TIME NOVEMBER 2, 2013 – FEBRUARY 23, 2014 Time presents a selection of historical and contemporary artworks, objects, and artists’ projects that engage with ideas of time. Throughout history, philosophers and scientists have advanced new, sometimes conflicting, ideas regarding the nature and perception of time. Current thought on the subject, based upon quantum physics, is extremely complex. Nevertheless, our finite lifespan seems to have endowed us with an intuition of time, even if we have not considered its precise character. The concept of time enables us to live with a sense of order and regularity; to conceive of duration, and past, present and future; and to maintain a sense of our place within this apparent continuum. EGYPTIAN GALLERY ONGOING Florida’s only Egyptian gallery is now open. The gallery offers a unique opportunity to learn about one of the world’s oldest and most mysterious civilizations from Egyptian Gallery its surviving objects, including Photo: Tyler Loy an Egyptian sarcophagus and mummy. PIOTR UKLAñSKI: ESL DECEMBER 5, 2013 – MARCH 16, 2014 Appropriating the acronym for English as a Second Language, Piotr Uklañski’s upcoming exhibition at the Bass Museum of Art will be titled ESL. As Uklañski embraces this acronym as a descriptive signifier of his own status as an immigrant not fully integrated into American society, this title also points to his unconventional conceptual and aesthetic art practice—an oeuvre that suggests irreverence towards mainstream art. His exhibition will showcase a precise but eclectic selection of works from his wide-ranging practice, which includes sculpture, painting, photography, performance, and film. Combined with selections from the collection of the Bass Museum of Art, Uklañski’s works will address issues related to his ESL status—whether through their outsider relationship to American pop culture, their aspirations over the fabled American Dream, or through Americanized references to Polish history and art. As an immigrant living and working in the birthplace of Abstract Expressionism, Uklañski states, “Neither English nor abstraction is my mother tongue. These paintings ‘speak’ an aesthetic ESL.” VANITAS: FASHION AND ART MARCH 13 – JULY 20, 2014 Vanitas: Fashion and Art examines the theme of vanitas as expressed in avant garde ready-to-wear and haute couture, as well as in contemporary paintings, sculptures, industrial design, and new media. As a meditation on the ephemerality of earthly pleasures and worldly accomplishments, vanitas artworks incorporate allusive imagery to suggest life’s transience and more explicit representations of momento mori. Fashion, with its accelerated cycle of obsolescence, explicit manifestation of status and material success, and potential for a narcissistic self-regard, is therefore an especially apt medium for vanitas. The exhibition will include works by contemporary designers and artists. The installation will also highlight rare examples of the Bass Museum’s remarkable collection of historic frames by incorporating them spatially in the installation to create a dynamic and interactive engagement of artworks and viewer.

Included in the exhibition are twelve recent monumental wall and floor sculptures, widely considered to represent the apex of Anatsui’s career. The metal wall works, created with bottle caps from a distillery in Nsukka, are pieced together to form colorful, textured hangings that take on radically new shapes with each installation. Anatsui is captivated by his materials’ history of use, reflecting his own nomadic background. Gravity and Grace responds to a long history of innovations in abstract art and performance, building upon cross-cultural exchange among Africa, Europe, and the Americas, and presenting works in a wholly new, African medium. This program seeks to activate the urban landscape with art—surprising and engaging residents, visitors, and passers-by with outdoor works of art in unexpected places. Sculpture, murals, sound installations, video, and other interactive works of art will interrupt people’s daily routines and encourage thoughtful interactions with the city and its communities. For the exhibition, Pinzón selected 20 workers, dressed them in costumes of popular American and Mexican superheroes that corresponded to their employment, and photographed them going about their usual work day. She identifies each by name along with their hometown, the number of years they have been working in New York City, and the amount of money they send back to their families each week. CAUGHT ON FILM: PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE COLLECTION OCTOBER 8, 2013 – JANUARY 5, 2014 Investigating the shifting boundaries between seeing and spying, the private act and the public image, Caught on Film explores how cameras have transformed the nature of looking as it easily crosses the line into surveillance and invasion of privacy. With historical and contemporary photographs, this stimulating exhibition presents some of the camera’s most unsettling uses including surveillance, celebrity stalking, and documentation of disaster. Caught on Film poses compelling questions about who is looking at whom and why, with photographers such as Gregory Crewdson, Robert Doisneau, and Edward Steichen. JAMES ROSENQUIST’S “HIGH TECHNOLOGY AND MYSTICISM: A MEETING POINT” NOVEMBER 23, 2013 – APRIL 6, 2014 This portfolio of seven prints feature Pop artist James Rosenquist’s characteristic use of varied images assembled to create a dizzying collage. Speaking of the portfolio in 1982 he said: “The questions I hope to raise in this work are: how will our relationship with computer education, the young people's fascination with electronic games, and the need for robots change our lives? People are still animals. In the future, however, will we select hi-tech surroundings, or prefer to live like lambs in a meadow? How will high technology relate to religion? In Eastern philosophy, one can reincarnate into people, animals, and plants. A big question is could it go a step further?” Little did Rosenquist know when he created these visual metaphors for the intersection of the electronic with the bucolic, how information technology would soon infiltrate nearly every aspect of life.

POP CULTURE: SELECTIONS FROM THE FREDERICK R. WEISMAN ART FOUNDATION JANUARY 12 – APRIL 23, 2014 When the Pop art movement first surfaced in the mid-1950s, artists sought to challenge traditional conceptions of art-making by incorporating consumer culture and everyday objects into their works. Artists during this period transformed icons associated with mass media, comic books, and popular culture into visual expressions that often reflected a Keith Haring (American, born 1958), growing societal infatuation Untitled, 1983, ink on vinyl tarpaulin, 78 ½ with consumerism. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami, kicks off Art Basel Miami Beach 2013 with the opening of Tracey Emin: Angel without You, the first American museum exhibition dedicated to the acclaimed British artist Tracey Emin. On view from December 4, 2013 through March 9, 2014, this is the first-ever exhibition to focus on Emin’s works in neon, a crucial aspect of the artist’s practice that began with her iconic The Tracey Emin Museum (1995), which opens the show. The exhibition explores how Emin’s neons have played an essential role in the development of her work, marking a shift from her early diaristic and confessional style to a more cryptic and open-ended form of expression. Organized by MOCA as part of the Knight Exhibition Series and curated by Bonnie Clearwater, Tracey Emin: Angel without You comprises more than 60 works from the past two decades. The exhibition title is drawn from a new large-scale neon work by Emin, on view in MOCA’s courtyard during the exhibition. Installation view. Photo by Daniel Portnoy

THE FOUR PRINCELY GENTLEMEN: PLUM BLOSSOMS, ORCHIDS, BAMBOO, AND CHRYSANTHEMUMS NOVEMBER 14, 2013 – JANUARY 26, 2014 This exhibition will feature the recently acquired album of ink painting of orchids and bamboo by the Qing dynasty scholar Qian Zai (1708–1793). Inspired by both the beauty and resilience of nature’s flora, Chinese painters and poets have imbued particular plants with auspicious meaning, literary resonance, and scholarly virtue. Together plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo, and chrysanthemums collectively exemplify qualities of the ideal Confucian scholar: strong, humble, moral, and resilient. Qian Zai was such a man. After serving the emperor as Vice-Minister of the Board of Rites in Beijing, he returned to his hometown in Zhejiang province where he became renowned for his paintings of orchids and bamboo. NEW WORK/NEW DIRECTIONS: RECENT ACQUISITIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHY NOVEMBER 7, 2013 – JANUARY 12, 2014 During the past two years, the Norton’s holdings of photography have grown significantly. This exhibition will celebrate this growth, highlight some of the new additions, and offer insight into new artists and areas of institutional interest. Through donations and purchases, more than 350 new works have entered the Photography Collection during the past 24 months. These recent acquisitions range from the 19th century motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge to recent large-scale narrative works by Canadian-based artists, The Sanchez Brothers. Contextualizing strong aspects of the collection, bolstering weaker areas, and forging new directions, the growth of the Collection includes significant works by artists such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Eileen Cowin, Holly Roberts, and Sam Taylor-Wood. L.A. STORIES: VIDEOS FROM THE WEST COAST NOVEMBER 7, 2013 – JANUARY 12, 2014 Story-telling and narrative strategies have been staples in contemporary image making since the 1970s. Many of the artists

who are working today using video have continued to explore this fertile genre. L.A. Stories brings together four artists whose work embraces and exploits the narrative potentials of video. Their works range from straightforward storytelling to the isolation of evocative narrative-laden moments that string together. The projections and installations that comprise this exhibition tell tales that speak as much to the artists’ own experiences as artists as to the broader experience of navigating and understanding contemporary life. Included in the exhibition are two artists, Eileen Cowin and Judy Fiskin, who have been mainstays in Southern California art scene for more than three decades. FAUX REAL – LOBBY INSTALLATION BY MICKALENE THOMAS SEPTEMBER 17, 2013 – AUGUST 31, 2014 The third sitespecific artwork for the Norton Museum lobby was created by Mickalene Thomas (b.1971, Camden, New Jersey). She is best known for her elaborate figurative paintings that Installation view Faux Real expand ideas of beauty through compositions inspired by sources as varied as popular culture, 19th century French painting, and the collages of Romare Bearden. Thomas has consistently worked with deconstructing and reassembling photographic images in her own collages, which often serve as reference for her paintings. This will be the first mural-sized artwork Thomas has created outside of New York.

INDUSTRIAL SUBLIME: MODERNISM AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF NEW YORK’S RIVERS, 1900–1940 MARCH 20 – JUNE 22, 2014 Featuring paintings by leading artists such as George Bellows, Robert Henri, John Marin, Reginald Marsh, Georgia O’Keeffe, and John Sloan, this exhibition examines the shift to urban views of New York’s waterways between 1900 and 1940 as Realists and Modernists conceived a new pictorial language to treat American industrialism. Having jettisoned the romantic ideals of forebears—such as the Hudson River School, who had ignored the industrialization of the region—these artists celebrated the changing way of life along the city’s waterfront. Instead of majestic mountains, they painted the modern waterways’ bridges, cranes, and ocean liners, using an increasingly sharp focus and borrowing ideals from the Machine Age. Twentieth-century artists took the elements of the Sublime, combined them with Modernism’s interest in structure and form, and applied them to humankind’s industry, thereby creating a new visual vocabulary for the modern era: the Industrial Sublime. QING CHIC: CHINESE TEXTILES FROM THE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY FEBRUARY 6 – MAY 4, 2014 This pendant exhibition to David Webb’s jewelry designs features a robe, embroidered silk panels, purses, and shoes that share Webb’s love of natural forms, especially flowers and animals. TO JANE, LOVE ANDY: WARHOL’S FIRST SUPERSTAR FEBRUARY 2 – MAY 25, 2014 As Andy Warhol’s first and most glamorous superstar, as well as a lifelong intimate, Jane Holzer holds a singular role in the understanding of Warhol as a prescient artist, media star, and focus of the 1960s cult of personality. This exhibition explores the rise of “Baby Jane” as an internationally known model. Fashions from Holzer’s career as a model, photographs by David Bailey, Nat Finkelstein, Billy Name, and Irving Penn, among others, as well as Warhol’s painting, sculpture, prints, and films featuring “Baby

DAVID WEBB: SOCIETY’S JEWELER JANUARY 16 – APRIL 13, 2014 This exhibition will explore Webb as a jewelry designer whose work was realized with technical mastery and who was viewed as a high-society figure whose clientele included Jacqueline Kennedy, Doris Duke, and Diana Vreeland. The exhibition will bring together some 80 extraordinary examples of Webb jewelry: necklaces, rings, and other pieces rendered in hammered gold, jade, coral, enamel, and precious stones. In David Webb: Society’s Jeweler addition, the exhibition will Coral Seahorse Brooch Courtesy of Jeannie Minskoff Grant feature preparatory drawings and special displays that will offer behind-the-scenes perspectives on the making of Webb jewelry. Artworks, photographs, publications, and advertisements also will situate Webb within the visual culture of the 1960s. THE POLARIOD YEARS: INSTANT PHOTOGRAPHY AND EXPERIMENTATION DECEMBER 19, 2013 – MARCH 23, 2014 This survey exhibition brings together ground breaking Polaroid pictures by forty artists spanning the period from the initial release of the SX-70 camera in 1972 until the present. The exhibition centers on experimentation and examines how the invention of instant photography—in particular Polaroid, a brand known for its innovation and responsiveness to artistic

most often found in the urban environment in which she lives. Cardboard, fabric, plywood, polystyrene, wire netting, scrim, and cement are among favored elements she manipulates to create sculptures that defy simple description, but are memorable for their presence. Barlow describes her work as “anti-monumental,” and defines the term as “seeing the monument as a kind of absurdity—because so often we don’t know what the monument is. We’ve lived through a decade where we’ve seen it literally topple in front of our eyes.” Several new sculptures and others seen only in Europe comprise this exhibition. Kravis Center The Palm Beach Symphony was founded in 1974 in recognition of the need for a professional orchestra in Palm Beach. The orchestra had a humble beginning, with only a few concerts a year, a part-time conductor, and a volunteer staff. It was not until Mrs. Ethel S. Stone became Chair of the Symphony’s Board of Directors that the orchestra became a cultural force in the community. The Palm Beach Symphony performs in a variety of historically important venues on the island of Palm Beach, including the Bethesda-ByThe-Sea Episcopal Church, the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, Mar-a-Lago, and The Society of the Four Arts.

IN THE SCULPTURE GARDEN: JEDD NOVATT DECEMBER 4, 2013 – ONGOING By the early 1970s, works of minimalism had come to dominate the landscape of public sculpture in the United States. Characterized by reductive, geometric forms fabricated in raw industrial materials like Corten steel and aluminum, its ideal products represent an exploration of the essential nature of sculptural practice and experience, engaging viewers in a carefully organized phenomenology of volume, weight, mass, and theatricalized viewing space. For the last decade, Paris-based American artist Jedd Novatt has been employing and manipulating key minimalist visual and material tropes—the cube, unyielding medium, towering scale—in order to evolve the now long-stalled project beyond its traditional static and reflexive nature. LOS JAICHACKERS: NIGHT SHADE/SOLANACEAE DECEMBER 5, 2013 For the opening of Pérez Art Museum Miami, Los Jaichackers are debuting a new project, Night Shade/Solanaceae. This work builds on their previous performances and collaborations, and responds to Miami’s unique cultural and visual landscape, which they have explored in multiple visits to the city during the last year. Night Shade/Solanaceae takes its title from a family of flowering plants indigenous to the New World. It references the history of trade, particularly the import and export of new and exotic fruits and vegetables, which linked South and Central America to Europe. Los Jaichackers’ performative project will include sculpture, video, and music. It will transform the museum into a site of cultural collisions, where music and art reflect Miami’s influence as a site of exchange and metamorphosis. PROJECT GALLERY: BOUCHRA KHALILI DECEMBER 4, 2013 – FEBRUARY 23, 2014 Bouchra Khalili (b.1975) investigates the experiences of identity, immigration, and transience. world. Khalili uses a mode of poetic documentation to illuminate the lived realities of an increasingly mobilized world. Her newest work, commissioned by Pérez Art Museum Miami, is the third and final chapter of The Speeches Series: A video trilogy (2012-2013). Each of these incisive, unadorned works focuses on the act of speaking, featuring five individuals who give powerful, subjective accounts of their personal experiences amid larger political and economic spheres. The last chapter of The Speeches Series, which will debut at PAMM, was produced in New York and focuses on immigrants who live and work in the city. These subjects reveal the political consciousness inherent to their clandestine lives and labor, creating a meaningful and urgent discourse on the contemporary, immigrant working class. AMELIA PELÁEZ: THE CRAFT OF MODERNITY DECEMBER 4, 2013 – FEBRUARY 23, 2014 Pérez Art Museum Miami will present a focused selection of works by Amelia Peláez del Casal (b. 1896 – d. 1968), one of the most important Cuban painters of the modernist era. A HUMAN DOCUMENT: SELECTIONS FROM THE SACKNER ARCHIVE OF CONCRETE AND VISUAL POETRY DECEMBER 4, 2013 – MAY 25, 2014 Pérez Art Museum Miami will present an extensive selection of works from the Miami-based collection of Ruth and Marvin Sackner. Founded in 1979, this “archive of archives” initially focused on concrete and visual poetry—including rare manuscripts and published works by international luminaries such as Augusto and Haroldo de Campos, Oyvind Fahlström, and Eugen Gomringer. The collection subsequently grew to encompass a broad array of historic and contemporary works that synthesize word and image. Rooted in the early to mid-20th-century European avant-garde, the collection provides a unique lens through which to examine the foundational movements of modernism, including Italian Futurism, Russian Constructivism, Bauhaus, De Stijl, Dada and Lettrisme, among others. PROJECT GALLERY: HEW LOCKE DECEMBER 4, 2013 – MAY 25, 2014 For Those in Peril on the Sea (2011) is an installation by Hew Locke (b. 1959), a British artist of Guyanese descent. It consists of dozens of scaled-down replicas of ships suspended from the ceiling, creating the impression of a massive exodus taking place throughout the architectural space above the viewer. It features a broad range of vessel types, from cigarette boats, catamarans, and cruise liners to ragged fishing skiffs and timeworn cargo ships. In light of Miami’s history as the site for numerous waves of immigration—particularly from the Caribbean, and specifically by sea—For Those in Peril on the Sea will have a particular resonance for the Museum’s audiences. With its significant links to the South Florida community, this installation, part of Pérez Art Museum Miami’s permanent collection, promises

a powerful initial experience for visitors to the new building. IMAGE SEARCH: PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE COLLECTION DECEMBER 4, 2013 – JULY 27, 2014 This exhibition presents a varied selection of photographs drawn from the permanent collection of Pérez Art Museum Miami, with a particular emphasis on the Cowles Collection—a gift of more than one hundred iconic works of the 20th century including photographs by Edward Steichen, Andy Warhol, and Rineke Dijkstra. Relying on contemporary strategies for organizing and understanding information, the exhibition will incorporate sequential and salon-style hangs in its installation. Allowing the viewer to see the works through visual cues and historical connections, looking at the image within the photograph, as well as relationships between photographs, this exhibition seeks to engender new ‘ways of looking.’ PROJECT GALLERY: MONIKA SOSNOWSKA DECEMBER 4, 2013 – SEPTEMBER 28, 2014

Sosnowska’s project for Pérez Art Museum Miami makes dramatic use of the double-height Project Gallery for which it was commissioned. AMERICANA DECEMBER 4, 2013 – MAY 1, 2015 Pérez Art Museum Miami began to acquire international modern and contemporary art in 1996. The need for expanded spaces to store, conserve, and display the growing collection was a principal driver in the Alfredo Jaar, A Logo for America, 1987-95 creation of this new Five cibachrome photographs mounted on Plexiglas12-3/16 x 20 inches PAMM facility. Known for his innovative adaptions of traditional Haitian iconography, which he engages in order to address contemporary social and political conditions, Duval-Carrié is presenting a series of large-scale paintings and sculptures. Involving extensive research, Imagined Landscapes presents lush tropical scenes that reference specific nineteenthcentury paintings executed in the Caribbean and Florida. DuvalCarrié’s works translate these historical images into his own contemporary aesthetic language, in order to address the manner in which the tropics of the Caribbean and Florida continue to be sold as tropical paradises, in ways that often obscure economic and social disparities that continue to be perpetuated in these contexts. CARIBBEAN: CROSSROADS OF THE WORLD APRIL 18 – AUGUST 17, 2014 Caribbean: Crossroads of the World will highlight over two centuries of rarely seen works—from paintings and sculptures to prints, books, photographs, films, videos, and historical artifacts—dating from the Haitian Revolution (c. 1804) to the present. This exhibition employs an inter-disciplinary approach to advance our understanding of the Caribbean and its artistic heritage, and combines works by figures such as Paul Gauguin, Winslow Homer, Wifredo Lam, and Renée Cox, Redcoat, from Queen Nanny of the Armando Reverón Maroons series, 2004 Color digital inkjet print on watercolor paper with works by 76 x 44 inches contemporary artists Courtesy of the artist

CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE: SURROUNDED ISLANDS AUGUST 14, 2014 – JANUARY 25, 2015 This Focus Gallery exhibition celebrates Surrounded Islands, Christo (b. 1935) and Jeanne-Claude’s (1935–2009) epic project from 1980–83. Working closely with the local governments and a small army of volunteers, the artists encircled 11 islands in Biscayne Bay with a total of 6.5 million square feet of pink, woven, polypropylene fabric. The result was a luminous, floating artwork that harmonized the bright hue of the fabric with the complex colors of the uninhabited, verdant islands, the shallow waters of the bay, and the light of the Miami sky. The exhibition will feature documentation of the project, as well as a selection of the largescale drawings that the artists created to support this expansive undertaking. BEATRIZ MILHAZES. JARDIM BOTÂNICO SEPTEMBER 19, 2014 – JANUARY 11, 2015 The first major U.S. retrospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes (b. 1960), the exhibition will feature the artist’s largescale abstract paintings inspired by Brazilian and European Modernism, Baroque forms, popular culture, and the decorations of Carnival. During the early 1990s, the artist developed an unusual painting technique, in which she adhered separate images executed in acrylic paint—such as flowers, arabesques, lace patterns, or peace-signs—onto canvases in a style that references collage, graffiti, and plastic decals. This practice results in richly textured surfaces that appear prematurely aged. The exhibition will include works produced over the last 25 years of the artist’s career and examine their evolution from softer, more decorative forms to harder-edged abstraction.

GEOFFREY FARMER OCTOBER 2, 2014 – FEBRUARY 22, 2015 Farmer (b.1967) is best known for his work with collage and his references to the genre’s modernist traditions, such as those produced by Dada artists at the beginning of the 20th century. The artist has also created numerous theatrical installations involving odd combinations of found objects that he transforms into awkward, puppet-like figures. His recent sculptures and installations have included kinetic elements that are often choreographed with sound. These pieces become theater plays or small operas with uncanny objects as their main performers. Creating mysterious and, at times, sinister environments, the artist’s work responds dynamically to the architectural and cultural contexts in which it is produced. ADLER GUERRIER OCTOBER 30, 2014 – FEBRUARY 2015 Miami-based artist Adler Guerrier (b. 1975) works in a variety of media, including sculpture, photography, prints, and collaged works on paper. Guerrier’s practice investigates of the mutability of text and image, and the variability of meaning. He is as interested in politics as he is in poetics, and his work explores the rich territory between them. Often using Miami as a physical site and an embodiment of realized (and unrealized) moments in American political and social history, Guerrier examines, repurposes, and sometimes fictionalizes the city through his work. Guerrier’s oeuvre is expansive in its engagement with the urban environment, art history, and materials, and this exhibition will bring together a selection of work from the last decade of his career alongside new work produced for this presentation.
