Message from the Minister Welcome to South Australia’s National Science Week 2018. The aim of National Science Week is to ignite our community’s passion for science and especially to inspire people of all ages to explore the fascinating world of science and technology, and to consider future career pathways in STEM areas. This year’s schools theme, Game Changers and Change Makers, acknowledges that the most influential developments in science and technology come about as the result of human ingenuity. Whether working independently or as part of a team, any person who dedicates themselves to the pursuit of discovery has the potential to make a breakthrough that will change the world. Knowledge, skills and qualifications in STEM disciplines are becoming increasingly important in a rapidly evolving world. Ensuring that South Australia’s young people are inspired to explore future careers in science and technology is crucial to our state’s economic success. Equally, providing diverse opportunities to South Australians to learn more about and be involved in science will lead to better-informed decision-making and richer lives. The Marshall Liberal South Australian Government recognises that a STEM skilled population and a re-energised focus on

innovation is essential for future, sustainable growth. We are creating an environment that enables our brightest minds to flourish across all scientific disciplines, including: space, defence, health, ICT, energy, agriculture and mining. South Australia is home to world-leading scientific minds, who are devising gamechanging innovations every day. National Science Week showcases their immense contributions to our everyday lives. There are hundreds of activities on offer across metropolitan and regional locations; so don’t miss the opportunity to jump in, experience something new and exciting, and be inspired to become a change-maker yourself.

In this event you will have the opportunity to play a number of games and engage in activities that will show you some interesting ways that science can help you understand politics, voting and political behaviour in general. This event is targeted to the general adult public or young adult public interested in politics and in understanding how science can play a role in the realm of politics. There is no prior knowledge necessary or assumed. Activities will be carried out individually and in small groups. Supported by a Big Science Adelaide grant

Science Week 2018 National Project

Get online to help the Great Barrier Reef this Science Week – and you could win a GoPro camera! The ABC’s citizen science project, Virtual Reef Diver, will celebrate the International Year of the Reef by inviting people to dive through their computer screens into the Great Barrier Reef. Anyone in Australia can help scientists identify areas of decreasing coral cover and other problem spots on the Reef. To be involved as a citizen scientist you just need to go to the Virtual Reef Diver website. You’ll be shown underwater images of the Reef and, using the simple classifying tool, asked to identify whether there is coral, algae or sand etc at different spots in the images. It’s simple and fun to do—and you get more competition entries the more images you complete! This work will provide scientists and reef managers with the information they need to make critical decisions to ensure the Great Barrier Reef has a future. The project has been developed by the Queensland University of Technology, in conjunction with a host of scientific and community organisations. The second phase of Virtual Reef Diver (coming later this year) will ask citizen scientists to upload their own underwater images of the Reef – so we can get as much data as possible! Go to scienceweek.net.au for more details.

Vitamania: The Sense and Nonsense of Vitamins

New science documentary, launching worldwide in August, including on SBS in Australia. This year the world will spend over $100 billion on vitamins and supplements. Almost one billion of us take one regularly — or give one to our children. Every week, a new benefit is claimed. Some doctors point to research that shows they can be lifesavers. Many others claim that most vitamin products are useless, and some are downright dangerous. All of this provokes confusion. In a world where even the scientists disagree, how do we decide whether to take them, or not? How do we separate the sense from the nonsense? In Vitamania, the latest documentary made by Emmy Award-winning Australian filmmakers, Genepool Productions, Dr Derek Muller takes us on an epic journey, a worldspanning investigation of vitamin science and history. What he uncovers will confound opinions on all sides.
