For the first time in a while I’m quite upset about the fact that summer is over. Just the thought of dark and cold evenings depresses me a little bit. The only thing I’m looking forward to this month is fashion week. Oh, and my son is turning two at the end of the month, so I guess there are two things that I look forward to. Talking about this issue, we are very happy to have Pixie Lott on the cover! She’s a talented ar tist as well as a fashion and beauty icon. I talk to her about being the brand ambassador for KISS Nails & Lashes, her beauty secrets and fashion regrets (p24). The beauty editorial was shot by one of our favourite photographers William Clark (p28). Lucy based the looks around breaking beauty rules (spiky lashes, clashing colours, etc.) and just having fun with makeup. The fashion editorial (p44) in this issue was a very fun one to shoot, because we shot it at Neighbourhood, which is a stunning restaurant on Castle Street in Liverpool. We were highly inspired by how colourful it is and just had fun shooting it. Kerryn did an amazing job styling it and showcasing different coats for this season you will want to buy ASAP. If you feel like you need a wardrobe update for this season, Rachel’s got you covered. She picked beautiful pieces for both women and men (p52) that will transition your style from summer to autum effor tlessly. I’m also very excited about publishing stunning fashion illustrations by Kitty Fuller in this issue (p58). We haven’t published illustrations in a long time, so it’s always fun to do something a bit different. Thanks so much for reading the magazine. These brushes have become my favourite for appyling foundation and concealer. The largest one is my absolute favourite as it helps me achieve perfect complexio in a matter of minutes. Both of the smaller brushes are excellent for concealing. HD Oval Star ter Set, Brush Works, £18. This cream is proven to increase skin firmness by 16% and elasticity by 28% in just 10 minutes. One of the key ingredients, Alguronic Acid, boosts a variety of well-know anti-ageing ingredients such as Retinol, Vitamin C and others. CAN YOU TELL A BRIEF STORY OF WHEN AND HOW MISSFITS NUTRITION WAS ESTABLISHED? I’ve always been into health and fitness. I love eating well and exercising, but the one thing that was missing on my fitness journey was protein supplements; I just didn’t understand them and as a result I never identified with any protein brands out there. The brands on the market either catered to bulking or meal replacements, neither of which I wanted. I thought there needed to be a company that resonated with me and active women up and down the country. A brand with natural and nutritious products designed with our aims front of mind. And that’s how MissFits Nutrition was born! A brand for active women to become stronger, fitter and healthier and help #MakeEverySweatCount! WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FOR YOURSELF? I love being my own boss, I used to work in an off ice Monday - Friday 9 - 6 and I found that working by the company rules is extremely monotonous. It’s good to have the autonomy to work from home some days or schedule meetings to break up the working day. That being said, it’s impor tant to work alongside the team to bring out creativity in one another. We are a young vibrant and energetic star t up. With only 4 of us in the off ice we all get involved in every aspect of the business and I f ind it’s a great way of working. CAN YOU SHARE ANY PERSONAL TIPS OF HOW TO STAY HAPPY AND HEALTHY? Exercise is my stress relief. Of course I love the differences I see in my body from working out, but honestly, for me it’s more about how it makes me feel. It clears my head before work in the morning and sets me up for a great day of work. I always say to any of my friends who are frequently tired, just try incorporating the gym one or two days a week - it’s changed my outlook on life in an incredibly positive way. WHAT’S IN THE FUTURE FOR MISSFITS? ANY PLANS TO BRING OUT NEW PRODUCTS? Yes, so of course we have our protein powder ‘The Multitasker’, but we live in the age of convenience. Everyone is on the go and they are looking for healthy, protein based and low sugar snacks. So that is what we are in the process of making - an all-natural high protein, low sugar snack! Through my own quest to be healthier and content, I’ve been drawn to a holistic approach, which I would describe as developing a lifestyle that encompasses all aspects of vitality; so beyond the obvious exercise and nutrition, it involves meditation/mindfulness to help manage stress and being selective with the type of activities and enter tainment I expose myself to. It’s an awareness of all lifestyle factors that can affect my wellbeing. WHAT MOTIVATES AND INSPIRES YOU? WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE? My drive comes from a genuine desire to assist in the transformation of the collective human experience, to promote this holistic approach and demonstrate its massive potential for healing and progress on all levels. I’m inspired by the beauty, joy and creative genius of which we humans are capable of, and I praise anyone who unleashes these powers. I don’t have a single favourite quote, but type the name Alan Watts into YouTube and you’ll get the idea. HOW DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

If it’s not natural or disturbs the harmony of the body or nature, don’t eat/do it. Pursue a lifestyle that gives you longevity and lasting happiness, discard anything that conflicts with your hear t. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS A PT AMBASSADOR FOR SUNDRIED? WHY DO YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH THE BRAND? The concept that Sundried is built on being an ethical spor tswear brand before all else is exactly the type of thinking that we need to promote collectively. We have a synergistic relationship, which is par t of a larger effor t to create a culture that views not just health, but life and the world holistically—what use is being healthy if the world around us is falling apar t? Acknowledging the interdependence of life means taking responsibility for the impact we have on nature and others, as well as ourselves.

My days star t early training clients, often followed by a training session of my own. Once back home I find that this is a good time for a meditation/mindfulness practice to dissipate accumulated stress, however once a consistent level of balance has been achieved, this practice can be prescribed as and when it’s needed. After any client programs or admin is dealt with, I like to spend my evenings producing music, playing video games, reading or watching TV with my girlfriend—I produce instrumental hip hop and prefer reading/watching informative content, as well as an occasionally movie. WHAT ARE YOUR TYPICAL MEALS FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER? WHAT KIND OF SNACK DO YOU EAT? LOUISE FITZSIMMONS Owner of White Wolf Yoga & Kitchen - a plant-based kitchen and yoga studio based at 14 Cook Street, Liverpool, L2 9QU COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND PRIOR TO OPENING WHITE WOLF YOGA STUDIO AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A YOGA TEACHER? After college I decided that university wasn’t for me, but other than that, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I tried a load of different jobs, like working as an English teacher in Spain, doing a couple of ski seasons in Italy. I also travelled around quite a lot, but it got to the point where I needed to pick something and just do it. I remember I was in Majorca coming to the end of the job I had there. I knew I was coming back home soon, but didn’t know what I was coming home to. While I was there, I really got into yoga and had a brilliant teacher. My mum came over to visit and asked me, if I could have any job in the world, what would it be? And I said a yoga teacher. I looked into it a little bit, but it seemed something that was out of my reach: other teachers had been to India, studied for years, which I couldn’t afford, I had no real experience. But my mum said to just try it and that she and my dad will back me whatever I decide. So I star ted to look for courses and I found one in Liverpool. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t a revelation to me. I still wanted to do more, so I decided to go to India to Rishikesh, which is the bir thplace of yoga. I immersed myself in the experience and it completely changed me. When I was out there I knew that this was it for me, yoga was all that I wanted to do. When I came back, I star ted a small class in Liverpool that slowly grew, and after about a year and a half I thought that I would love to have my own studio space. WHEN DID YOU FIND THE SPACE AND WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT IT? I found it two years ago and fell in love with it instantly. The space wasn’t even officially on the market for rent, but my real estate agent knew what I was after and asked me if I would be interested in seeing this big old ballroom. I remember, I walked in and thought that this is it. There was no floor, the ceiling was falling down, but you could see the character and the beauty of the building – it felt like home. WHAT CHANGE HAS YOGA MADE TO YOUR LIFE PERSONALLY? It has completely changed me in a lot of different ways. I can’t remember the last time I went to a doctor. I feel energetic, sleep better, eat better and more consciously. I am vegan, which is funny because it is a real cliché. I remember doing the first yoga teacher training course and I wasn’t vegetarian or vegan then. My teachers were saying that you have to be a vegetarian if you are a yoga instructor, but at the time I didn’t get it at all. After about a year, 12 #INSPO Issue 11 | Fall 2017

though, something changed inside me and I decided to give up meat for one year, and after that I didn’t fancy it anymore. Slowly I gave up dairy as well, which felt a bit extreme at the time. My parents were rolling their eyes, but I just went for it and felt a million times better. Now my best friend, my parents and are vegan too. It is not something that you can force people into and you can’t preach it. It is something that you decide to do yourself. HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING A BUSINESS OWNER AND BEING A YOGA TEACHER? I am not business-minded at all and I’ve been learning so much these past couple of years. At the moment I do finances and other things myself, but I used to have some help with that in the past. It is hard, because yoga and business are like two opposites. If we could have this space for free, I would totally offer free classes, but that’s just not the reality unfor tunately. To be able to survive, you must have a business head on your shoulders. DO YOU SEE ANY CHANGES IN YOUR YOGA STUDENTS? The most rewarding par t of being a yoga teacher is seeing the changes in students’ lives. I want the studio to be as accessible as and as welcoming to anybody as possible. We have a great variety ages, from 14 to 80. There is also a good mix of men and women, which is great. I remember one of the students was really anxious about star ting yoga classes, but now he is a licensed yoga instructor and teaches at White Wolf, which I think is really inspiring and rewarding to me as a teacher. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR THE STUDIO? We are changing the focus slightly and won’t be running the kitchen daily but will focus on events like the soirée we hosted in July. We are also going to star t raw detox programme in October, maybe have a vegan cooking class. As I have mentioned before, I am juggling the studio, the business, the kitchen, and I’d rather focus on my own yoga practice to become a better teacher. We want to get a better use of our studio and to take a step back and do focus on what’s at the core of the business - yoga.


COLETTE NEWBERRY & MARK CURRY Founders of Be - a beauty star tup that delivers insight-first white space innovation to market through varied business models. WHICH PRODUCTS ARE YOU BOTH MOST EXCITED ABOUT AND USE YOURSELVES?

COULD YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELVES AND WHEN AND HOW YOU CREATED BE? Mark: I’m a dreamer, having always envisioned an innovation business built on the rock of insight that is able to organically grow where the oppor tunity is —free of compromise and limits. With all my ideas ready to go, I met someone who professed to par tner on my journey as an investor. Excitedly, I reviewed LinkedIn and picked people, without hope or agenda, and messaged those I would love to work with. Colette was front and centre of that very shor t list. I messaged asking if she wanted to be par t of something special and she wrote back instantly (keen!) and I asked where she would like breakfast. However, on the cusp of Be launching, the investor pulled out. I had to ring Colette and explain that I could not pay her, could not guarantee that we could do the things we star ted to plan, but she decided to stand with me in creating a business that puts insight and consumers first and let everything else build itself. Then, after turning down two multimillion pound offers, we agreed a deal with the perfect par tner. Spending my last £11.08 on G&Ts and plotting how we can show the world how Be products can make them feel fabulous in an instant and additionally have longer term benefits. Colette and I exist solely to be the ‘Worlds’ red lipstick’. Be is about the feeling, not the physicality of beauty. The aura, not the aesthetics. Because when you are on point and on your game, you walk taller, freer and with a bounce that everyone recognises. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO HAVE ONE UMBRELLA BRAND WITH LOTS OF MINI ONES BRANCHING OFF? HOW MANY MINI BRANDS ARE YOU LOOKING TO LAUNCH IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

Surprisingly, Mark is the first one to test all things glittery and shiny—there are some incredible products launching in BOD shor tly, which he has given the seal of approval on! I am the original lazy beauty user, so I’m really excited to launch a range of skincare with the core values of simplicity and efficiency (which also looks gorgeous for a bathroom selfie!). But what we both are most excited by are the ranges that really tap into some real issues people face — those skin problems that prevent you leaving the house. If we can help the poeple with troublesome skin with a range of products that actually work, then we couldn’t be happier! DO YOU COME UP WITH THE CONCEPTS FOR PRODUCTS YOURSELVES? HOW DOES A PRODUCT ‘COME TO LIFE’? Mark: Yes, we always star t insight first. We know the beauty industry inside and out, and what ‘sells’, but make a point of ignoring this and tapping first into issues that consumers face. Colette: Once you have that core insight, you build out to a solution that makes sense for them, and then star t to work on product formulations that work (Mark’s Science background is a HUGE help), packaging that looks great (something I will not compromise on!), and then build out communication strategies that speak to the consumer simply and effectively. WHAT INSPIRES AND MOTIVATES YOU? Mark: People. Every time. We are building out a team of like-minded, passionate and energetic people who work to the same goal of making our brands the best they can be. Seeing the Be team’s reaction as a product comes to fruition is priceless — it doesn’t get more motivating than that! IF YOU HAD ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT A BUSINESS, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Colette: Get comfor table with ambiguity! We could never have dreamed of where we would get to with Be, and the journey we would go on. One day the world might look pretty scary, then suddenly something clicks and you get that little win you’ve needed! Our Be mantra is ‘blind faith!’

Colette: We are vociferous in our challenge to launch multiple propositions as fast as we can to answer as many consumer needs as possible. Our challenge to launch true white space innovation has got us to 6 unique brand propositions, which we plan to get to market in the next 12 months — we are strapped in and ready for the ride ahead!

HELLOFRESH WORDS: Jurga Skeiryte

HelloFresh is a global provider of fresh food at home that originated in Germany, but is now serving nine markets, including the UK. HelloFresh provides carefully planned, locally sourced weeknight meals delivered to your door at the most convenient time for each subscriber. To test the service, I chose the Veggie Box, as I am trying to incorporate more plant-based meals into my diet. HelloFresh doesn’t offer a vegan box as of now, but the Veggie one is suitable for vegetarians. I was able to choose which day of the week the box will be delivered, which I think is great, because you can plan your meals for the whole upcoming week—that’s something I like to do myself. The huge box was delivered by a courier and was full of truly fresh ingredients, from garlic cloves to avocados and cheese. Any products that require to be chilled are wrapped in ice bags, which I thought was a great way of preserving them. The box comes with three meals either for two or four people (HelloFresh also offer Family Boxes). Ingredients for each meal come in separate brown bags that are colour-coded to match the recipe card, so it’s easy to know which bag is for which meal. You will be receiving three meals per week. Upon opening the boxes, I was mostly excited to see what kind of recipes I will get to try. I’ve been trying to be more adventurous with cooking, but I’m not the biggest fan of shopping for food and I always tend to come across some unusual spices that are essential for the recipe, and honestly, I’m just too lazy to go to different shops trying to find them, which is why I loved HelloFresh, because there’s no shopping and hassle required. The recipes were easy enough to make, although I did have to use quite a few different saucepans, baking trays, etc, so it’s not going to be as easy as popping a ready meal into a microwave (which is not healthy anyway). I’ve chosen my three favourite recipes and included ingredients and cooking method for you to try. You can also check out the archive of recipes on HelloFresh website and try a few before subscribing to the service, if you wish. I’m sure you’ll love them!

ROAST THE ONION Preheat your oven to 180°C. Peel and quarter the red onion. Put the onion wedges on a baking tray and drizzle on a little olive oil. Season with salt and roast on the top shelf of the oven for 20 mins. Turn halfway through to make sure they cook evenly.

PREP THE SALAD Cut the root off the baby gem lettuce and separate the leaves. Chop the tomatoes into wedges. Chop the ends off the cucumber and quar ter lengthways. Scrape out the seeds with a teaspoon then chop the cucumber into chunks at an angle. Put the lettuce, tomato and cucumber in a large bowl.

MAKE THE DRESSING Pick the basil leaves from their stalks and set aside. Finely chop the stalks. Peel and grate the garlic (or use a garlic press). Zest and juice the lemon. Pick the mint leaves from their stalks and roughly chop (discard the stalks). Put the mint, lemon juice, lemon zest and sumac in a small bowl. Stir in the olive oil for the dressing (amount specified in the ingredient list), season with salt and black pepper and set aside.

a salad of crunchy vegetables and toasted bread, Ingredients: • Red onion • Baby Gem Lettuce • Vine Tomato • Cucumber • Basil • Garlic Clove • Lemon • Mint • Sumac • Olive Oil • Ciabatta • Goat’s Cheese •Chickpeas Preparation time: 30 mins 4.5 of your 5 a day

FINISH AND SERVE When the ciabatta pieces are golden, remove them from the oven and turn the grill to high. Add the toasted ciabatta pieces to the salad. Top each ciabatta strip with three rounds of goat’s cheese. Place on the (now empty) baking tray and grill to melt the cheese, 1 minute. Toss the salad with half the dressing and divide between plates. Spoon on the warm chickpeas and finish with roasted onion wedges, a goat’s cheese toastie and a drizzle of the remaining dressing. Enjoy!

BAKE THE CIABATTA Slice the ciabatta in half, as if making a sandwich, then in half again lengthways. Keep one quar ter ciabatta strip per person whole and tear the remaining bread into 2cm pieces. Pop all the pieces on another tray and drizzle on the remaining olive oil (amount specified in the ingredient list), toss well then bake on the middle shelf of your even until golden, 7 mins. When the onion is ready, take out and keep to one side.

COOK THE CHICKPEAS Slice the goat’s cheese into even rounds (three per person). Drain the chickpeas in a colander and rinse under cold water. Put a splash of oil in a frying pan on medium heat. Add the garlic and basil stalks. Cook for 1 minute then add the chickpeas. Warm through for 2 mins and remove from the heat. Roughly tear the basil leaves and mix through the chickpeas.

DO THE PREP Preheat your oven to 200°C. Remove the root from the spring onion and thinly slice (keep the white and green par ts separate). Peel and grate the garlic (or use a garlic press). Halve, then remove the core from the yellow pepper and chop into roughly 2cm chunks. Zest the lime. Drain and rinse the kidney beans in a colander under running water. COOK THE VEGGIES

Put a splash of oil in a large saucepan on medium heat. Add the whites of the spring onion and cook for 3 mins. Add the pepper and cook until softened slightly, 5 more mins. Add the Poudre de Colombo, the dried thyme and half the garlic. Cook for 30 seconds, then add the kidney beans and diced tomatoes. Refill your tomato tin(s) a quar ter with water and pour that in too. Stir in the coconut milk and vegetable stock pot.

SIMMER THE SOUP Season with salt and black pepper, then bring your soup to a gentle simmer. Stir to dissolve your stock pot and cook for 10-12 mins.

MAKE THE CHIPS

While your soup cooks, make the tor tilla chips. Using some kitchen scissors, cut each tor tilla into eight triangular shapes. We used one tor tilla per person but if you want more, that’s fine - you have plenty!

BAKE THE CHIPS

Place your tor tilla pieces on a baking tray in a single layer and drizzle over some olive oil. Season with salt and black pepper and pop on the top shelf of your oven until golden and crunchy, 4-5 mins.

FINISH AND SERVE Once the soup is lovely and rich, remove it from the heat and squeeze in half the lime juice. Taste and add more if necessary. Serve your Caribbean soup sprinkled with lime zest and spring onion greens with some homebaked tor tilla chips on the side. Enjoy! 16 #INSPO Issue 11 | Fall 2017

DO THE PREP Halve, peel and chop the shallot into 1/2 cm pieces. Halve, peel and slice the red onion into thin half moons. Cut the cherry tomatoes in half. Peel and grate the garlic (or use a garlic press). Pick the mint leaves from their stalks and finely chop (discard the stalks). Cut the halloumi into four slices per person. Drain the lentils in a sieve and rinse under cold water.

CARAMELISE THE ONION Put a drizzle of oil in a small saucepan on medium heat and add the onion. Cook until really soft, 7 mins. Add the balsamic vinegar, pop a lid on and turn the heat down to low. Cook until nicely caramelised, stirring occasionally, 8-10 mins. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.

COOK THE LENTILS

paired with nutty lentils and sweet balsamic onions.

Heat a drizzle of oil in a frying pan on medium heat, add the shallot. Cook until soft, 5 mins. Add the tomatoes, a pinch of salt and black pepper. Cook for 5 mins more. Add the garlic, stir and cook for another minute. Next, add the lentils and season with another pinch of salt and black pepper. Stir and cook for 3 mins. Add the spinach, pop a lid on and remove from the heat. Set aside (the spinach will wilt inside the pan).

COOK THE HALLOUMI

Ingredients: • Echalion Shallot • Red Onion • Cherry Tomatoes • Garlic Clove • Mint • Halloumi Cheese • Lentils • Balsamic Vinegar • Spinach • Pumpkin Seeds Preparation time: 35 mins 4 of your 5 a day

While the spinach wilts, put another frying pan on medium heat and add a drizzle of oil. Once the oil is hot, lay in the halloumi slices. Cook for 3 mins on each side until golden then remove the pan from the heat.

ADD THE MINT Stir half the mint into the lentil mixture. Don’t worry if the spinach hasn’t fully wilted that’s fine!

ASSEMBLE AND SERVE Serve the lentil mixture in bowls with the halloumi slices on top. Spoon over the caramelised red onion and finish with the remaining mint and a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds. Enjoy! 2017 Fall | Issue 11 #INSPO 17

I heard so many great things about this foundation and it didn’t disappoint. It has been developed with olive-toned skin in mind, but its yellow under tones make it ideal for most people. It’s buildable so can be worn very light or worked up to a much heavier coverage. I’ve used the foundation for a natural no makeup look (it’s also on our beautiful model Jazmine in the #BFF story) right through to an older mother of a bride with rosacea. The droppers don’t work very well as the fluid is too thick, but once you get past that, these little bottles are the perfect shades of “daylight” and “candlelight”. They are quite metallic so I prefer to use them under foundation, but if you’re looking for a serious highlight these are fantastic over foundation too. Add a couple of drops to your cheekbones and Cupid’s bow for a soft, flattering look! Drop & Glow Luminizing Duo, The Algenist, £22

I was confused by the concept of this to star t with, but fell in love with it as soon as I put it on. It smells divine, contains SPF, makes your lips look more youthful and adds a subtle tint. It’s more a balm than a traditional lipstick and my lips haven’t been without it all summer. I imagine it will work just as well during the winter, keeping frosty chapped lips at bay! I am not usually into glitter: it’s that one cosmetic product that is a lifelong commitment, because once you’ve used it, you will find it on your person for years to come. However, I attended some music festivals this summer, and where better to play with some sparkly lips?! The adhesive that comes with this product does not budge. I ate, drank and even slept wearing it and it stayed put until I scrubbed at it with a face wipe and some oil. It doesn’t feel entirely comfor table on your lips and they did feel dry when I removed it, but as a one-off for par ty season, they are fabulous. Beautiful shimmery tones for blush, highlighting and bronzing in one handy palette. I’ve never really been one for styling my hair with a heated curler, I just can’t get the hang of them and I don’t usually have the time to sit and style my hair. Instead I tend to opt for the lazy option of sleeping with my hair twisted up in a bun or wound round a jersey headband to create some sor t of waves. But inevitably these waves drop out pretty fast as they’ve had no heat to set them. So I was really excited when I got asked to review the Curl Bar as I thought it’s about time I gave a heated styling tool another chance. My hair is quite long and I prefer loose waves rather than tight curls so I chose the larger 32mm bar. The device itself looks amazing with a soft touch black handle and gold plated styling bar, it scores 10/10 on appearance alone! I briefly read the instructions, but it seems pretty self explanatory. The on-off button is situated on the top and it features a control dial from which you set the temperature and curl timer that counts down from up to 10 seconds. A glowing light ring tells you when it’s heated up and ready to go. I plug it in and wait for it to heat up to my desired temperature, which I’ve set to 210 degrees. I set the timer to 10 seconds. I par t my hair into two sections and star t with the bottom layer at the front. The right angled bar really does make a such difference when you’re styling with it! My arm used to feel awkward and strained trying to manoeuvre it into the right position, but with this it feels so much easier and much less of a struggle. I wrap the first piece of hair around and press the timer, which counts down from 10 seconds. I leave it for an extra couple of seconds for good measure then unwind. My hair falls into a gorgeous wave, just what I was hoping for. I continue round my head to the opposite side, splitting it into four sections in total for a relaxed look. Once I’m done with the bottom, I do the same with the top layer. When I’m finished, I am really impressed with the result and it was all achieved in less than 10 minutes! My hair has a tendency to drop straight away, so I spray it with hairspray and hope for the best. After a couple of hours I’m pleased to see my hair is still holding the waves and has only dropped a little! I think if I were to use the Curl Bar when my hair wasn’t freshly washed, it would hold even better. I don’t expect miracles and I know my hair will always drop, but what impresses me the most about this tool is how easy it is to use and how much quicker it is. I even find it works great just to go over my hair in big sections when it’s a few days into a wash, just to give it a quick style boost. This is one styling product that I will most definitely be incorporating into my usual hair routine now. Thank God someone finally created a hair tool for dummies! A/W17 is an exciting season for makeup lovers. No-makeup makeup was nowhere to be seen on the catwalks and we are here for it. There wasn’t one colour that was prominent, but the key texture was metallic. And not just a touch of it - metallic eyeshadows were swept across the whole lid. If you prefer a less daring look, you can never go wrong with matte transition shades in your crease and a touch of metallic on the lid.

This palette from Sleek (below) has a good mixture of matte and shimmer shades, which is great for me as I like to use both depending on the occasion. I try this palette out during the day to begin with, star ting with ‘Negroni’ as a nice matte brown base colour. I then opt for ‘Mimosa”, which is a lovely neutral mink colour with just the right amount of shimmer and subtle enough for daytime. Straight away I’m impressed by the pigmentation. I use it a second time for a night out and this time I build up a few of the colours for a more dramatic look. My shadow is still perfectly in place by the time I get home, with barely any creasing. This is probably due to a good primer, but I’m still impressed. This palette must have been made for me, because the neutral colours are exactly what I go for and I also like the compact size, which is great for travelling.

A/W17 SHOPPING GUIDE WORDS: Rachel Evans

Shopping for the new season can be daunting—what statement pieces to invest in and what trends to buy in to? To make it a little easier, I’ve done some searching of my own and found some suggestions for you. These pieces will ensure you’re on trend this autumn, mixing high street with high end, so you don’t have to break the bank. One trend you won’t be able to avoid this autumn is pink. Everywhere you look there’s an array of pink from soft dusty blushes to bright and vibrant fuchsias. If you’re not afraid to stand out, then invest in a head turning pink coat or jacket—this snuggly H&M faux fur one is a dead ringer for THAT Gucci number, which I’m sure you remember, and at a mere fraction of the price! You may need to wait a couple of months to wear it, but boy will it be wor th the wait!

Another conversation star ter is the Miu Miu cropped velvet jacket with pointed collar and appliqué badge details—a definite investment piece. If you’re slightly nauseated by the thought of this colour, then try adding a pop of candy pink or dusky rose to an otherwise black or neutral outfit and you’d be surprised how easy it is to wear. This slouchy mohair sweater from H&M will look effor tlessly chic tucked into a pair of cut off jeans, a far cry from the bubble gum Barbie girl we’ve come to associate pink with.

Not only does this tick the space box, it also merges nicely with the suiting trend. Tailoring and androgyny are nothing new to the catwalk, and this season is no exception. If like me, you favour a trouser suit rather than a dress, then currently you are spoilt for choice! Zara in par ticular has a great selection of two piece trouser suits. This little number in a chic 1940s blue colour has to be one of my favourites! Layer a navy blue roll neck jumper underneath for ultimate masculine vibes. Zara Wide-cut Trousers With Dar ts, £29.99

If you’re feeling a little more generous, then why not treat yourself to this stunning Balmain blazer in rich emerald green velvet. Wear it with cigarette trousers and it will see you right through till Christmas. Now let’s not forget those staple pieces you need in your wardrobe each and every year. For me, the perfect transitional outerwear to take you seamlessly through summer to autumn is the classic trench coat. I’ve fallen for this one from Marks & Spencer which could be mistaken for Burberry at first glance. The only problem you’ll have here is trying to pick from one of the three available colours!

You’ll also want to invest in some new season jeans. I personally buy more and more jeans than ever now with so many different options available on the high street at such good prices. If you’re unsure, go for the versatile straight leg which will go with anything from a Breton stripe top and trainers, to a silk blouse and heels. Try this pair from H&M, the Autumnal stripe detail is a nice touch and they are great for affordable quality. Accessories wise be sure to get yourself a pair of statement earrings. Chandelier jewels, beads or tassels—whatever you go for—make sure they are XXL. Zara has a colourful selection that will jazz up even your most humble outfit.

This season for you guys it’s all about the right colours, and one such colour you’ll be spor ting this autumn is orange. Before you run a mile thinking of Wotsits and Donald Trump, hear me out! Mixed together with neutrals like camel and cream or navy blue and grey, it’s actually not that daunting. If you’re a bit of a colour-phobe then rather than going head to toe Orangina, simply introduce a single piece or a flash of colour to your outfit. This jumper from Zara is the perfect way to subtly add the colour to your autumn wardrobe. Or try these check trousers if you’re a bit more adventurous. Outerwear is another good way to wear bold colours. Team this orange jacket from CP Company with dark blue jeans and a navy sweater to balance out the bold hue. Another prominent colour for the season is camel, a classic that never goes out of style. A more subdued and wearable shade of the orange spectrum, you can wear this colour head to toe this season to gain even more style points. I’m sure many of you already own a classic camel coat, but this autumn we’re branching out from just outerwear to sweaters, trousers and accessories. Being a warm neutral it’s possible to wear this colour all over tonal, so try a t-shir t underneath an over shir t, or a knitted jumper underneath your trusty wool coat. This utility style workwear jacket from Cos is a great transitional piece. And this Topman polo makes a versatile layering addition to your wardrobe.

You can easily embrace the trend head on with the addition of accessories—team this Zara cap with your camel coat and smar t trousers for a contemporary twist on an otherwise classic outfit. On the opposing side to smar t tailoring, another trend to emerge this season is an update of the slogan t-shir t. Slogan knitwear was massive on the men’s catwalk with tongue in cheek motifs, slogans and branding stitched across an array of knitted jumpers. For a designer take, look to Givenchy or Gucci at Flannels for their not so subtle knitwear. Or try H&M for a more affordable version that still makes a statement. Now it may be the continued 70s revival or the love of pyjamas, but printed silk shir ts were big at the menswear shows. Yes, they’re not just for the ladies! However, save yourself the money and the dry cleaning bill and opt for a viscose or cotton version instead which will still give you the sar torial satisfaction. Reiss and Paul Smith won’t disappoint.

NAME: Sarah Fuller a.k.a Kitty Fuller OCCUPATION: Fashion Illustrator and Lecturer at the Rare School of Fashion, Liverpool

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A FASHION ILLUSTRATOR. I have loved drawing since I was little, and I have always been pretty good at it. I won a lot of drawing and ar t competitions when I was young (including a year’s supply of sweets when I was 11), which made me feel really good about painting and drawing. I always knew I wanted to be an ar tist and decades later, I made it into the ar t world. I studied Ar t and Design, Theatre Design and Photography for my A-Levels, which was frowned upon, so much so that my parents had to go in and see the Head to say they were happy for me to pursue a creative educational path! Obviously being ‘too’ creative was not encouraged, it was for the dreamers, like me. Ar t School was the best time of my life. I knew from the minute I stepped into the studios, I had met my tribe. I primarily studied photography for my thesis at Undergrad level, in Canada. I fell in love with old school, hand printing colour photography. This continued into my Masters, but by time I graduated in 2004, digital photography was born and growing at a rapid pace. I no longer could keep up with the cost of investing in a new digital camera, software, a computer, etc. I loathed this era. The beauty of creating and hand printing your own photographic practice was gone. So I returned to my second love, drawing. WHO INSPIRES YOU? When I was at Ar t School, I was introduced to the work of Egon Schiele. I fell in love with his drawing style. The mark making, the raw aggressive lines, the emotive representation of a human being. He was so crass, it made me see the power of a simple hand drawn line. The simplicity was stunning. I will always reference Schiele’s work, when in need of inspiration. Photographers influence me the most: Cindy Sherman, Diane Arbus, Guy Bourdin, Nan Goldin and Philip Lorca-diCorcia. I love 56 #INSPO Issue 11 | Fall 2017

the aesthetic of ‘the cinematic’, this is what I always aim to translate in my work. THIS SUMMER THE CLOTHES SHOW LIVE HAD A REVAMP AND A RELOCATION, BEING HOSTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LIVERPOOL. WHAT WAS YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE EVENT? I worked with a positive body image company, called ‘Beautiful Is’ and led a Live Fashion Illustration Event at Constellations in Liverpool. We gave over 2000 school children a taste of what fashion illustration is all about. They sketched each other in fashion poses, to learn the fundamental rule of body shape, when drawing in fashion. It was an incredible experience! I also sold my own work at a booth at the Exhibition Centre. YOU HAVE A WHOLE CRYING GIRL SERIES – WHY THIS PARTICULAR ICON AND WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT? My Crying Girls Series, was born out of my adoration of one par ticular painting. Roy Lichtenstein’s pop ar t work Drowning Girl. I just love it. You know when you see something and cannot stop thinking about it? That is exactly the feeling I got with this work. It haunted me, in a good way. The square canvas frames a wonderful array of organic shapes, kind of like a washing machine or a whirlpool! And central to the composition is a fabulously glam girl, heavily mascara laden (an absolute must for any water related escapades!) claiming she would rather die than have the absent hero, Brad, save her. It is so so cinematic! So much drama in one single frame. I wanted to recreate the energy of this work, but using fashion as the primary subject. After lots of sketching and filled sketchbook pages, my Crying Girls were born. My girls only cry over fashion, cer tainly not men. I grew up in an era where a girl’s Manolo Blah-


niks were the Holy Grail, not her bloke. Very Carrie Bradshaw! Also fashion is very much maintained within the perimeters of being labelled, Fashion Illustration or Fashion Design, and being kept as an immediate communication at the side of the catwalk. Yet it does not have a place in Fine Ar ts? So my work encompasses a blurring of the lines between illustration and displaying it on the walls of the gallery. WHAT IS NEXT FOR KITTY FULLER? My Crying Girls series will continue to grow and evolve, reflecting the seasonal changes direct from the catwalks. My practice as an ar tist is always oversized. I love working on a big scale. This has led me into the world of interior design and wallpaper. So next, I aim to take my girls’ narrative into the world of wallpaper, pattern and print. I also lecture Fashion Illustration and Fashion Photography at the Rare School of Fashion in Liverpool. We teach Btec Level 3, so we prepare the students for either industry or fur ther education. I absolutely love teaching and engaging the students in the world of drawing! Using my platform, through my Kitty Fuller social media, I aim to create a contemporary dialogue around Fashion Illustration through a blog. There is so little outside of London to suppor t this subject, I want to get the concept of fashion and drawing back into the mainstream. It’s so impor tant to keep this dialogue open, alongside the practical and tactile skills of actually being a maker. We all need a break from our digitally screened lives, and the role of drawing is an excellent way to tap into our creative brain. WHERE CAN WE BUY YOUR WARES? While test driving the Citroën C3, there were a few things that I really enjoyed about it. I do appreciate a more modern design and C3 does not disappoint. It’s got an ‘urban capsule’ look, which is different from the competing brands. The bash-proof Airbumps on each side of the car are also a highly recognisable design element as well as a functional one. Citroën’s Airbumps are rubber panels inser ted into the doors and bumpers, aimed at preventing parking scrapes. I also appreciated how silent the engine was. It was a pleasure to drive the C3 for longer intervals of time as well, because the road and wind noise are low and the engines runs smoothly. My passengers really enjoyed the panoramic roof and generous leg room in the car. I need to mention the sound system in the car as well. I tested it on a very high volume to see how it performs and it didn’t disappoint at all - the sound was excellent. The Digital Nav 7” touchscreen was easy to use, I was able to play music from my phone as well with a USB jack. Overall, I think that Citroën C3 is a great city car with a fair price.
