About Clay County

Origins of Clay County At the Indiana legislative of 1825, nine years after the admission of the state to the union, Clay County was organized from sections of surrounding counties and named for Kentucky statesman, Henry Clay. The county’s earliest settlement, Bowling Green, preceded its formation by almost a decade. David Thomas came to the area in 1818 and was followed soon after by Samuel Rizley. The majority of Clay County’s settlement activity centered along the Eel River, which flows through the central part of the county. It was near this river that the community of Bowling Green was established. Bowling Green was named the county seat following Clay County’s organization since it was the only community in the county founded before 1830. The tale of the courthouses Built in the newly platted town of Bowling Green, the first county courthouse was constructed in 1828 soon after the Indiana legislature formed Clay County. The county quickly outgrew the two-story structure of hand-hewn logs and built a new two-story brick building at the same location. However, a fire on November 30, 1851, destroyed the building and all the records as well as ignited a public debate over selecting a new location for the county seat. Although some citizens believed Bowling Green was no longer the most practical or logical site for a new courthouse, the commissioners quickly decided to build the third courthouse on the site of the previous one. Built of brick, at the cost of $11,000, and very similar to the former courthouse, the new Courthouse began serving the county in the Fall of 1853. By the 1860s, the construction of the National Road (the old Cumberland Road and currently U.S. 40), as well as the addition of various railroads, the cities of Knightsville, Harmony, and Brazil, were fast becoming far more important and prosperous towns. Stronger and more organized efforts to

relocate the county seat to Brazil began in 1871, when brothers Robert and John Stewart donated a tract of land along the National Road in Brazil for the proposed site of the new courthouse. The sum of $5,300 was also raised by citizens in the area to entice the commissioners to move the seat of government from Bowling Green to Brazil. This amount was reportedly the value of the existing courthouse and grounds, thus defusing opponents’ argument that abandoning the present courthouse would be a waste of taxpayers’ money. The relocation efforts, which began in earnest in 1871, were ultimately challenged in the Supreme Court. The relocation was finally granted in 1876. The Clay County Courthouse, constructed in 1913-1914, is one of the most historically and architecturally significant buildings in Brazil and Clay County, Indiana. Built in Classical Revival style of architecture, it is the only building in Clay County holding county government offices and records. It is located alongside the famed National Road (Cumberland Trail). The present Courthouse is the fifth Courthouse to serve the people of Clay County, In 1986, a grassroots restoration effort was introduced by Clay Circuit Judge Ernest Yelton with a primary purpose to restore the beautiful stained glass dome to its original beauty. Embraced by the Clay Civic Memorial Foundation, a

Times File Photo fundraising project entitled “CODFISH” (Clay Officials Dedicated For Improving Stained Glass Heritage) was undertaken and successfully raised $30,000.00. The project was awarded to Kiser Glass of Indianapolis. During the restoration project, workmen discovered that wooden panels had been placed in circular openings in the four sides of the dome where clocks could be installed. Through the years, this knowledge was forgotten. A second fund-raiser was immediately initiated by Clay Civic Memorial Foundation, and the funds were raised quickly, all by Memorial gifts. Four lighted clocks were installed by the Omega Clock Company of Indianapolis at the cost of $18,500, electrified by Scott Electrical Services of Brazil, Indiana, and were in operation by November 26, 1986. Saving the Sabre The renovation project for the F-86F (52-5434) Sabre warplane memorial on the Courthouse lawn (above) is expected to start in 2020. The jet fighter-interceptor is one of only maybe a 100 planes still in existence and is on loan to the City of Brazil from the Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Brazil Main Street: Revitalizing community pride Bringing local art to the forefront of the community

Brazil Main Street is an all-volunteer non-profit organization located in Brazil, Indiana. Volunteers consist of individuals from all walks of life who want to make Brazil a better place to live. The goal is to promote and strengthen the downtown area of Brazil, as well as Clay County as a whole. The group plans and implements various community events, including Painting Blitz’s, Main Street Grills, Free Summer Movie Nights, and Downtown Beautification Projects, with the most significant event being the annual Route 40 Fest (below right) that takes place in downtown Brazil the third Saturday in September.

• Local artists were invited to decorate four flower box covers using the theme “Sunny Day-Branded Brazil.” The colorful entries are placed at the intersection of State Road 59 and U.S. 40 when the flower boxes are emptied after the growing season as a way to protect and cover them through the winter months. • The absence of Christmas lights in the Brazil downtown area in 2018 presented a challenge Brazil Main Street members who installed holiday flags in November, but also wanted to help light up the holidays. Members (lower left) started decorating poles at the intersection of State Road 59 and U.S. 40 with battery-operated lights with a built-in timer on a string of garland before a longterm solution can be determined. • In July 2019, the “Love Your City” photography contest was open to Clay County residents. All ages were invited to capture “examples of Brazil at its finest, share what speaks to your heart, show us why you love your city so that others in the community can see its beauty.”

• The Brazil Concert Band organized in 1858, is one of the nation’s longest continuing community bands in Indiana and one of the oldest in the United States. Earlier known as the Brazil Cornet Band, members played for the Lincoln-Douglas debates, and many members served together as musicians during the Civil War. The band exchanged the word “Cornet” for “Concert” by 1895. During inclement weather, the band plays in the Forest Park Pavilion, built for the growing community band in 1922. It still performs “Concerts Under the Stars” during the summer months in the open band shell, located in Forest Park in Brazil. • Forest Park is a hub of activities for the county. Local residents celebrate each Independence Day at the annual Brazil Rotary Club’s 4th of July Celebration, one of Indiana’s largest celebrations every year. The annual event provides free live

• Residents from throughout the Wabash Valley also enjoy the lighted decorations at the Christmas In The Park celebration in December at Forest Park. Enjoy the largest lighted Christmas Parade in Indiana the Friday evening after Thanksgiving, followed by a Gift of Christmas Fireworks show from Aerial Arts Fireworks, and features live entertainment, and lighted displays in the park and at hundreds of homes in Brazil and throughout Clay County. • The Clay County Historical Society Museum (National Register of Historic Places: U.S. Post Office-Brazil, Clay County Historical Museum, 100 East National Ave.) is home to many unique and local displays of history. This includes Brazil’s own Major Charles B. Hall of the Tuskegee Airmen; the gold medal winner in the 4x400 track event at the 1932 Olympic Games Ivan William Fuqua; American painter and Wabash Valley resident Denzil Omer “Salty” Seamon’s drawing of the Charfariz Dos Contos Fountain; and two native sons, Johnnie Gustave “Scat” Davis and Clarence “Snub” Maxwell, who found their way to Hollywood to name only a select few among the thousands of pieces available to view.

• Still in production after more than 100 years, the Clay City Pottery company is the state’s oldest working pottery. The Clay City Pottery Festival is an annual event that attracts thousands of people from all over the United States. At Pottery Festival time, the whole town is alive with activities. The activities are centered around the pottery, which is over 125 years old and still operated by the fourth generation of the founders of the pottery.

• The large apple orchards near Cory, which were started from seeds brought to the area by Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman, created the Cory Apple Festival (Above) in September to honor the event. The festival features free entertainment varying from a golf scramble to a Corn Hole Tournament, car and motorcycle shows, garden tractor pulls, the annual parade through town and live musical performances. And, all around town, you will find plenty of vendors with crafts, flea market items, antiques, yard sales and food booths to browse.

Annual Fishing Fun Day at Craig Park The annual Fishing Fun Day sponsored by the Brazil Board of Parks and Recreation at Craig Park is a great time to dip a line in the water in hopes of catching a fish! The event is free to all kids 16 and under and adults 66 and over, with free snacks and drinks. Anyone age 17-65 years old may fish with a valid Indiana Fishing License. Children 10 years old and under must be accompanied by an adult during the event that is held each September.

Clay County Parks CARBON PARK Clay County’s northernmost park, the Carbon Park is located next to the railroad tracks on the north side of Carbon. There is a shelter, basketball court and restroom facility. Carbon is home of the annual Van Buren Township Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry.

CENTER POINT PARK The Center Point Park is located two blocks south of the Methodist Church in Center Point. There are basketball goals and a playground. Restrooms are available. COALMONT PARK Clay County’s southern-

most park, the park is located in the heart of Coalmont. The park offers a shelter, basketball court and playgrounds. Restrooms are also located at the park. CRAIG PARK Located on North Waterworks Road in Brazil, Craig Park is equipped with two

fishing ponds, a playground, softball diamond, soccer field, and shelters. It is the home of the North Clay Middle School and Northview High School cross country teams. The track is also used as a walking and bicycle track for the public. • See PARKS, Page 23

It was recently completed and named after Wilmadean Baker, a member of the Clay County Parks Association. There is a restroom facility. Fishing is allowed at the park with a valid license. The park now offers camping, as well. HARMONY PARK The best kept secret in Clay County parks has a playground, walking track, tennis courts, tetherball pole and three softball fields. No dogs are allowed at the park. There are two shelters and restrooms are available. FOREST PARK Tucked away on the southern edge of Brazil just off of Forest Avenue, Forest Park includes a pool, golf course, basketball court, tennis courts, playground, walking track, baseball diamonds, softball diamond, band shell, pavilion, horseshoe pits, 18-basket disc golf course and 13 shelters. GOSHORN PARK Goshorn Park is located in Clay City. It is home of the Clay City 4-H Fair and the Pottery Festival. There are summer music concerts and a community building is available for gatherings.

POLAND PARK Located one block north of the main intersection in Poland, along the eastern border of Clay County, Poland Park has a shelter, basketball court, playground and restroom facility.

SKATE PARK Brazil’s skate park, located on West Jackson Street, near U.S. 40, is Brazil’s newest park. It features ramps and many other features for skateboard enthusiasts. STAUNTON PARK Staunton Park, also known as Optimist Park, is located in front of Staunton Elementary School. The park sets next to a girls’ softball diamond. The Clay County Genealogical Society, Inc. started the library with a small collection in the spare room of Helen Tarvin’s home. When the collection out-grew the room, the society started looking for a larger place. With the help of Ben Coffman, the present building was purchased, and the first meeting was held in it in November 1985. The library houses over 1,600 books including over 300 family histories, 6,000 surname files, historical newspapers on microfilm, files on towns, schools, businesses, and much more. While the emphasis is on Clay County materials, there is a considerable collection of materials that pertain to other Indiana counties as well as states from which Hoosiers have immigrated and emigrated. Preserving the Fountain of the Tales The ‘Crown Jewel of the City’ In 1948, the residents in Brazil extended an invitation to the Brazilian national president to visit. Unable to attend, he sent a diplomatic gesture of friendship and appreciation. The Chafariz dos Contos Fountain at the entrance to Forest Park was presented to the City of Brazil as a gift from His Excellency Eurico Gaspar Dutra in 1950, and officially dedicated at a community ceremony on May 26, 1956. Sculpted in granite by Tito Bernucci, the 104-piece fountain replicates one in Reinaldo Square Alves de Brito in Ouro Preto Minas Grerais in 1745. A restoration project of the Brazilian fountain was completed on June 14, 1997. To ensure the long-term preservation of this impressive landmark, the Brazil Parks Association hired Tri-C Plastering Inc. (of West Terre Haute) to redo the masonry work. YMCA of Clay County

• Celebrating 20 years on Kruzan Street The YMCA of Clay County is one of the most, if not the most, active non-profit, community service organizations in Clay County. It reaches hundreds of people each month. Located on Kruzan Street between State Road 59 and Lambert Street, it welcomes men, women and children of all ages, abilities, incomes, races and religions. Scholarships are available to many people. The Y is dedicated to strengthening the foundation of community by putting Christian principles into practice through programs that develop healthy spirit, mind and body. Members participate in such varied activities as basketball, soccer, 5K run/walk events, weight lifting, group fitness classes for all ages including the nationally recognized Silver Sneakers exercise program for seniors. Child care services are available for busy moms and dads. Local records suggest the YMCA of Brazil was formed in 1875, only 31 years after the YMCA had its original beginning in London. The Y in Brazil was probably one of the first in Indiana.
