Molecular Diagnostics Core
The Houston Methodist Research Institute Molecular Diagnostics Core facility provides Houston Methodist investigators and the Texas Medical Center community with access to advanced molecular tools for research studies. All equipment is conveniently located in the Molecular Diagnostics Core Laboratory in Fondren 554. User training and instrument reservations can be scheduled using iLab.
FACILITY The Molecular Diagnostics Core provides investigators access to cutting-edge instrumentation for expression analysis, SNP genotyping, and other molecular assays. Some of the available technologies include: Capillary Electrophoresis – The Agilent 2100 is a microfluidics-based platform offering solutions for the analysis of DNA, RNA, proteins and cells. Typical applications include: • RNA sample QC prior to microarray or qPCR experiments • DNA Analysis of PCR/mPCR and RT-PCR products • Protein expression analysis • Protein purity during purification • Cell-based analysis in gene silencing or apoptosis Spectrophotometry – The NanoDrop® ND-1000 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer enables highly accurate analyses with remarkable reproducibility, eliminates the need for cuvettes and capillaries, and need for most dilutions. This technology is used for: • Nucleic Acid Measurement • Microarray labeling QC • Protein Measurement • Cell Culture Microarray Instrumentation – The Affymetrix GeneChip® Instrument System is one of the most advanced microarray analysis platforms available to generate reliable, Gene Expression Analysis and DNA Analysis data. The Dell Precision 490 workstation accompanies the GeneChip System.
THE GENECHIP® INSTRUMENT SYSTEM
Software • Affymetrix Software • Partek Genomics Suite
Our Specialized Services The core offers training for the use of instrumentation, assistance in the design of experimental protocols, and ongoing consultation and support. Core instrumentation is available for self-use by trained investigators.
