The Office of Academic Development The Office of Academic Development serves all Houston Methodist clinicians and researchers across our system to become better teachers, better mentors and better scientists. We work with individuals from all clinical and academic professions at all levels of training, from students to advanced clinicians and faculty. Our aim is to foster a culture of academic excellence at Houston Methodist by providing services that support our clinical and research staff. We provide customized skill-building workshops and individualized coaching of research projects, quality improvement projects, clinical and academic career development and mentorship guidance.

Individualized Coaching

Skill-Building Workshops

Clinicians and researchers can request a one-hour, individual coaching session

These skill-building workshops are designed to provide clinicians and

Academic Career Coaching

We provide individualized guidance on career paths and options for clinicians and researchers, especially effective during times of transitions. As medical residents become attendings or post-doctoral trainees become young faculty, a review of career aims and objectives can set you up on the right course.

Mentorship Coaching

which takes place every other Tuesday at 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Dunn Comal/Frio. We also provide our workshops to individual teams, customized to meet the needs of your group. If you are interested in our team providing one of our workshops for your group of 8 or more, or if you would like to suggest an academic topic for a future workshop, simply contact us at academicrequests@houstonmethodist.org.

We provide custom guidance on the principles of mentorship for both the mentor and the mentee. If you are interested in bringing your mentorship to the next level or if you are just starting out as a mentor, an individualized one-hour coaching session with us can help provide you with the right tools

Research and Statistics Coaching

The Office of Academic Development provides one-on-one consultations to talk you through your research. Our team will discuss your project in detail and offer advice on how to proceed with your research. Our team members are Masters- and Doctoral-level student interns specializing in research and statistics who are available to help walk you through your next steps of research design and data analysis.

Presentation and Education Coaching

We provide customized assessments and guidance on scientific and educational presentations. Whether you need to give a 15-minute talk at a conference or design a year-long course for your trainees, the Office of Academic Development can walk you through best practices in presentation styles and instructional design. We are also available to observe your teaching style and provide constructive feedback for improvement. You’ll leave this workshop with a clear understanding of what your research could look like and a set of next steps to get you on the right track.

Are you giving an upcoming presentation? Want to ensure your trainees or audience remember what you say? Come learn how to construct a one-time presentation so that it maximizes retention in your audience. You’ll leave this interactive workshop prepared to make any audience pay attention to and remember what you have to say.

Research 102: How do I choose a study design?

You’re planning a new study – how do you know which design is the right fit for your research question? Come discover how to select and customize a study design for your project in this fun and engaging workshop.

Research 103: What statistical test do I use?

Planning a new study includes considering which test you’ll need to use. Come join us for one hour of a practical and amusing review of statistical tests. Meant to make stats approachable for all of us, this workshop will take away any hesitancy you may feel about discussing the math in your research study.
