The idea of the ErasmusPC salons is to have a few short presentations in order to organise inspiration. We invited a variety of people: scientists, civil cervants, inhabitants, architects and other stakeholders on these themes and their importance for the city. Each presentation will be followed by a discussion. We are very much looking forward to sharing all our experiences! City Pride Newtowns often struggle with their identity. The image of newtowns often is boring, sleepy, suburbian. How does city pride relate to the image and identity of the city? What makes people proud of their city? What kind of things / activities / people could enhance city pride? Does city pride enhance social cohesion and / or the way people participate in society? Who are / could be important ambassadors for city pride? How about your city? Are you proud of the city? And why (not…)?

Cultural elite A real city is a city where all social classes feel at home. Dutch newtowns / suburban areas, mainly consist of lower and mid dleclass population, e.g. families with children. Cultural elite is rare and the direct result is that it is harder to create a thriving cultural climate. Is this a typical Dutch phenomenon? What are your experiences? What is the importance of a cultural elite in the city? How does for instance having a university in a city effect city life?

Architecture & Planning Buildings affect people. So does the layout of a neighbourhood or city. How do you create a place where people love to be? A place they care about. Can architecture contribute to a posi tive image, identity, soul, pride? Do you have examples why buil dings / layout work or don’t work in your (or any other) city?
Soul of the City Collective memories. Places where something historically important happened. Vibrant citycentres or neighbourhoods, where people meet outside on terraces or in parks. Or inside in cafes, museums or restaurants. Those places are the heart and soul of cities. But what about newtowns that lack those collec tive memories or ‘natural’ places to meet. Is it possible to create a soulful atmosphere? What is the soul of your city?
