Just a Little

Physical Activity Can Go a Long Way!

R

egular activity is a key part of managing diabetes along with proper meal planning, taking medications as prescribed, and stress management.

When you are active, your cells become more sensitive to insulin so it can work more efficiently. Your cells also remove glucose from the blood using a mechanism totally separate from insulin during exercise.

Benefits Regular physical activity: • lowers blood pressure and cholesterol • lowers your risk for heart disease and stroke • burns calories to help you lose or maintain weight • increases your energy for daily activities • helps you sleep better • relieves stress • strengthens your heart and improves your blood circulation • strengthens your muscles and bones • keeps your joints flexible

So, exercising consistently can lower blood glucose and improve your A1C. When you lower your A1C, you may be able to take fewer diabetes pills or less insulin.

• improves your balance to prevent falls

Physical activity is also important for your overall well being, and can help with many other health conditions.

You’ll see these benefits even if you haven’t been very active before.

Sweet as Honey…

Therapeutic Benefits Of Raw Honey

H

umans have been using honey for centuries, as a treatment for imbalances in the body, the root cause of all the diseases. Now, it has been found that honey can be helpful to seniors with many health issues.

As we age, we start becoming more susceptible to chronic health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and osteoporosis. And, aging is associated with a deterioration of memory and the immune system. Honey has proven to be an effective antimicrobial activity against both pathogenic and nonpathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. The major biological properties are anti-inflammatory potential, wound healing potential, antioxidant potential, radical scavenging activity, and antiviral activity.

Benefits Of Honey A good source of antioxidants Honey is a therapeutic antioxidant containing flavonoids, phenolic acids, glucose oxidase, amino acids, and proteins, which help fight chronic conditions and infections seniors face as they age. Antioxidants have been linked to a reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes, etc.. Eating darker honey for maximum antioxidants can help remove free radicals from the body and protect against heart disease and even cancer. A good substitute for sugar Honey has a lower glycemic index than sugar. Rather than eliminating the sugar consumption completely, it will be helpful to replace it with honey and still be able to enjoy the sweetness.

Lowers Blood Pressure and Improves Cholesterol

Honey can improve a person’s high LDL cholesterol levels. Since most seniors are affected by blood pressure and cholesterol problems, eating honey on a daily basis will reduce their risks of acquiring more serious ailments in the long run. Regular honey intake reduces blood sugar levels and improves lipid metabolism by reducing total cholesterol which has the capacity to clear cardiovascular risk factors. Boosts Gastrointestinal Health & Aids in Digestion Raw honey is good at ensuring the smooth functioning of the digestive system. Honey contains certain enzymes that act as a catalyst in the digestion process, especially, to disintegrate the carbohydrates and sugars. The use of honey has proved beneficial to seniors who are diagnosed with stomach ulcers or other gastrointestinal problems. Immunity Booster Older people with a low immune system risk developing a number of health disorders. Honey, apart from having a direct antibacterial action, gets rid of the infection by immune system stimulation. Stimulates Memory Honey has a beneficial effect on the health of our brains as we age. It improves the morphology of memory-related brain areas, reduces brain oxidative stress, and increases brain-derived neurotrophic factors. The more unadulterated and unprocessed the honey the better the results you get. Honey in its raw state has a strong potential to be utilized in the health management of the elderly as a preventive and adjunct therapeutic agent.

Everything

You Need to Know About Getting a

Facelift…

Contributed by DR. CHRISTIAN H. BARNES, MD

W Dr. Christian H. Barnes is the leading facialplastic surgeon in Athens and surrounding areas. He is Board Certified and Fellowship trained. Dr. Barnes brings his vast experience to perform many types of procedures, such as rhinoplasty and other facial procedures, both surgically and minimally invasive. Patients come away rejuvenated and younger looking and feeling. Dr. Barnes understands the many needs of his patients and provides the highest skill and professionalism.

ith so much information out there about facelifts, separating fact from fiction can be difficult. Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about facelifts…

Can facial exercises work as well as a facelift? Signs of skin aging like lines, wrinkles and sagging skin can actually be made worse by repetitive facial movements, and no amount of facial exercise is going to be able to get rid of these common signs of aging. If these are your main cosmetic concerns, a facelift or other minimally invasive alternatives like injectable wrinkle treatments are most likely going to be your best options.

How do I know if it’s the right time for a facelift? If your self-confidence is affected by the appearance of sagging skin or deep lines and creases, or if minimally invasive treatments don’t seem to be cutting it anymore, a facelift may be the most effective solution. There also is not an age cutoff for getting a facelift. You know it’s time for a facelift

6

ON LIVING WELL, HEALTHY & HAPPY!

is when you hate the look of your neck and your jawline. There is nothing short of a facelift that corrects the loose skin and neck muscles and extra fat under the chin like a well-performed facelift done by an experienced expert.

What’s recovery like? For the first few days after your facelift, plan on taking it easy and having someone else around to help you. The general recovery period is usually about 10 days, and stitches are usually removed after the first week. Most people feel comfortable returning to work and other normal activities around the two-week mark.

What should I look for in a plastic surgeon? If you think a facelift could be right for you, the first step is to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon. Look for both board certification and extensive experience performing plastic surgeries like facelift and eyelid surgery when narrowing down your search. It’s also not a bad idea to schedule an in-office consultation to help you make a final decision.

Dr. Barnes understands that patients opt for facial plastic surgery for a number of reasons. Whether you are looking to accentuate a feature, slow down the appearance of aging or minimize downtime, there are many options available to help you achieve your unique goals.

Helping to Navigate

Disability Guidelines

O

ften people needlessly delay in filing claims that result in loss of benefits. When a person becomes disabled and expect to be unable to work for at least 12 months, a claim should be filed at the earliest opportunity. We like to become involved as early in the process as possible. Anyone even considering filing a claim for Disability should call S&A. The attorneys here will be glad to discuss it with you and answer any questions you may have about the claim filing process. We offer free consultation. We work on a contingency fee basis. That means we only get paid a fee for our work when we are successful in getting benefits for our client.

The Social Security Disability claims process is difficult to understand and navigate. Few doctors understand the process. Often doctors will respond to us by stating, “My patient is completely disabled. Why are they not getting benefits?”. Disability must be proven to the standard set by the Social Security Administration. That’s why it is vital to have an attorney that is experienced and knowledgeable about Social Security Disability requirements. Kent Silver moved to Athens in 1984 to begin his work in private practice. Art Archibald began his practice in Athens in 1990. Michael Keene and Ben Walters became partners in the firm in 2017. Am I emotionally ready to retire? Submitted by Edward Jones Advisors

W

hen it comes to the right retirement age, there is no right answer. The traditional retirement age of 65 may not be feasible – or desirable – for you. But what really matters is if you are financially and emotionally ready to stop working. We think it’s important to invest some time now to prepare for this change, so we recommend involving your spouse and other family members in the conversation. Openly discussing your vision can help ensure a successful adjustment to your new life. And even though there’s a lot to think about, your Edward Jones financial advisor can help you better prepare for the financial impact of not working full time – whenever that may be.

Explore these five important questions Thinking about your answers to the following questions can help bring your vision to life:

What does the word “retirement” mean to you? The idea of a traditional retirement doesn’t fit many of our ideal notions anymore of how we may want to spend our future. You may want to travel, volunteer or spend more time with your family. You could also be ready to spend more time enjoying a hobby or even start a new career. Having a plan of what will make you happy during the next phase of life can help you start to envision what your days may look like.

How will leaving the workforce make you feel? You’ve probably worked most of your adult life. Making the switch can be a big adjustment. It’s normal to be excited yet have some doubts. You don’t have somewhere to go every day. Are you OK with that? Do you have other things you want to do? Money is only part

of the picture. Make sure you’ve thought through how you actually feel about retiring.

What’s the first thing you want to do when you retire? Write down the first three, five or 10 things you want to do – and don’t expect to achieve them all in the first week. Remember, you’ll have plenty of years to fill with the things you want to do.

If you have a spouse or partner, is he or she on board? Does your spouse or partner want to retire when you do? If so, what’s your health insurance situation? Is working part time or volunteering an option or desire for you? If you want to travel, does your partner? Talk to your partner about his or her ideas about retirement. If you have different visions, discuss them and find some common ground. By talking now, you can work together to make the best of retirement for both of you.

If you have children, how do they feel? Talk to your children about their – and your – expectations. For example, do they expect you to offer child care or other favors after you are no longer working full time? If necessary, decide on ground rules and boundaries ahead of time. This can help prevent uncomfortable conversations down the road. It’s OK to be a little concerned about making the right choices about retirement – these are big decisions. Working with your financial advisor can help address some of these worries and make you feel more confident about your path forward.

How we can help By understanding your retirement vision, we can help you develop a financial strategy to help make it a reality.

Why Can’t I Get a Good Night’s Sleep? RLS, feel like there is tingling, crawling, or pins and needles in one or both legs. This feeling is worse at night. See your doctor for more information about medicines to treat RLS.

SLEEP APNEA People with sleep apnea have short pauses in breathing while they are asleep. These pauses may happen many times during the night. If not treated, sleep apnea can lead to other problems, such as high blood pressure, stroke, or memory loss. You can have sleep apnea and not even know it. Feeling sleepy during the day and being told you are snoring loudly at night could be signs that you have sleep apnea.

DEEPAK DAS, M.D.

If you think you have sleep apnea, see a doctor who can treat this sleep problem. You may need to learn to sleep in a position that keeps your airways open. Treatment using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device almost always helps people with sleep apnea. A dental device or surgery may also help.

MOVEMENT DISORDERS AND SLEEP Restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder are common in older adults. These movement disorders can rob you of needed sleep. People with restless legs syndrome, or

Periodic limb movement disorder, or PLMD, causes people to jerk and kick their legs every 20 to 40 seconds during sleep. Medication, warm baths, exercise, and relaxation exercises can help.

Rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep behavior disorder is another condition that may make it harder to get a good night’s sleep. During normal REM sleep, your muscles cannot move, so your body stays still. But, if you have REM sleep behavior disorder, your muscles can move and your sleep is disrupted. If you are having trouble sleeping, Athena Sleep Medicine can help. Dr. Deepak Das specializes in helping people get the great comfort of a good night’s sleep! Benefits of Tea? B

ecause of high levels of antioxidants, tea has been linked to a lower risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Researchers have found that regular tea consumption could more than halve the risk of cognitive decline for older adults, particularly for those with a genetic risk of Alzheimer’s disease. In 2015, more than 3.6 billion gallons of tea were consumed in the U.S., with black tea being the favorite. The possible health benefits of tea consumption have been well documented. A recent study published in The American Journal of Public Health, attributed moderate tea intake with the following… • Reduction in cardiovascular events. • Brain benefits, with one study linking green tea consumption to better working memory. Compared with adults who rarely drank tea, those who consumed tea regularly were found to have a 50 percent lower risk of cognitive decline. The researchers note that the cognitive benefits were seen with consumption of tea that was brewed from tea leaves, such as green tea, black tea, and oolong tea. Tea has many beneficial compounds, such as theaflavins, catechins, thearubigins, and L-theanine. These compounds have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential What a nice time to have a lovely cup of tea!

massage CAN BE A GREAT

therapy

WHAT IS GERIATRIC MASSAGE? Geriatric massage involves using the hands to gently rub the soft tissues to improve blood circulation, relieve pain, and increase range of motion, but it employs specialized techniques designed for aging skin and muscles. Characteristics of geriatric massage include the following: • Prior to the treatment, the massage therapist should consult with the client’s healthcare team to become aware of any problems that may be encountered during the massage. • The massage therapist needs flexibility in positioning aging clients. Some clients may not be able to get on or off a massage table easily, and options might need to be explored. • Body placement is important. For example, someone with respiratory problems should not be placed in a prone position, and the back should be worked with the person in a sitting position or lying on his/ her side. • Long, stripping strokes should be avoided, because skin thins with age. A technique called fluffing, which combines rhythmic stroking and gently lifting and squeezing the skin, may be more appropriate. • In most cases, stretching techniques should not be used. • While the focus is on gentle motions, on occasion stronger movements may be needed—for example, to improve flexibility of the shoulders. • Sessions should be short—usually no more than 30 minutes. BENEFITS OF GERIATRIC MASSAGE Older people are prone to developing age-related diseases that limit their physical capabilities and cause poor circulation. Geriatric massage can help some people regain certain physical functions and mobility. Additionally, many seniors are lonely, anxious, or depressed, and geriatric massage can provide comfort to touch-deprived elderly clients and

improve their quality of life. Other benefits of geriatric massage include: • Speeding recovery from injury or illness

• Enhancing the length and quality of sleep

• Easing anxiety and improving sensorimotor functions after a stroke

• Reducing the physical signs of agitation (e.g., pacing, wandering, resisting) in Alzheimer’s sufferers • Improving lymphatic flow, which increases the excretion of toxic substances from the body There is also some evidence that geriatric massage can have an effect on memory. Repetitive touch can help the elderly—particularly those with Alzheimer’s disease—to retain some body memory, and that in turn can trigger the recall of other memories. CAUTIONS In general, geriatric massage is considered safe for most seniors; however, there are some cautions to be aware of. • Calf pain with heat can be a sign of phlebitis and should not be massaged. • If a client has a blood clot or an aneurism, a doctor’s permission must be obtained before that client can receive a massage. • Do not perform deep tissue massage on elderly people, because their skin is thinner and can tear more easily. • Do not massage: open sores, skin ulcers, or burn wounds, eczema or undiagnosed rashes, the site of an injury or surgery • sore, enlarged lymph nodes • Every client is different, and it is important to evaluate each one individually to determine if geriatric massage is an appropriate addition to the care program.

For Your

Brain Health

s we age, a number of brain changes occur, including a decrease in brain tissue, a reduction in blood flow, and a decline in communication between brain cells. All of these changes can interfere with cognitive functioning, especially learning and memory. Previous studies have suggested that physical activity in later life can help to reduce cognitive decline. DANCING AND THE HIPPOCAMPUS One research study included 52 healthy adults aged 63-80 years in two random groups. One group was required to participate in a 90-minute weekly dancing lesson, while the other group did 90 minutes of strength-endurance training. The dance group faced new routines every week, the activities of the strength-endurance training group were repetitive. The seniors in the dance group had constantly changing dance routines (Jazz, Square, LatinAmerican and Line Dance). The researchers found that both groups demonstrated an increase in hippocampal volume, but dancers showed the greatest increase. The hippocampus is the brain region associated with learning, memory, and emotion, and it is the region commonly affected by age-related brain changes. Only dancers showed an increase in neuronal connections in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, associated with memory formation.

The role of hearing in developing speech, language and academic skills is well recognized. Even a mild hearing loss can affect a child’s ability to develop language skills and can interfere with learning at all grade levels. Fortunately, tremendous progress has been made in early identification of hearing loss. According to a report from the Deafness Research Foundation and the World Council on Hearing Health, nearly nine out of 10 babies get hearing tests at birth. Each year, more than 12,000 infants in the United States -- one in 300 -- are born with a hearing impairment. Of these, 4,000 are profoundly deaf. In fact, hearing loss is the number one birth defect in the United States.

Hearing Loss At Work Hearing loss in the workplace makes it more difficult to participate at meetings, to talk with clients on the telephone or to understand what fellow workers are saying. A nurse has to hear what the patient is saying and a waiter has to hear the food order. Problems at work, lost or reduced productivity, and even missed promotions are additional costs of hearing loss. Undetected hearing loss can cause the greatest problems. The person may confuse names, numbers and dates. The undetected hearing loss can make someone

22

look confused, uncooperative or stupid. (‘How could you possibly have thought the meeting was on the 16th? Everyone else heard me say it was on the 15th. Why don’t you pay attention?)

Hearing Loss At Home Hearing loss can cause a great deal of stress and friction among family members, especially when the hearing loss is undetected or untreated. How often has a family member said, “You only hear me when you want to’ or “Why don’t you pay attention to what I say anymore?” How many people complain that their husband or wife turns the television up too loud—and the spouse insists that it’s not? How many children finally decide it’s just too difficult to communicate with Mom and Dad and a family relationship begins to deteriorate? The stress and frustration caused by hearing loss can lead to isolation and divorce. According to a large study by the National Council on Aging, someone with untreated hearing loss is more likely to be socially isolated, feel anxious and feel depressed than someone with hearing loss who has gotten help.

The Good News The good news is that a great deal of help is available today. Tests to determine hearing loss are very advanced and hearing aids have

SERVING OUR COUNTRY... LIVING BEYOND

S BY KELLY HOLLOWAY Epps, Holloway, DeLoach & Hoipkemier, LLC

o many of our beloved veterans are overwhelmed by the Veteran’s Administration processes. There are funds and programs available, but it is daunting to think about actually applying for them. In our last edition, we featured information on Veteran’s Aid & Attendance Pension. Interestingly, a U.S. Army war combat veteran of Vietnam saw this article and decided to do something about his situation. For over 40 years, he had been receiving $130 a month disability. He could not work and depended on others to help him make it through. He was afraid if he asked for more, the V.A. would take away what he was currently getting! He was happy he responded to the article, because now he is receiving over $1,400 a month when he gained custody of his daughter.

Too many of our veterans, who so bravely served our country are this same type of situation. Some are unaware these funds are available. If you are a veteran or a spouse, ask these questions…

VETERAN BENEFITS

24

1. SERVICE REQUIREMENTS: A veteran must have served at least 90 days on active duty, served at least 1 day during wartime (combat not required) and received an honorable discharge. 2. DISABILITY REQUIREMENTS: You have a disability 1) requiring assistance with daily living, 2) a physical or mental need to live in a protected environment (a facility or caregiver), 3) are legally blind, OR 4) reside in a nursing home. 3. LIMITED MEANS REQUIREMENT: The VA has a cap on income and net worth to determine eligibility for pension benefits. However, income is reduced by allowable expenses such as home care or assisted living. Each situation is different and depends on the individual facts and circumstances. With strategic planning, even those whose net worth or income exceeds the allowable limits can qualify for benefits.

ANSWERING THE CALL TODAY FOR BETTER CANCER CARE TOMORROW UCBC ADAPTS SERVICES & HOSTS COVID-19 VACCINATION CLINICS BY UNIVERSITY CANCER & BLOOD CENTER STAFF

A

t University Cancer & Blood Center, the safety of our patients and staff is and has always been the top priority. Cancer doesn’t stop, and so neither can cancer care. As COVID-19 and its effects spread throughout Northeast Georgia back in March 2020, UCBC quickly realized that it was our duty to protect our patients and adapt our cancer care services with that top of mind. To address the challenge of reducing risk of exposure while maintaining uninterrupted treatment plans, we proactively implemented new procedures and services to ensure safe, quality care. And now, a year later, as we wrap up months of community vaccination clinics, pivoting to better serve our community and keeping everyone safe, is our ‘new normal.’

TELEHEALTH & EARLY SCREENING In March 2020, UCBC implemented stringent and thorough screening processes for patients and employees entering our facilities. Additionally, in an effort to minimize contact, UCBC went virtual with Telehealth visits to continue care while reducing the volume of patients in our building. These virtual appointments allow our immunocompromised patients to remain home but still receive test results and treatment planning. Worries can skyrocket during this time and anxiety symptoms multiply. Our clinical oncology social work team and Live Well team have been hard at work over the last year to make counseling sessions available through the Telehealth platform (the same ones our physicians are using) so that patients can continue to receive the same support they need in the safety and comfort of their own home. UCBC social workers are also able to offer risk assessment counseling and genetic testing programs via Telehealth as well.

CURBSIDE LAB SERVICES In April 2020, UCBC implemented a curbside lab service system for patients at our Athens location. Our phlebotomists greeted patients in designated parking spots and collected lab work by drawing blood as usual. Curbside lab services included pre-visit lab work, labs that are needed for a Telehealth appointment, and lab rechecks. This service minimizes the number of people in and out of the UCBC facilities and ensures that patients are receiving care and progressing through their treatment without delay.

26

ON LIVING WELL, HEALTHY & HAPPY!

UCBC’S ACUTE CARE CLINIC While COVID-19 created the need for new versions of care, UCBC is constantly working to create new permanent services that will benefit our patients for years to come. In an effort to continue providing patients with holistic cancer care and prevent patients from racking up hefty bills from emergency room visits, UCBC opened the Acute Care Clinic at our Athens location (Building 700) to treat patients experiencing adverse side effects of cancer treatment. Since those with cancer are more vulnerable to COVID-19, we believe the re-opening of the Acute Care Clinic in April 2020 has given our patients peace of mind and support during an already stressful period in their journey.

COVID-19 VACCINATION CLINICS As December 2020 approached, UCBC knew that a COVID-19 vaccine was soon becoming available after a year-long pandemic. And we felt that it was our responsibility to the community to use our resources for good. Starting in February 2021, UCBC began hosting, organizing, and facilitating weekly vaccination clinics at our Athens location and eventually branched out to locations like Extra Special People, Bethel Baptist Church, Oconee County Civic Center, local fire stations, and our Eatonton location. As of May 2021, UCBC has distributed over 10,000 vaccines and been fortunate enough to have had the help of more than 400 community helpers for a total of 5,000 volunteer hours to make these clinics possible. UCBC’s dedication to providing quality, compassionate care is steadfast, and as the world moves towards restoration and hope, we will continue to adapt and prioritize those we serve above all else. University Cancer & Blood Center is one of the leading cancer centers in the Southeast, with the highest standards of care in treatments; exceptional, compassionate cancer and blood therapies; and the most promising clinical trials. The physicians and staff of UCBC are committed to the best possible outcome for every patient at our eight locations throughout northeast Georgia. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN

ESTATE PLANNING FOR RETIREMENT ASSETS The SECURE Act changes the way individual retirement accounts are handled at death. Elinore R. Young Attorney Fortson, Bentley and Griffin, P.A.

In 2019, Congress passed the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE Act). This legislation changed certain rules governing IRAs, including a significant change regarding inherited IRAs. It is important to understand how these accounts will be handled at death, as many Americans incorporate IRAs as part of their financial plan.

What’s New? Wade A. Schueneman Attorney Fortson, Bentley and Griffin, P.A.

Lindsey B. Woodard Attorney Fortson, Bentley and Griffin, P.A.

28

The SECURE Act raised the age for required minimum distributions from age 70½ to age 72, and eliminated the age limit for contributions to IRAs (provided the retirement plan participant has earned income). It also eliminated “stretch” distributions from IRAs with limited exceptions. In the past, a beneficiary could take mandatory distributions from an inherited IRA based on his or her own life expectancy, allowing more time for the IRA’s assets to grow on a pretax basis. Now, beneficiaries must withdraw assets from an inherited IRA within ten years of the owner’s death. The amount can be withdrawn gradually over that period, but funds must not remain in the account after ten years have expired. This

ON LIVING WELL, HEALTHY & HAPPY!

shortened tax deferral period means IRA beneficiaries will likely be required to pay more income taxes at higher rates than they would have prior to the SECURE Act.

Special Treatment of Trusts If a retirement plan participant does not want to leave benefits to a beneficiary outright, the participant must designate a trust as the beneficiary. Trusts are sometimes used to protect inherited assets from creditors in the event of a beneficiary’s divorce or bankruptcy, for example. There are special rules for trusts as beneficiaries, and any individuals who previously named a trust as a beneficiary of their IRAs should consider having the trust reviewed in light of the changes. In the past, many advisors recommended “conduit trusts” as they allowed stretch distributions to a beneficiary over the beneficiary’s lifetime. With the new ten-year rule, such trusts may not accomplish the intended result. Unintended consequences include windfalls to the beneficiary and reduced asset protection. It is always important to review estate plans in light of new legislation, and that is especially true when the legislation affects a popular financial vehicle like IRAs. The SECURE Act has left many reevaluating plans to avoid unintended tax liability and achieve their desired objective. Since each plan is unique, it is best to discuss your particular situation and goals with an advisor.

Mediterranean BENEFITS OF THE

C

an the Mediterranean Diet help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease or slow or slow agerelated cognitive decline? Researchers are beginning to think so.

The Mediterranean diet incorporates a high intake of plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts, and limits red meat while replacing butter with healthy fats, such as olive oil. The diet encourages eating fish or poultry at least twice a week and using herbs and spices rather than salt to flavor food.

Diet…

The Mediterranean Diet has been touted as the best eating plan to lower the risk of heart disease and reduce levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) - or “bad” - cholesterol. And, studies show that with adding more nuts or olive oil it may protect against cognitive decline in seniors. Overall, the studies and research reveals that people with greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet have less cognitive decline, experience improvements in cognitive function, and/or are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, compared with those who had lower adherence to the diet. In relation to memory, participants who closely followed the Mediterranean diet experienced improvements in • long-term and working memory, as well as improvements in • delayed recognition • executive memory • visual constructs • attention and language Overall, the researchers say their review suggests there is “encouraging evidence” that following a Mediterranean diet can improve cognitive function and even older adults should switch to The Mediterranean Diet.

hen facing surgery or a major medical event, such as a heart attack, stroke or hip replacement, choosing the right location to recover is an important part of the healing process. Morgan Medical Center’s transitional care program offers high-quality inpatient care for those recovering from a variety of major surgeries or medical issues. Also known as our “swing bed” program, our transitional care team helps patients regain their strength and prepare to move home for continued recovery. Our team of physicians, therapists, dietitians and case managers works closely with each patient’s referring doctor to ensure we deliver the appropriate specialized care needed for re-

covery. Our goal is to help our patients transition home as soon as they are able, so we cater our therapy routines to individual abilities to help speed the recovery period. Our team provides physical, occupational, speech, and/ or recreational therapy twice daily for up to three hours each day.

Modern, Comfortable Recovery Spaces MMC’s newly built facility offers patients a more comfortable, home-like environment for rehabilitation. Private rooms and bathrooms are equipped with smart bed technology, which includes bed alarms and other safety features, to reduce risks of falls and other injuries. Movement is an important element of the healing process. Our therapy spaces are designed to help patients practice a variety of upperand lower-body movements. Our indoor therapy gym features new equipment to work multiple muscle groups. A specially designed outdoor therapy garden provides a functional space to practice walking, movement and balance. Because mental and emotional health are crucial to the healing process, our certified recreational therapist coordinates daily activities and social interactions to maintain engagement. Patients enjoy games, art projects, outdoor activities, hair and nail services and visits from therapy dogs. For those who can’t receive regular visitors due to COVID-19 or other reasons, we ensure patients stay con-

nected to family members through social media, email and video calls. Patients in Morgan’s transitional care program also benefit from roundthe-clock access to an on-site physician, as well as the hospital’s emergency care, diagnostic department and in-house pharmacy.

Receiving Care at MMC Individuals throughout Georgia choose MMC for transitional care. For Sandi Bell, local access to personalized care gave her comfort and confidence during her mother’s recovery at Morgan. “I was most impressed with MMC’s swing bed program from the moment of admission to discharge and everything in between. We had the very best in nursing care along with knowledgeable therapists, doctors and encouraging rehabilitation sessions. I felt support from all directions. It was wonderful to receive first-class care so close to home,” she said. Patients must have a referral to be admitted to the swing bed program. Most patients stay in Morgan’s shortterm rehabilitation facility for 14-21 days until they are ready to move home or to a long-term care facility. If you or a loved one needs transitional care, ask to receive care at Morgan Medical Center. To make a referral, patient information may be faxed to 706-342-4359. For questions regarding the program, contact the Case Management department manager, Shannon Lovell, at 706-752-2271. Learn more about Morgan Medical Center at morganmedical.org.

What Is

Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer's and dementia basics • Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, or memory loss serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 percent to 80 percent of dementia cases. • Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. But Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of old age. Approximately 200,000 Americans under the age of 65 have younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease (also known as early-onset Alzheimer’s). • Alzheimer’s worsens over time. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

36

• Alzheimer’s has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Although current Alzheimer’s treatments cannot stop Alzheimer’s from progressing, they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

HELP IS AVAILABLE The Alzheimer’s Association is the trusted resource for reliable information, education, referral and support to millions of people affected by the disease. • Call the 24/7 Helpline: 800.272.3900 • Locate your local Alzheimer’s Association

SYMPTOMS OF ALZHEIMER’S Most of us eventually notice some slowed thinking and occasional problems with remembering certain things. However, serious memory loss, confusion and other major changes in the way our minds work may be a sign that brain cells are failing.

ON LIVING WELL, HEALTHY & HAPPY!

The most common early symptom of Alzheimer’s is difficulty remembering newly learned information because Alzheimer’s changes typically begin in the part of the brain that affects learning. As Alzheimer’s advances through the brain it leads to increasingly severe symptoms, including disorientation, mood and behavior changes; deepening confusion about events, time and place; unfounded suspicions about family, friends and professional caregivers; more serious memory loss and behavior changes; and difficulty speaking, swallowing and walking.

ALZHEIMER’S IS NOT THE ONLY CAUSE OF MEMORY LOSS Many people have trouble with memory — this does NOT mean they have Alzheimer’s. There are many different causes of memory loss. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of dementia, it is best to visit a doctor so the cause can be determined.

BEST TYPES OF EXERCISE FOR OLDER ADULTS

1. SWIMMING Getting in the pool is a great way to increase your cardiovascular fitness while also strengthening your muscles. It does all this while putting minimal stress on your bones and joints, which is a major plus for men and women who have arthritis or osteoporosis. 2. YOGA Yoga helps build muscle strength, aerobic fitness, balance, core stability, mobility, and flexibility—all of which are important for older adults. And while yoga is low-impact and gentle on your body’s joints, it’s still weight-bearing, meaning that you have to support your body’s weight with every posture. 3. PILATES Like yoga, Pilates is known for being a low-impact strength program, but its focus on core strength and stability makes it especially great for older adults. Pilates participation improves balance in older adults. 4. BODYWEIGHT TRAINING One out of every three older adults experiences severe muscle loss. Research shows that strength training is more timeefficient compared to cardiovascular exercise. For most older adults, it’s far safer to start small with simple bodyweight exercises such as chair squats, single-leg stands, wall pushups, and stair climbing. 5. RESISTANCE-BAND TRAINING Bands can help you challenge your muscles in ways you might not be able to with equipment-free training. When it comes to strengthening your back, rows and other

pulling motions are vital—but hard to do if you don’t have any exercise equipment on hand. 6. WALKING Research found that people who increased their activity levels to 10,000 steps per day were 46 percent less likely to die in the following 10 years. For some older adults, 10,000 may not be the right exact number, but walking is still a great, workout that can have a big impact on your health. 7. CYCLING Another low-impact form of exercise, cycling, is ideal for those who want to increase their leg strength. Cycling also helps improve cardiovascular health, metabolic health, function, and cognitive performance in adults older than 70. 8. STRENGTH AND AEROBIC CLASSES Group exercise is great for not only cardiovascular, but also for having fun and making new friends. The social aspect of group exercise programs increases activity levels in older adults over the long term. 9. PERSONAL TRAINING Working with a personal trainer is a great path to fitness. Use one-on-one sessions to help you get started with a program you can continue on your own or with a group. When choosing a trainer, make sure he or she is certified through a governing body like the American College of Sports Medicine, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, or the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

How Do You Know

Contributed by

When It Is Time for Assisted Living

I

t is so difficult to determine when a loved one should move from being independent at home, to living in assisted living. Some seniors are in great health and have fine cognitive ability. They are able to stay in their home and live independent, productive lives.

Then there are those seniors who have severe health issues, poor memory and need constant care. You may have noticed a decline in their sociability and more frequent forgetfulness. Perhaps you are more and more concerned about their safety from falling, or accidents. Here are a few of the signs… • Frequent accidents—Your loved one may often fall or get into traffic accidents and may no longer be able to live at home. • Poor Financial Management—If bills are going unpaid or money isn’t being managed properly, it could be another sign. • Failing Memory— Your loved one may need assisted living, or memory care, handled by highly trained nurses and professionals who can handle the needs of seniors with severe cognitive decline. • Forgetfulness—In addition to everyday forgetfulness, there are serious concerns over forgetting to turn the burner off the stove or oven. Some seniors forget where they are going, whether they are driving a car or simply taking a walk and become lost. •

Lack of Attention To Daily Needs—Have you noticed your loved one is no longer taking care of the home? Is it dirty? Are they taking care of their own personal hygiene? Are they remembering to take their medications? •

Susceptibility to scammers and con artists?

If any of these issues is of concern to you, perhaps it is time to consider finding an assisted living community for your loved one. There are plenty of wonderful assisted living or memory care facilities available. More now than ever before! Whatever your loved one needs. Although it can be quite scary at first, most seniors get used to it quickly and rave over what a wonderful decision has been made—free housekeeping, gourmet meals, a beautiful facility that feels like home, activities and socialization (new friends), medication reminders and so much more! It can be a “new lease on life”.

LIVING UP TO OUR PROMISE Since day one, Wesley Woods of Athens has been committed to giving active, retired seniors a safe and comfortable community they are happy to call home and where they can continue to grow their passions and potential. While we could tell you in our own words why it can be a safe and positive choice to join us during these pandemic-driven times, we think the words of our residents do an even better job.

Consider What We Aren’t

Consider The Alternative

It is true that assisted living communities are vulnerable to COVID-19 outbreaks. However, I live in a retirement community, and there is no other place I would rather be right now. I experience, daily, the care, concern and love of our staff. We have everything we need, and our community has safety precautions that inspire confidence and peace of mind.

Coronavirus was just beginning to top the news when I moved into Wesley Woods of Athens. But I didn’t think twice about changing my mind. I was all about forging ahead. My children and I had done our research and had chosen Talmadge Terrace for all the good reasons you might imagine – location, amenities, excellent reputation.

Meals are delivered to my apartment. Surprises—books, puzzles, games—magically appear on my doorstep. I spend my days in the community garden, making masks for staff and residents and visiting with friends on the patio (from a safe distance). - Carolyn Roper, Resident - Wesley Woods

I thought, why stay alone and isolated in a too-large house when I could feel just as safe without feeling lonely? And I was right. I have made some great new friends. There are always people around. And the precautions are clear, organized and easy to follow. I think we are in for a long-haul with this pandemic. I feel fortunate to be in the perfect place to ride it out. Betty Argo, Resident - Wesley Woods

Remember the promise we mentioned at the beginning of this article? We have not wavered one iota from that promise during the ups and downs of the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, we understand fully that deciding to move ahead with retirement plans and join an independent living community at this time is a BIG decision for seniors and their families. It can also be the BEST decision. WESLEY WOODS OF ATHENS Talmage Terrace | Lanier Gardens 801 Riverhill Drive | Athens, GA 30606 | 706.369.7100 | wesleywoods.org/athens

WELCOME TO THE GIFT OF ASSURANCE

“Words cannot express the appreciation we have for the staff for keeping our mother safe and well. We have been very impressed with how Wesley Woods has managed her care and are forever grateful.”

TALMAGE TERRACE | LANIER GARDENS

801 Riverhill Drive | Athens, GA 30606 706.369.7100 | wesleywoods.org/athens

Actually, those words express beautifully the confidence and peace of mind families have when their loved ones are part of our family – especially in these trying times. And they describe just one more reason – along with the great amenities and conveniences we offer – why people are so happy to hear us say,

WELCOME HOME. Wesley Woods of Athens is centrally located— within walking distance of all the necessities— shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Laughing... It’s Good for Your Health

Keep

T

oday we Live longer and better lives with earlier detection and treatment of diseases. But you can steer the ship when it comes to staying well, healthy and happy. You know the drill… we hear it almost every day of our lives-Follow these rules for longevity and well-being ... • Healthy lifestyle • Disease prevention • Immunizations • Self-care • Injury prevention

If you haven’t done so already, you can take control of your health and happiness by addressing these areas: Smoking: Quitting your smoking habit is the best thing you can do for your health, no matter how old you are or how many years you’ve smoked. Research shows that when an older person quits smoking, circulation improves immediately, and the lungs begin to repair damage. Nutrition: Eating well and healthy means plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fiber in your diet Try to eliminate saturated fat, trans fat and lower cholesterol by reading nutrition labels. Keep your intake of sugar and sodium low.

Alcohol Consumption: If you’re over 65, limit your alcoholic drinks to one per day. Exercise: Start small, don’t overdo, then stop. Thirty minutes of activity every day can do wonders!. Walking is one of the most inexpensive and easiest ways to fit regular exercise into your routine. Join a local mall walkers group, make a regular meeting with a friend to walk after work, join up with friends, start your own group-or, just use the time exercising to meditate, or have peaceful time alone. Talk to your doctor about other ways to fit activity into your day based on your physicalabilities. Prevention: Regular testing and immunizations are crucial to the prevention and early detection and treatment of health problems. When you have regular appointments with your doctor and dentist, take a list of your medicines-including prescriptions, vitamins, herbs and overthe-counter medications-to your doctor to ensure you are not risking any negative interactions. Injuries: Be sure you have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home and check for fire hazards, such as overloaded circuits, piles of clothes and flammable liquids. Keep your home well lit and free of things that could make you fall. Research shows that healthy, older people who exercise are less likely to fall. Check with your doctor for exercises to improve your balance. Hydration: Drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Build it into your schedule! It cleanses the body, oxygenates the cells and improves overall energy. Breathing: Practice deep breathing techniques every day as best you can. It keeps the metabolism moving and just gives you a better overall feeling of good health. Socialization: And remember: A good laugh, smile or hug will do wonders for your health, your looks and your state of mind. Keep in contact with your friends and family. Get to know your neighbors. Get involved in a group by joining a club or volunteering your time at a hospital, place of worship or other organization. Remember: “Good friends are good for your health.”

PALLIATIVE CARE What is Palliative Care? Palliative Care is specialized care for those with an acute or chronic illness and has a focus on symptom management as well as stress relief. Unlike Hospice patients, these patients may have palliative care at any stage of their illness and receive curative therapy at the same time. The goal is to reduce patient’s suffering, provide on-going treatment and promote the best quality of life for those with serious illnesses. Benefits of Palliative Care When patients and their families are faced with potentially life limiting illness, things can become extremely overwhelming very quickly. Our team works to optimize patient care and promote the highest quality of life for patients and their families. PruittHealth Hospice Care can help. Management of Difficult Symptoms The palliative team provides the most comprehensive care and management of the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs to the patient. Symptoms may include pain, dyspnea, anxiety/ agitiation, loss of appetite, depression and more.

Palliative Care provides patients with a serious illness a higher quality of life and comfort. MEDITATION A SIMPLE, FAST WAY TO REDUCE STRESS

I

f stress has you anxious, tense and worried, consider trying meditation. Spending even a few minutes in meditation can restore your calm and inner peace. Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional wellbeing and your overall health.

MEDITATION AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING When you meditate, you may clear away the information overload that builds up every day and contributes to your stress. The emotional benefits of meditation can include: • Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations • Building skills to manage your stress • Increasing self-awareness • Focusing on the present • Reducing negative emotions • Increasing imagination and creativity • Increasing patience and tolerance • Elements of meditation Different types of meditation may include different features to help you meditate. Focused attention. Focusing your attention is generally one of the most important elements of meditation. Focusing your attention is what helps free your mind from the many distractions that cause stress and worry.

• Open attitude. Let thoughts pass through your mind without judgment. EVERYDAY WAYS TO PRACTICE MEDITATION Here are some ways you can practice meditation on your own, whenever you choose: • Breathe deeply. This technique is good for beginners because breathing is a natural function. Focus all your attention on your breathing. • Scan your body. Focus attention on different parts of your body. Become aware of your body’s various sensations, whether that’s pain, tension, warmth or relaxation. • Repeat a mantra. You can create your own mantra, whether it’s religious or secular. • Walk and meditate. Combining a walk with meditation is an efficient and healthy way to relax. • Engage in prayer. Prayer is the best known and most widely practiced example of meditation. • Read and reflect. Many people report that they benefit from reading poems or sacred texts, and taking a few moments to quietly reflect on their meaning.

• Relaxed breathing. This technique involves deep, even-paced breathing using the diaphragm muscle to expand your lungs. .

• Focus your love and gratitude. In this type of meditation, you focus your attention on a sacred image or being, weaving feelings of love, compassion and gratitude into your thoughts.

• A quiet setting. If you’re a beginner, practicing meditation may be easier if you’re in a quiet spot with few distractions, including no television, radios or cellphones.

• Building your meditation skills Don’t judge your meditation skills, which may only increase your stress. Meditation takes practice.

• A comfortable position. You can practice meditation whether you’re sitting, lying down, walking, or in other positions or activities.

Keep in mind, for instance, that it’s common for your mind to wander during meditation, no matter how long you’ve been practicing meditation.
