Ambassador to the Arts
As Guide for the Arts Ambassador to the Arts this year I intend to put my energy toward encouraging people, especially the young, to engage with music in all its inspiring forms. The experience of music builds friendships and communities and expands the heart; it opens new horizons of joy and solace, and creates deeper connections between us all. There are no musical words for the complexities of sub-prime mortgages, or for the tactical divisions between political candidates. Music joins people in what is universal in their experience, and that is the richest gift of all. These times can be likened to a smoldering field growing green shoots before our eyes. We live in a center of creativity, undaunted by dire predictions. In Boston, music is at the forefront: new groups arise from all corners. So please join me in an endeavor to make this the most enlivening year ever for the arts in Boston by taking people you love to concerts, the ballet and dance recitals, chamber music, and jazz clubs, museums and the theater. There is no better way to build a community of spirit and love than to infuse our lives with art. Sincerely,
Benjamin Zander 2

The American Repertory Theater
Prometheus Bound
The American Repertory Theater—A.R.T. —is one of the country’s most celebrated resident theaters and the winner of numerous awards— including the Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and numerous local Elliot Norton and I.R.N.E. Awards. In 2002 the A.R.T. was the recipient of the National Theatre Conference’s Outstanding Achievement Award, and in May of 2003 it was named one of the top three theaters in the country by Time magazine. Founded by Robert Brustein in 1980, over its 29-year history the A.R.T. has welcomed major American and international theater artists, presenting a diverse repertoire that includes new American plays, bold reinterpretations of classical texts, and provocative new music theater productions. The A.R.T. has performed throughout the U.S. and worldwide in 21 cities in 16 countries on four continents. It has presented over 200 productions, over half of which were premieres of new plays, translations, and adaptations. Last fall the A.R.T. welcomed its new Artistic Director, Diane Paulus. Under her leadership, the Theater has developed a new initiative, Experience the A.R.T., which seeks to revolutionize the theater experience through a sustained commitment to empowering the audience. This initiative recognizes that theater is not just a play on the stage, but also a social occasion for people to come together and experience community. This audiencedriven vision speaks directly to the A.R.T.’s core mission— “to expand the boundaries of theater.” 12

text and lyrics by Steven Sater (from the play by Aeschylus) directed by Diane Paulus music composed by Serj Tankian An outcry against tyranny, the new rock musical Prometheus Bound illustrates one man’s struggle against the brute force of a ruthless dictator. Written by Tony Award and Grammy Award-winning lyricist and playwright Steven Sater (Spring Awakening) with music by System of a Down lead singer and Grammy Award-winning composer Serj Tankian, this bold new musical is inspired by Aeschylus’s ancient Greek tragedy about the suffering of Western civilization’s first prisoner of conscience. A.R.T. Artistic Director Diane Paulus stages this world premiere production in Oberon, immersing the audience in an environment that has the Dionysian energy and rebelliousness of a rock concert.

Boston Ballet follows the heart-breaking tale of a temple dancer and a young warrior kept apart in life and united only in death. The ballet has a rich, lavish set design and production elements which conjure up The Arabian Nights and Bollywood. The ballet contains the monumental Kingdom of Shades scene which traditionally features 32 female dancers entering the stage in single file in a dream-like sequence. Boston Ballet will present the Florence Clerc staging with vivid, new costumes and the enchanting scenery that are cornerstones of this classic.

The Boston Globe wrote, “Boston Ballet has carved its own niche with an extravagant production featuring lavish sets and costumes, live music, striking choreography, and first-rate dancing.” “Live music is one of the production’s strongest elements, and the orchestra plays with tremendous clarity and verve.”

Performed at The Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA, 527 Tremont Street. Sung in English, with a prologue by Richard Beaudoin—a special BLO commission and world premiere.
Agrippina march 11, 13, 16, 18, 20 and 22, 2011
George Frideric Handel composer Vincenzo Grimani librettist Agrippina wants her son to be the emperor of Rome. She promises anything to everyone standing in her way. The fresh soaring music by Handel showcases crazy, hothouse humanity. Sung in Italian with projected English translation.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream april 29, may 1, 4, 6, 8 and 10, 2011
Benjamin Britten composer Peter Pears Librettist (from William Shakespeare’s play) The thrill of the chase is so much more intriguing when Shakespeare pens the words and Britten adds his touching, edgy, and very funny score that leaves characters wondering whether they are in a dreamscape or a nightmare. Sung in English with projected titles.

Boston Philharmonic
In 1979, 96 enthusiastic players, amateurs, students, and professionals and a dynamic and probing conductor named Benjamin Zander joined together to found the Boston Philharmonic. Today, the musicians represent the original spirited blend, and account for the passion, high level of participation, and technical accomplishment for which this ensemble is celebrated. Each Boston Philharmonic performance is preceded by one of Benjamin Zander’s pre-concert lectures, which prepare listeners to understand the ideas and the structure of the music they are about to hear. The Philharmonic’s commitment to reaching and educating a wide audience is maintained by their Music Without Boundaries program which raises money to provide subscriptions for schoolage students and to distribute tickets through local charities.

Boston Symphony Orchestra
The first Boston Symphony concert, in the Old Boston Music Hall, was performed under the direction of Georg Henschel, music director of the BSO from 1881-1884. Symphony Hall, one of the world’s most highly regarded concert halls, was inaugurated on October 15, 1900. In its long history, the BSO has had only 14 music directors. Seiji Ozawa became the BSO’s thirteenth music director in the fall of 1973, following a year as music advisor and three years as an artistic director at Tanglewood. His historic 29-year tenure, from 1973 to 2002, exceeded that of any previous BSO conductor; in the summer of 2002, at the completion of his tenure, he was named Music Director Laureate. Besides maintaining the orchestra’s reputation worldwide, Ozawa reaffirmed the BSO’s commitment to new music through the commissioning of many new works (including commissions marking the BSO’s centennial in 1981 and the TMC’s fiftieth anniversary in 1990), played an active role at the Tanglewood Music Center, and further expanded the BSO’s recording activities. In the fall of 2001, James Levine was named to succeed Seiji Ozawa as music director. Maestro Levine began his tenure as the BSO’s fourteenth music director—and the first Americanborn conductor to hold that position—in the fall of 2004. His wide-ranging programs balance great orchestral, operatic, and choral classics with equally significant music of the 20th and 21st centuries, including newly commissioned works from such important American composers as Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, John Harbison, Peter Lieberson, and Charles Wuorinen. 32

DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park
The DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park is a public museum of art established to educate as broad and diverse a public as possible about modern and contemporary American art. The Museum accomplishes this mission by focusing primarily, though not exclusively, on the art of the New England region. DeCordova educates through exhibitions, collections, classes, outreach programs, and a full schedule of activities designed to enhance our public’s engagement with art and artists. The DeCordova Sculpture Park encompasses 35 acres of beautiful rolling woodlands and lawns, and is the largest park of its kind in New England. The Sculpture Park is open to the public every day of the year from dawn ’til dusk, and contains approximately 75 artworks at any given time.
Out of the Box: Photography Portfolios from the Permanent Collection through october 30, 2010 In collaboration with one of Boston’s premier venues for photography, the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University (PRC), DeCordova has invited their former curator and now independent curator Leslie K. Brown to organize an exhibition from the museum’s extensive photography collection. In addition to touching upon the history of photography portfolios as it relates to photohistory and the history of collecting multiples, Out of the Box highlights the history and strengths of the DeCordova’s permanent photography collection. 46 guide for the arts 2010-2011

DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park Platform 3: Halsey Burgund, Scapes through november 14, 2010 Halsey Burgund is a musician and sound artist who lives and works in Bedford, Massachusetts. Burgund’s projects are collaborative and provide participants with an active role in content creation. Part of generation Wiki and the democratization of knowledge, Burgund uses open source platforms, GPS technology, and interactivity to create musical scores from participants’ spoken words that continuously evolve in real-time. Scapes, Burgund’s project for Platform 3, creates a two-way audio experience for museum visitors influenced significantly by their physical location on DeCordova grounds. Participants will use handheld wireless devices and headphones to listen to audio and also to make their own recordings which will be immediately assimilated into the piece for everyone to hear.
Existed: Leonardo Drew through january 9, 2011 Existed is a mid-career survey of the New York-based artist, Leonardo Drew, highlighting his career-long interest in the cyclical nature of creation, decay, and regeneration through a selection of large-scale sculptures, installations, and works on paper.
Rubbers: Martha Friedman through January 9, 2011 In her sculptures, Brooklyn-based artist Martha Friedman depicts tricks and balancing acts, while arguing for the possible sexual connotation in everything. Referencing the history of art, from high modernist abstraction to minimalism to the Duchampian ready-made, Friedman is interested in locating the point at which common objects slip into abstraction and, even more so, eroticism. For her first solo museum exhibition in the Northeast, Friedman presents Rubbers, a collection of cast rubber sculptures that explore the nature of sculptural and bodily materiality through food items and rubber’s most ubiquitous form: the rubber band. 48 guide for the arts 2010-2011

DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum Platform 4: Type A: Barrier through january 9, 2011 Since 1998, New York-based Adam Ames and Andrew Bordwin have been artistic collaborators under the moniker Type A. So named for their interest in competition and assertiveness, Ames and Bordwin have produced a body of performance, video, and photographic work that explores the physical and psychological dimensions of male competition and collaboration. In recent years, they have expanded their interests to the changing nature of public space as a result of this same male competition in the form of a growing, post-9/11 security culture: aggression posing as protection.
Pixnit: Folie que la nouveauté Spray Paint
Site-specific installation commissioned for The Café @ DeCordova Pixnit is the pseudonym, and perhaps alter-ego of an artist whose identity is currently unknown. The artist adopted this name (based on the Latin phrase me pinxit, “I painted this,” which often accompanies artist signatures on European Late Medieval and Renaissance paintings) in 2006, to protect herself as she embarked on an ambitious project of urban guerilla graffiti art in Boston and Los Angeles. Now Pixnit increasingly turns her attention to the creation of large scale site-specific installations in places devoted to contemporary art, like galleries, art fairs, and alternative spaces. Folie que la nouveauté, commissioned and designed for The Café @ DeCordova, is her first museum installation.

DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum Event, a site-specific installation that transforms DeCordova’s Window Gallery into a space for experiential immersion and reflection on current events. The title of Hongisto’s installation references an influential book written by economic philosopher Nassim Nicholas Taleb in 2007, in which Taleb posits that our understanding of the world and economic models are fraught with fallacies and omit important information. As his example, Taleb relates that in the 18-century Europeans had only seen white swans, leading them to conclude that all swans were white. However, the “discovery” of a black swan in Western Australia belied this conclusion and demanded a revision of knowledge. People now use the phrase “black swan event” to describe the unlikelihood of individuals and markets to accurately assess the possibility of events and information we cannot imagine or have never encountered.
Platform 5: Bartow + Metzgar Dewey Family Gallery
november 16, 2010–spring 2011 Over the past year, artists Paul Bartow and Richard Metzgar have built and manned a two-person structure in the Sculpture Park, the Morphology Field Station for Sensing Place, for their ongoing research into DeCordova’s site. This fall they will unveil their findings with a large-scale installation in the Museum’s Dewey Family Gallery. Typically reserved for DeCordova’s permanent collection, the Dewey Gallery will be transformed into a living archive and reinterpretation of the Museum’s physical, historical, and conceptual landscape. Architecture, drawings, photographs, videos, and found objects will be interspersed with selections for the Museum’s collection as an in-depth examination of the complex relationship between land, time, and culture inherent in an art museum and park.

Handel and Haydn Society
Handel and Haydn
The mission of the Handel and Haydn Society Society’s Artistic is to perform Baroque and Classical music Director Harry for chorus and period-instrument orchestra. Christophers Founded as a choral society in 1815 by a group of Boston merchants, Handel and Haydn is among the oldest continuously performing arts organizations in the country. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Harry Christophers, the Society is a leader in Historically Informed Performance, in which music is played using the instruments and performance techniques available to the composers in their day. The Orchestra is made up of a core group of musicians from this country and abroad who are specially trained to play period instruments. And while the Handel and Haydn Society’s music is rooted in the past, its place in the musical present is vital and dynamic. The Massachusetts Cultural Council has praised the Society for its “vitality” and willingness to “take risks and explore new musical horizons.”

Harvard Art Museum 2010-2011 Exhibitions Re-View ongoing exhibition
This survey features a selection of over 600 objects drawn from the collections of the Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, and Arthur M. Sackler Museums that reflects the diversity and richness of the Harvard Art Museums’ holdings. Well-known objects are included alongside rarely displayed works in thematic gallery spaces: the first floor features European and American art since 1900, Islamic and Asian art is on the second floor, and Western art from antiquity to the turn of the last century on the fourth floor. Re-View represents a powerful distillation of the collection, balancing a wish to make available major works, familiar works, and works integral to the Art Museums’ core mission of teaching and research. Re-View is on long-term display at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum while the Art Museums’ building at 32 Quincy Street —the former home of the Fogg and Busch-Reisinger—is closed for renovation. This major renovation and expansion project, designed by architect Renzo Piano, with completion anticipated in 2013, will unite the three museums in a single state-ofthe-art facility.

Comedy of Errors opening: may 21, 8:00 pm Richard III opening may 21, 8:00 pm
The renowned British Propeller Theatre Company will perform Shakespeare’s history Richard III in repertory with Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors in a special residency to end the season. Richard III centers on one of the great characters of world literature, the Machiavellian Richard, Duke of York and his jealousy-driven ambition to unseat his brother and become the King of England. One of Shakespeare’s funniest and most youthful plays, Comedy of Errors tells the story of two sets of identical twins separated at birth who are surprisingly reunited, but not before a series of slapstick mishaps of mistaken identity and more occur. The much beloved story has been adapted for centuries into opera, film, and musical theatre. The all-male Shakespeare has drawn international acclaim for its rigorous approach to the text with a modern physical aesthetic. The New York Times declares, “The daring, the dazzle, and the pure craft of this company is absolutely exhilarating.” Propeller Artistic Director Edward Hall (Two Men of Florence, Rose Rage) says, “I want to rediscover Shakespeare simply by doing the plays as I believe they should be done: with great clarity, speed and full of as much imagination in the staging as possible.”

Institute of Contemporary Art
The Institute of Contemporary Art strives to share the pleasures of reflection, inspiration, provocation, and imagination that contemporary art offers through public access to art, artists, and the creative process. An influential forum for multi-disciplinary arts, the Institute of Contemporary Art has been at the leading edge of art in Boston for more than 70 years. Like its iconic building on Boston’s waterfront, the ICA offers new ways of engaging with the world around us. Its exhibitions and programs provide access to contemporary art, artists, and the creative process, inviting audiences of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the excitement of new art and ideas. The primary activities of the ICA are threefold: to present outstanding contemporary art in all media, including visual art exhibitions, music, film, video and performance, that is deserving of public attention and has not been presented in depth to Boston audiences; to provide innovative experiential learning opportunities for people of all ages through direct encounters with artists and art making; and to design interpretative programs that provide context, develop appreciation, and add meaning to contemporary art and culture.

Gabriel Kuri february 2—july 4, 2011 Gabriel Kuri is among a loose collection of brilliant young artists from Mexico to gain international attention in recent years. As in the recent Damian Ortega show at the ICA, this is Kuri’s first solo museum exhibition in Boston. Kuri makes “witty, materially economical conceptual art with a political bite” (The New York Times). Using familiar materials such as receipts, newspaper, or plastic bags, Kuri focuses our attention on contemporary consumer culture and the way money mediates almost all our human relationships and daily transactions. Approximately 30 sculptures and 15 collages will be on view, including Untitled (Superama)—a series of three, nine-foot tall tapestries intricately hand-woven in Mexico to resemble Wal-mart receipts. www.guideforthearts.com

Through sound work, sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, photography, video, and performance, The Record combines contemporary art with outsider art, audio with visual, fine art with popular culture, and established artists with those who will be exhibiting in a U.S. museum for the first time.
Eva Hesse: Studiowork july—october 2011 The German-born, American artist Eva Hesse played a central role in the transformation of sculpture in the 1960s. Over the course of her career, Hesse produced a range of experimental works alongside her large-scale sculpture. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum displays an art collection of world importance, including works that rank among the most significant of their type. Exhibitions examine historical and social perspectives of works of art, resulting in a truly enriching experience for visitors to the Museum. The permanent collection is today a source of inspiration for educators, thinkers, and contemporary artists. The special exhibition gallery on the first floor of the historic Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was closed at the end of June 2010 to allow for preparatory and preservation work in the historic galleries related to the construction of the museum’s Renzo Piano-designed new wing. As a result, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum will not present any historic or contemporary exhibitions in 2011. The Gardner will continue to present signature floral installations in the interior courtyard garden—including the annual Hanging Nasturtiums and the new Chrysanthemums in the Courtyard displays—honoring Isabella Gardner’s horticultural legacy and the changing of the seasons, in addition to ongoing concerts, lectures, and other programs. Special exhibitions will return to the Gardner Museum upon completion and the opening of the new wing in early 2012.

Artists-in-Residence Program
In 1992, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum reached out to the artist community in the search for renovation. Rarely are artists given an active role in the reshaping and rethinking of an institution; here, though, through the Artist-in-Residence program, a celebrated museum has undertaken to support the imagination through creativity and learning and in so doing has strengthened the founder’s legacy.

exhibits Nicholas Nixon: Family Album july 28, 2010–may 1, 2011 Among the most compelling of Nicholas Nixon’s series of photographs are the portraits that he has made of his close-knit family. These photographs, taken over time, explore the nature of long-committed relationships. The exhibition features the entire sequence of the celebrated portraits of the artist’s wife, Bebe, and her three sisters. Taken annually, the Brown Sisters pictures reveal gradual changes in their physiques and shifts in their relationships. The exhibition also includes photographs of the artist’s daily life with Bebe and their children Samuel and Clementine (born in the early 1980s), which enable viewers to share in the daily interactions and joys of parenthood. Also included in the show are recent portraits of Bebe and selfportraits that stand for the steadiness of long marriage. Nicholas Nixon, who teaches at Massachusetts College of Art, is one of the most celebrated American photographers of our generation. The Brown Sisters photographs are a promised gift of James and Margie Krebs. Many of the other works in the exhibition are loans from the photographer.
Avedon Fashion 1944–2000 august 10, 2010–january 17, 2011 Richard Avedon was one of the greatest image-makers of the 20th century. He revolutionized fashion photography with his imaginative, spirited portrayals of the “good life” showing beautiful women wearing extraordinary clothes in irresistible settings, as well as memorable portrayals that are both elegant and reserved. The upbeat spirit and innovative design of his compositions caught the eye of editors and art directors at Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue—the primary magazines for which he worked—while his vision of the modern American woman, one of wit, individuality, and fast-lane glamour, captivated the public. His enormous success defined the role of the high-profile fashion photographer that we know today, and many of his 74 guide for the arts 2010-2011

Museum of Fine Arts images have become icons of photographic history. Avedon’s career as a fashion photographer is displayed decade by decade in this exceptional traveling exhibition from the International Center of Photography in New York, the first comprehensive survey of Avedon’s fashion photography since 1978.
Chinese Master Paintings from the Collection september 4, 2010–february 27, 2011 “Chinese Master Paintings from the Collection” highlights some of the most rarified masterpieces from the Chinese painting canon. Two themes emerge from the exhibition. First, the exhibition presents a concentration of imperial works, including the Thirteen Emperors scroll from the Tang dynasty (618–907), considered the oldest court painting in existence, together with paintings and calligraphy personally created or commissioned by four generations of Song emperors. The nature of their manufacture and commission, as well as their meanings beyond the immediate pictorial content, are discussed in the exhibition. Secondly, key works from the show demonstrate highly sophisticated use of literary text in close conjunction with images, representing some of the earliest instances of such integration in the Chinese tradition.
Scaasi: American Couturier september 25, 2010–june 19, 2011 This exhibition celebrates the designer Arnold Scaasi and the MFA’s recent acquisition of his archive and more than 100 of his designs. Arnold Scaasi, who began his business in New York in the mid-1950s, was one of the few New York designers to concentrate on custom-made clothing rather than ready-to-wear. He has designed for the 20th century’s most celebrated artists and most fashionable socialites, including Broadway, TV, and movie stars such as Arlene Francis, Mitzi Gaynor, Barbra Streisand, Diahann Carroll, Mary Tyler Moore, and Elizabeth Taylor; Palm Beach and New York socialites including Mary Sanford, Ivana Trump, Joetta Norban, Gayfryd Steinberg, and Edna Morris; and First Ladies Mamie Eisenhower and Barbara and Laura Bush. His work has always been synonymous with luxurious materials, exuberant color, and refined silhouettes. Scaasi became an immediate success upon launching his first www.guideforthearts.com

Museum of Fine Arts ready-to-wear line in 1956. By the end of 1958, he had won the Coty American Fashion Critics Award for best designer of the year and had seen his clothing featured on the covers of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, all before reaching age 30. Despite his success, the growing emphasis on a youth market and changes on Seventh Avenue caused the designer to stop making ready-towear and to focus on his custom clientele. He has said that he preferred working directly with his clients making luxurious and dramatic garments that suited their lifestyles.
Kristin Baker: New Paintings october 2, 2010–march 27, 2011
Since receiving her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts (1998) and her MFA from Yale (2002), Kristin Baker has gained international recognition for her distinctive painting process. Instead of brushes on canvas, she uses squeegees and scrapers to slide acrylic paint across large PVC or acrylic sheets. Individual marks are created by masking sections with tape, filling with paint, and peeling clean or ripped edges away, over and over. This collaged layering of streaked color evokes the acceleration of matter across a surface, light through space, and action over time in ways that blur conventional definitions of painting. For the MFA, Baker extends her interests in transparency, form, and speed: she is creating four new large-scale works that reflect the cascading light, bold lines, and dynamic curves of the I.M. Pei-designed Linde Family Wing, where they will be exhibited in the Community Arts and SMFA Gallery. This will be Baker’s first solo museum exhibition in the U.S., and it is the first MFA project made possible by the Museum Council Artist in Residency Program Fund, which supports highly visible presentations and engagements with contemporary art.
Artists Abroad: London, Paris, Venice, and Rome 1825–1925 november 11, 2010–june 26, 2011 A tour abroad exposed artists to new environments, historic architecture and monuments, and famous art collections. It also enabled them to receive instruction from continental masters and interact with daring avant-garde artists. “Artists Abroad: London, Paris, Venice, and Rome 1825-1925” features works on paper by 76 guide for the arts 2010-2011

Embroideries of Colonial Boston: Samplers november 20, 2010–march 13, 2011
The embroideries of colonial Boston girls and women have long been treasured family possessions and are now much sought after by collectors. The charm and craftsmanship of the Adam and Eve samplers, pastoral pictures with leaping stags and galloping hunters, as well as crewelwork bed hangings and delicately embroidered baby caps bring to mind a warm domesticity; however, as a group they also reveal much about the lives of Boston women and their role within colonial society. The first of three exhibitions in the Edward and Nancy Roberts Family Gallery in the new wing for Art of the Americas, “Embroideries of Colonial Boston: Samplers” demonstrates the role these schoolgirl exercises played in educating Boston’s genteel young women. The use of samplers was common in Europe, and when the first colonists to New England arrived they brought their samplers with them to help educate their children. The exhibition will feature a pair of 17th-century samplers brought to Boston as well as two 17th-century American examples clearly illustrating the connection between Great Britain and the colonies. During the 18th century, samplers evolved from their original format as collections of embroidery stitches and designs into more pictorial works that could be proudly hung in the family home. Distinctive sampler styles developed throughout Boston that can be associated with specific neighborhoods. The exhibition will feature many of these styles, including Boston’s most famous samplers—those including the depiction of Adam and Eve that were woven by girls from the North End of the city.
Modernist Photography 1910–1950 november 20, 2010–july 3, 2011 “Modernist Photography 1910–1950” features approximately 40 American modernist photographs representing highlights from the Museum’s own collection as well as The Lane Collection. Museum of Fine Arts 3 galleries in the new Art of the Americas Wing, this exhibition focuses on the concept of the camera as modernist tool in the hands of American photographers during the 1910s through the 1940s. Comprising four sections—American vernacular modernism, portraits and nudes, still life and close-up, and still life and abstraction—each section reflects significant innovations in 20th-century American photography and major strengths of the Museum’s holdings. The exhibition presents prints by well-known artists, including Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, and Walker Evans, as well as major figures in The Lane Collection—Charles Sheeler, Edward Weston, and Ansel Adams—along with work by highly inventive, but less wellknown names, such as Paul Outerbridge, Wright Morris, Doris Ulmann, Arthur Siegel, and Dorothy Norman. Also featured in this gallery will be two oil paintings and a graphite drawing by Georgia O’Keeffe and Charles Sheeler.
Mirror of Holland: Drawings from the Maida and George Abrams Collection november 20, 2010–march 6, 2011 One of the remarkable aspects of seventeenth-century Dutch visual culture is the extraordinary number of gifted artists— even if we leave aside artists of Rembrandt’s caliber—who were active in those years. This is true not only for painting but also for drawing. The Maida and George Abrams Collection is one of the finest assemblages of Dutch drawings ever brought together, featuring works from the late sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. The core of the collection, however, is the 17th-century drawings. “Mirror of Holland: Drawings from the Maida and George Abrams Collection” features more than 45 works, many of which, particularly the figure drawings, are studies for works in other media, such as paintings or engraved illustrations. Others were conceived as finished works in their own right. The subject matter is highly varied: portraits, landscapes, and scenes of everyday life coexist with more traditional allegorical, mythological, or religious themes. A special feature of the Abrams Collection is the highly finished studies of natural history subjects.

Museum of Fine Arts Fresh Ink: Ten Takes on Chinese Tradition november 20, 2010–february 13, 2011 In this groundbreaking exhibition, contemporary Chinese ink painters engage in dialogue with classical artworks from China’s past. At the core of this exhibition’s concept is an artist-inresidency program. Leading artists from China and the Chinese diaspora have come to Boston to study the MFA’s superb collection of Chinese art, allowing them to create new works in direct response to the Museum’s permanent collection. In the exhibition, the new works and the masterpieces they refer to will be juxtaposed in the new Gund gallery—the ancient will historicize the contemporary, while the contemporary will revitalize the ancient. The MFA has selected ten artists who, despite their disparate backgrounds, are bound together by their deep engagement with traditional Chinese ink painting. A few of the artists work in quiet, contemplative modes, such as the landscape painters Li Huayi, Arnold Chang, Qiu Ting, Zeng Xiaojun, and Liu Dan. Some employ the large-scale and immediate impact of global contemporary art, such as Xu Bing and Qin Feng. The others, Yu Hong, Liu Xiaodong, and Li Jin, work with a keen eye for people and society. What is reflected in this group of artists, in their diverse backgrounds, and in their common connections to tradition, is a commitment to understanding the past while forging a vibrant future—a mission at the core not only of “Fresh Ink,” but of contemporary China itself.

Eye Spy, Playing with Perception open through june 2011 Eye Spy features engaging works that explore the act of perception. Through manipulation of light, form, color and line, leading contemporary artists show viewers how perception is based as much on what we think we should see as on what we actually see. Abstract sculptures create surprisingly recognizable shadows, for example; holographic images fool us into thinking we’re seeing 3-D. On view in PEM’s interactive Art & Nature Center, Eye Spy encourages visitors to examine how perception and illusion influence the way we interpret the world.
Faces of Devotion, Indian Sculpture from the Figiel Collection open through december 2011 The Peabody Essex Museum recently acquired the Dr. Leo Figiel Collection of Indian sculpture––widely regarded as the finest collection of its kind. This exhibition presents a dramatic selection of ritual bronzes spanning the last millennium featuring depictions of deified heroes, pastoral gods and goddesses, and totemic animal spirits. These bronzes were principally made for Hindu ritual practice in the west and southwest regions of India and are the best examples of local and vernacular artistry. A complement to neighboring galleries of traditional and contemporary Indian art, this exhibition offers an opportunity to explore the connections between India’s artistic past and present.
