SO MUCH OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, SAFETY HAS TAKEN ON NEW MEANING. MANY FAMILIES ARE ASKING: ARE SWIMMING LESSONS SAFE DURING COVID-19?

Yes. The CDC has stated that “There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, or water playgrounds. Additionally, proper operation of these aquatic venues and disinfection of the water (with chlorine or bromine) should inactivate the virus.”

In addition to chemical monitoring of the pools, aquatic venues must also ensure that safety measures are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 along the pool deck and throughout the facility.

AT PELICAN ATHLETIC CLUB, WE HAVE CHANGED THE WAY WE DELIVER INSTRUCTION TO ENSURE OPTIMAL SAFETY FOR STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS.

• All instructors wear face shields and have their temperature checked

• Contactless check-in

• Sanitation stations

• Decreased ratio of children per lesson

• Staggered lessons to improve social distancing on the pool deck

• Increased cleaning and disinfecting protocols of pool equipment between lessons WHAT ARE OUR FAMILIES SAYING?

As we welcome families back into our pools, we are encouraged to hear of an overall positive experience and comfortability with the protocols and modifications we’ve implemented to keep students, parents and staff safe during swimming lessons!

"Learning how to swim was always a priority to me even before my daughter was born because of a tragic accident that happened to someone I know. Due to COVID-19 we weren’t able to start as soon as we wanted to but once they finally re-opened, I immediately enrolled my daughter. The instructors are awesome, and the staff is super friendly. Even during a time like this, I feel super comfortable because they follow protocol for the virus. It’s honestly something we look forward to once a week and I highly recommend everyone to enroll their children so they can learn basic survival skills! We absolutely love it here!" – Jessica C.

“We had an amazing first day back at the pool! It was a seamless check in, and the Instructors didn’t miss a beat. My daughter missed her classes so much and was so happy to be back in the water.” – Allison F.

“Love it! I had my worries due to COVID-19 but the staff took all the precautions as needed. My daughter was nervous to get in the water on the first day but by the end of the lesson she didn’t want to leave! – Lindsey B.

TRAINING FAMILY

Personal Trainer Josh Curry demonstrates overhead triceps move

PERSONAL TRAINER JOSH CURRY WAS DEMONSTRATING AN OVERHEAD TRICEPS MOVE TO A MEMBER OF HIS METABOLIC STRENGTH CLASS WHEN SHE OFFERED A CRITIQUE OF HIS STYLE. "THAT LOOKS GOOD," JANE NEEL SAID. "NOW, CAN YOU DO TEN REPS FOR ME!" Neel's quip was quick, but her relationship with a trainer who also happens to be her son lends itself to some banter. "It's fun to have my son as my trainer, but it’s a role reversal," Neel said. "When he was young, he had to trust me, and with a trainer, you have to trust them. So when he leaves me in a plank position and walks away to assist another group member, I choose to trust he is not trying to get me back for the times I forgot him in timeout but a part of the workout to be planking for a LONG time.”

Curry has plenty of opportunities for family interaction as he is one of 17 family members who are members of Pelican Athletic Club. The ages of Curry’s clan range from 9-year-old cousins Cannon and Maddox Sabathier to his Aunt Rae, 76, and Uncle Charlie Ingram, 77.

Maddox and Cannon will be participating in Curry’s foundations class in the summer. Foundations is a movement skill development class designed to stimulate coordination, stability and agility.

Aunt Rae and Uncle Charlie get periodic consultations with him to update their fitness routines to help them maintain strength, conditioning and balance as they get older.

bell academy classes giving his family several opportunities to improve their health and fitness needs.

Kettlebell academy is unique to PAC and was developed by Curry. Successful kettlebell technique consists of very controlled dynamic movements – swinging, pushing, pulling, and almost throwing the kettlebell at a variety of angles. The weight involved can vary from five to 75-plus pounds.

“I love the physics involved with becoming a specialist in kettlebells,” Curry said. “[At the elite level], you have to be extremely engaged and technically correct, especially working with heavier weights. There's a certain element of danger which is also stimulating."

Curry's stepfather, a self-professed old school weightlifter, mainly utilized free weights and machines to stay in shape. Now he enjoys using this new piece of equipment and has developed an appreciation for fitness to improve his quality of life, longevity and health.

“I never knew what kettlebells were used for before taking Josh's kettlebell classes,” Neel said. “I thought they were odd shaped dumbbells, but there are so many movements which can be done with that one piece of equipment. Kettlebells can work out so many various parts of the body.” “Most kids go through a ‘why’ phase asking a variety of questions, and then it slows down,” Jane Neel said. “For Josh, it has never slowed down. He always wants to know why and spends endless hours researching to find answers.”

Curry’s quest for constant knowledge makes him a natural for the PAC fitness department, as most of the trainers and instructors are continually researching the health and fitness world to help members.
