Eat Fit in the City: Review

Since our launch in June 2015, Inspire Health Magazine has been a huge supporter of Eat Fit NOLA. You may have noticed the Ochsner Eat Fit seal, which is spreading rapidly on menus throughout the Metro New Orleans area. The program has determined specific guidelines for restaurants in an effort to create healthier dine-out options for families.

Here at Inspire Health, we share this vision. In addition to regularly promoting new Eat Fit restaurants, I am excited to try the Eat Fit restaurants in the Metro New Orleans area.

When my family voted for hamburgers for our family night out, I saw an opportunity to try out my Eat Fit app to find a healthy restaurant near us. Enough cannot be said for the Ochsner Eat Fit App, which made finding healthy options near me extremely easy. Another great thing about the app is that you can see the Eat Fit items right there on the app. No surprises, and you can see what the Eat Fit version should look like.

But my family was surprised when I suggested the Times Grill. That’s right! A restaurant famous for its hamburgers!

You might think the only Eat Fit options at a burger joint incorporate salad in some fashion. Honestly, I was expecting to drool enviously across the table throughout the meal while my carnivore husband and football playing son chowed down on big, juicy burgers. Much to my surprise (and delight), the Eat Fit menu at Times Grill did not have a single salad on it!

I ended up ordering the bunless turkey burger with slaw and sweet potato fries. I ordered the slaw on the side (which is why my picture varies from the app’s). The turkey burger was well-seasoned, and the sweet potato fries were light, crispy and hot! The server was well-informed and friendly. The best part is that I didn’t feel like I was eating a diet dish. I felt empowered by making a healthy, guilt-free choice. Eat Fit makes it easy to stay healthy and enjoy the foods you love.

My only advice after trying multiple restaurants is to 1) Ask specifically for the Eat Fit menu when trying a new restaurant and 2) Ask the server to remind the chef that you’re ordering from the Eat Fit menu. Originally, I planned to review 3 restaurants. Unfortunately, eating healthy doesn’t always go as planned. I had mix-ups at two of the three restaurants I tried because the back of the house wasn’t used to preparing the Eat Fresh version and a lack of communication between the server and the chef.

Things happen, so make sure you’re getting what you want. If you get a side of veggies slathered in butter, and it seems too good to be true – it probably is. Other than that, I highly recommend the Eat Fit app which will help guide you and your family to a healthy choice while dining out.
