Set realistic rules and boundaries. Contrary to what you might think, children want rules and boundaries. You could even say they crave them. They thrive in a world of black and white where it’s easy to determine right from wrong. As such, it’s just as easy for us to reward the desired behavior and punish the undesired. The hard part is consistency. As parents, it’s critical that we not only respond every time but also respond in the same way every time. So draw up your set of family rules and respond accordingly … every single time. Practice what you preach. Respect your children, respect your significant other and respect the man down the street who insists on parking his car a foot from the curb to protect his white wall tires. The best way to teach your children to respect is first to model it yourself. So be polite, be fair and, most of all, be a trustworthy resource for your child. When in doubt, follow the Golden Rule: Treat others as you want to be treated. Honesty is the best policy. No one ever said it was easy but, because trust is the cornerstone of respect, honesty is probably the most important point on this list. Teaching your children to step up when it’s difficult, is a personality and tell the truth, even trait that will serve them all the days of their lives. Nurture this courage by committing to a no-punishment policy when the truth is told. Or by doubling the punishment when it is not. From one parent to another, I urge you not give up on this one.
