Translational Imaging Core Facilities
The Houston Methodist Research Institute Translational Imaging Core Facilities provide Houston Methodist and the Texas Medical Center community with access to advanced high-performance imaging for research studies.
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING The Magnetic Resonance facility houses a stateof-the-art 70 cm wide-bore 3.0 Tesla whole-body human magnetic resonance imaging scanner. Its configuration makes this facility the ideal environment for performing preclinical and clinical translational imaging research studies.
POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY (PET) FACILITY The PET facilities include a research PET clinic, a cyclotron and a radiopharmaceutical lab that is cGMP compliant for the production of radiopharmaceuticals. They produce the FDG ([18F]fluorodeoxyglucose) for Houston Methodist Hospital - the tracer used for doing PET imaging for our cancer patients. It concentrates in malignant lesions, but not in benign ones, so it is used for discriminating between the two and confirming cancer diagnosis. The PET facility comprises of the following: Cyclotron and Radiopharmaceutical Core has an on-site cyclotron, housed in the Research Institute building. This enables research studies that require rare custom tracers and short-half life materials, and/ or multiple doses in a single day. It includes a cGMP production laboratory as required for the production of clinical grade radiopharmaceuticals. PET IMAGING CLINIC is located on the first floor of the Research Institute building and operates latest generation scanners for advanced scintigraphic imaging suitable for a wide range of short and longer lived radioisotopes.
PRECLINICAL IMAGING FACILITY The Preclinical Imaging core facility provides researchers in Houston Methodist and the Texas Medical Center community access to the resources, services, and expertise necessary to perform multimodality imaging studies on preclinical study models, including PET, SPECT, CT, MRI/MRS, ultrasound and optical imaging. Available resources include the Inveon Dedicated PET System and the Inveon Multimodality SPECT/ CT system (Siemens Medical Solutions), the Caliper IVIS-200 system, and the Maestro in vivo fluorescence imaging system. Depending on the application, the core will provide users with full technical operation, comprehensive training, assistance with experimental design and data analysis, and ongoing research support.
Our Specialized Programs The Core Facilities are staffed by experienced research professionals and laboratory technicians who provide assistance with experimental design and specimen preparation, use of advanced imaging techniques, and use of complex imaging processing software for quantitative data analysis. We will help troubleshoot and optimize experiments to ensure the highest quality data is acquired. We offer comprehensive training, assistance in the design of experimental protocols, and ongoing consultation and support.
