WELCOME TO THE 21ST ANNUAL MAINE FAMILY BUSINESS AWARDS! We are pleased to come together tonight to honor an impressive and diverse group of large and small companies representing the best in Maine family business. This year, we received 166 nominations from across the state, of which 40 were selected as semi-finalists and 24 as finalists. As always, we are grateful to our talented team of judges who did the hard work of narrowing this amazing field to the seven winners we celebrate tonight. We also honor our second BerryDunn Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Harry Fraser for his many contributions to family business in Maine. Harry, President of the H.G. Fraser Group, LLC, serves on the IFOB Advisory Board and was instrumental in the transition of the IFOB from a program at the University of Southern Maine to an independent non-profit organization. Read more about Harry on page 6 and join us in celebrating his many accomplishments. We first presented this award in 2019 to Maddy Corson. For the first time, we will honor a Maine business and IFOB member with the National Service Award. Guilford-based Puritan Medical Products garnered national attention in 2020 as they became the preeminent manufacturer of the swabs used in COVID-19 testing. The company increased its production capabilities at lightning speed, building two additional manufacturing facilities and quickly onboarding hundreds of new employees to meet the demand. Learn more about Puritan and their amazing efforts on pages 8-9. Our theme for 2021, “Growing with the Times,” was reflected both in the content and the format of programs developed for our membership. Like all your businesses, IFOB had to quickly pivot to face the realities and challenges posed by COVID-19. In 2020, we offered more than 25 free memberships to help family-owned businesses weather the pandemic. While we have been offering Zoom programs since 2014, in addition to our in-person offerings, this became our primary platform. In 2021, we offered more than 60 programs, mostly online, including three new virtual offerings: Legal Lunches, Chit Chat with Cat and Tuesday Talks. We also added a new Next Gen group, Executive Blend, to our mix that includes CEO Central, Women’s Leadership Forum and Leaders in Transition. Our “Women in Family Business” program has been rebranded as “Fun & Function,” inviting men to join in the fun we’ve been having. We continued our internship program and added a part-time position of Marketing & Sales Coordinator to our team. We continue to grow and to be inspired by all our family businesses and the associate partners who support them in these challenging times. We couldn’t do this without the continued love and support of all in our IFOB family! Owner and Founder Shipyard Brewing Company

Fred Forsley, Owner and Founder of Shipyard Brewing Company

Fred Forsley is a Gray, Maine native, born the fourth of five children to Dr. Eli and Agnes Forsley. The Forsleys operated a boarding home for disabled veterans, and each and every member of the Forsley family pitched in to help with dayto-day operations. Fred believes that his entrepreneurial spirit is so engrained because of his parents’ commitment to their family business in Gray Park. The values that Fred learned from hard work, compassion and family support of this business helped shape him as the businessman he is today. “It wasn’t necessarily the biggest money-maker, but the feeling of community and hard work was very fulfilling.” Fred is the founder and owner of Shipyard Brewing Company, the largest brewery in Maine and a national leader in the craft brew industry. Shipyard grew out of the Kennebunkport Brewing Company and Federal Jack’s Restaurant and Brew Pub which he began in 1992 to turn around a troubled retail development in Kennebunk, Maine. These two businesses became the centerpiece of the property and continue to prosper today under Fred’s guidance. Fred also owns and manages the Shipyard Brew Pub in Eliot, Maine, ten Sea Dog Brewing Company Brewpub concepts

in Maine, New Hampshire, and Florida, two Shipyard Brew Haus locations at Sunday River and Sugarloaf, and The Inn on Peaks Island. Fred is a graduate of Cheverus High School and the Whittemore School of Business, University of New Hampshire with a degree in Business Administration. In 2009, he was honored with a President’s Recognition Award by the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. In 2015, he received Sugarloaf’s Summiteer Award for his continuous commitment to giving back to the cancer community in Maine. In 2015, Mercy Hospital created and bestowed on Fred the “Forsley Award”, which he was initially hesitant to accept. He ultimately agreed to accept it as a tribute to the individuals in his life who encouraged him to support and give back to his community. It is now given to honor corporate citizenship, to celebrate those in the community who are committed to making a difference. Fred’s legacy is just that: business leadership that fosters a sense of community, compassion and charity.

BERRYDUNN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

In 2019, in honor of the 20th annual Maine Family Business Awards, the Institute for Family-Owned Business (IFOB) Board awarded Maddy Corson the inaugural BerryDunn Lifetime Achievement Award. Tonight, we honor another longtime IFOB advocate and friend, Harry Fraser. Harry serves on the IFOB Advisory Board and was instrumental in the transition of the IFOB from a part of the University of Southern Maine to a separate non-profit 501(c)(3). Harry, along with many others, made enormous contributions of labor and love, overseeing the growth and development of the Institute. Harry is President of The H.G. Fraser Group, LLC, a management consulting firm specializing in helping businesses move to the next level. Harry has held numerous other leadership positions at prestigious Maine companies, including CEO of Alcom, LLC, a premier trailer manufacturer headquartered in Winslow; CEO of Johnny’s Selected Seeds, a 100% employee-owned company headquartered in Maine; CEO of Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers of Auburn; and manufacturing plant manager of an $800M business segment of Digital Equipment Corporation in Augusta. Harry holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Husson University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern Maine and is a Certified Business Valuation Analyst. He has a passion for family-owned businesses and is a student of ESOPs. He sits on the Board of Directors for a number of employee-owned and familyowned businesses and is past chair of IFOB.

We extend our thanks to our talented panel of judges who have taken on the tough job of selecting the 2021 Maine Family Business Award winners from an impressive list of finalists. Our judges, led by our returning facilitator, searched carefully through each entry to find the special gems that helped the winners rise to the top.

JUDGING FACILITATOR Anne Hussey – Partner, Quad Group and Board member Hussey Seating Company – 2003 Large Business Award winner and co-founder of the Maine Family Business Awards Anne Hussey, a sixth-generation owner of Hussey Seating Company, presently serves on the company’s Board and is past chair of the Family Council. Her work experience includes sales and marketing at Hussey Seating as well as 17 years in leadership roles at a Fortune 500 company. As a partner of Quad Group, Anne consults with family businesses to help them achieve optimal success. Anne is a graduate of Colby College (BA) and UNH (Executive MBA), and is a past board member of the IFOB, past co-chair of the MFBA committee, and worked with the IFOB board on a past rebranding initiative.

Reuben is a past chair of the Biddeford-Saco Chamber of Commerce, the Marketing Director of the Maine chapter of NACE, and a board member of Victoria Mansion. Chris Wasileski, Director of Development, Sea Coast Management Company – 2017 HUB Environmental Leadership Award Winner – Cumberland Crossing by OceanView Environmental Leadership sponsor Chris has been working with his father at Sea Coast Management Company for 17 years. Sea Coast Management develops, owns and operates OceanView at Falmouth and Highland Green in Topsham. Chris’s latest project in partnership with his father, John Wasileski, is called “Cumberland Crossing by OceanView” – an ecologically sustainable satellite community five miles from OceanView’s main campus in Falmouth offering standard solar electric panels, generators, and many energy efficient features in a natural setting. Cari’s career has been a journey of retail, management consulting and technology, all coming together to create and launch a brand in 2016 that celebrates family and friends in the kitchen. Joe Corey, President, Day’s Jewelers - 2019 Renys Large Business Award Winner Born and raised in the Waterville area, Joe spent much of his childhood immersed in Day’s, his family’s jewelry company, serving in several roles over the years. In January 2021, he was named President of Day’s Jewelers. Joe earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Southern New Hampshire. Joe serves on the Board of Advisors for JCK Las Vegas, the largest jewelry trade show in the country.

NATIONAL SERVICE AWARD PURITAN MEDICAL PRODUCTS CO., LLC

Institute for Family-Owned Business presents 2021 MAINE FAMILY BUSINESS AWARDS

We are proud to present IFOB’s first National Service Award to Puritan Medical Products Co., LLC. For over 100 years, this family-owned business which started with a single mint-flavored toothpick has forged a worldwide reputation as the trusted manufacturer of single-use products for controlled environments, diagnostics, and specimen collection, environmental, forensics, and genetics, medical, and microbiology media industries. In 2020, Puritan—North America’s largest manufacturer of testing swabs—was thrust into the national spotlight. In March 2020, as the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID19 a pandemic, the U.S. government contacted Puritan for help supplying the swabs needed for COVID-19 testing as demand was increasing at an exponential rate. The company increased production to seven days a week and within two months, its factory was running shifts 24/7 to meet the need. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) awarded Puritan a $75 million grant to build a new facility that could double production to 40 million swabs per month. By July 2020, the company had opened its new Pittsfield, Maine factory and onboarded hundreds of new employees to produce foam-tipped COVID-19 testing swabs. Through a series of subsequent DoD contracts and grants, Puritan has built two additional manufacturing

facilities and announced plans for a fourth factory in Orlinda, TN, its first plant outside Maine and the company’s largest. Puritan’s incredible work and ability to rapidly rise to meet the ever-evolving challenges of the pandemic have garnered international attention for the Guilford-based company. In 2020, Puritan was named Inc. Magazine’s Company of the Year. In a recent story, Bloomberg noted, “The world’s future depends, at least in part, on Puritan.” In June 2020, President Donald Trump paid a visit to Puritan’s Guilford headquarters to tour the company and thank employees for their dedicated service to the country. Puritan has previously been honored at the Maine Family Business Awards with the 2017 People’s United Technology and Innovation Award, and IFOB is pleased to count them as an active member of our organization. Today, we are proud to honor Puritan Medical Products in recognition of the Herculean efforts of the Templet and Cartwright families, their employees and partners for their ongoing efforts to meet the needs of our state, nation and the world in the fight against COVID-19.

ABOUT THE AWARDS The Renys Large Business Award, won by Day’s Jewelers in 2019, honors an outstanding company with 25 or more full-time employees that demonstrates excellence in all facets of business, including family involvement, succession planning, communication, value of being familyowned, and community service. The Maddy Corson Small Business Award recognizes an exceptional company that embodies the ideals associated with its namesake, who continues to inspire, support and connect individuals, organizations and businesses throughout Portland and beyond. SKORDO received the Maddy Corson Small Business Award in 2019. The Shep Lee Community Service Award honors one of the founders of the Institute for FamilyOwned Business and the ideals he embodied in his respect and concern for customers, employees and the community. W.S. Emerson Company received the Shep Lee Community Service Award in 2019. Chalmers Insurance Group Customer Service Award, honors a company of any size that continues to improve customer service and exceed customer expectations. The judges also consider the following criteria: innovative practices and systems; personal interactions and choices in how customers receive service and delivery; accessibility to customers and effectiveness in handling customer complaints; systems that reduce costs; and compassion and caring. The Nonantum Resort received the Chalmers Insurance Group Customer Service Award in 2019. People’s United Bank Innovation & Technology Award: Recognizes a company that demonstrates excellence in the development or creation of a new idea, method, or product to solve a problem; original, compelling ideas, innovation or technology; significant benefits to others; fulfillment of a market need or creation of a new market through a service or product; or use of applied science or innovative methods in product development or enhancement. In 2019, FHC, Inc. received the People’s United Bank Innovation & Technology Award.

Holiday Inn By The Bay First Generation Award recognizes a company of any size, with at least one family member serving as an active equity owner and at least one family member active in the business on a regular basis. The business must not have transitioned yet from one generation to the next. The honoree will be chosen based on the overall excellence among all the categories above. Fontaine Family - The Real Estate Leader received the Holiday Inn By The Bay First Generation Award in 2019.

Cumberland Crossing by OceanView Environmental Leadership Award honors a company that demonstrates exceptional efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, demonstrates environmental stewardship, engages others in conservation efforts, and champions sustainability. BEDARD PHARMACY & MEDICAL SUPPLIES—AUBURN Bedard Pharmacy & Medical Supplies has evolved from a small corner drug store and soda shop in 1898 to a thriving multi-generation family business using the latest technology, strategic partnerships and exceptional customer service to grow regionally and nationally. The Nadeau family purchased Bedard Pharmacy in 1965, with son Mike and wife Annette Nadeau purchasing the business from Mike’s father, Alcide, in 1996. The third and fourth generations are also actively involved in the business: Mike and Annette’s son Ben is CEO, son-in-law Sean is Director of Finance, son Chris is Director of Pharmacy, son Matt is Director of IT and granddaughter Emily recently began as a pharmacy technician. Over the past two decades, the company has pivoted to address the changing needs of its customers and communities, creating Bedard Medical to specialize in medical equipment and supplies and Bedard Senior Care to serve long term care facilities. Being early adopters of technology has enabled Bedard to stay on the forefront of their industry. Using specialized robots, Bedard Senior Care is one of the few pharmacies in the country to offer four different medication packaging options to long term care facilities, reducing medication errors and medication distribution times. To illustrate their dedication to their employees, they also have a “fun committee”, that plans events, outings, games, and gives their employees a chance to socialize outside the grind. While technology has helped the company grow—net sales have nearly tripled since 2014— people are what Bedard values most. “Patients first! There is nothing more important than making sure our patients get what they need. Our patients trust us to do what is best for them,” says Ben. “We also prioritize our staff. Our staff is our family. We want to see each and every employee grow, learn and achieve their goals.”

BERRY FRUIT FARM, LLC—LIVERMORE FALLS Berry Fruit Farm has been “Making life wholesome for families in the community we serve” since 1900, when Joel Gilbert’s great great grandfather and great grandfather started planting apple trees together. Joel and Melissa Gilbert have come back to the family’s century-old apple orchards to continue what their ancestors have started. Today, the company owns and operates two 25 acre “you pick” farms in the town of Livermore and a retail market location in Livermore Falls. Joel’s father and grandfather serve as advisors to the business, which draws local residents and travelers on their way to Rangeley and Sugarloaf. Many Berry Fruit Farm products are shipped throughout the U.S.. The company has grown steadily in terms of acreage, products an, services, and has built partnerships with local schools and the Good Shepherd Food Bank.

In 2020, the Gilberts put their mission into action at a time when their community endured multiple crises. During the pandemic they offered bulk staples to customers when the grocery store shelves were empty, providing a place where people still felt connected in a time of isolation. “We smiled, listened, cared and rose to meet the needs of our neighbors,” says Joel. When Pixelle Paper suffered a major explosion to their digester system, Berry Fruit Farm provided meals to Pixelle workers as they worked through this incredible disaster. Through hard work and strong leadership, Berry Fruit Farm ended 2020 with its strongest sales year ever.

BISHOP’S STORE, INC.—JACKMAN Bishop’s Store, a Jackman landmark, has been in business and family-owned since 1950. Paul Levesque had a dream and built the business, joined shortly thereafter by son Joseph and daughter-in-law Mamie. Over six decades, Bishop’s has grown from a small general store and gas station to a true one-stop shop for travelers passing through the region, selling everything from sporting goods and hunting licenses to stuffed moose souvenirs and arguably Maine’s best pizza, according to many customers. Their well-earned slogan is “if we don’t have it, you don’t need it”.

Bishop’s is always ready with coffee when the local fire department is out on a call, or a community fundraiser needs meals, donations or other help. Over the years, many members of the Levesque family have had an ownership stake in the business, upgrading and expanding the business with the addition of an ice cream stand, 20-unit motel, laundromat and more. In 2003, Joe and Mamie’s son Raymond assumed ownership of Bishop’s Store and Ice Cream Stand, while his brother Glenn took ownership of the motel. In the fall 2020, in the midst of the COVID pandemic, Kimberly Danforth, Joe and Mamie’s granddaughter, became the fourth-generation owner of Bishop’s Store and, along with her two sons and brother, Lucas, is enjoying keeping their family tradition alive and the business profitable. Under Kim’s leadership, Bishop’s Store delivered hundreds of meals to seniors and children during the spring of 2020 as the pandemic

CHILTON FURNITURE—SCARBOROUGH Chilton’s top priority is its team. “We know that if we start with talented team members who believe in the brand—and we take good care of them—the result will be an exceptional customer experience,” says Jen. A second priority of the Levins was to work with an accomplished wood furniture designer to introduce original designs. In 2020, these efforts earned Chilton a GOOD DESIGN Award—one of the most prestigious honors in international design—for Chilton’s Nautilus lounge chair. Chilton chooses local builders to produce most of these new designs and, as a result, the percentage of Chilton’s furniture built in Maine has increased from approximately onequarter to nearly 60% since 2014.

In 2014, the company was acquired by Jen and Jared Levin, who are committed to offering locally produced wood furniture designs and exceptional customer service. Chilton has showrooms in Freeport and Scarborough, and a recently opened showroom on Commercial Street in the Old Port. Chilton also sells to customers across the U.S. through its website and catalog.

These initiatives have been well received by customers. This year, for the first time, Chilton was voted “best furniture store” by voters in the annual Down East Magazine Best of Maine edition, and sales are on pace in 2021 to double from 2014 levels. The Levins plan to continue to build Chilton into a special business that one of their children will want to someday take over. This year, daughter Eva began working part-time at Chilton during her summer break, embracing all tasks with enthusiasm.

Franklin Printing’s roots are in the world of newspaper publishing. The company has evolved, now focusing on commercial printing specializing in offset, digital, wide format, direct mail and folding cartons; serving customers in Maine and throughout New England. Franklin Printing was founded in 1969 by Joseph Nemi; today, Joe’s sons, Greg and Dick Nemi, own the company, with Greg serving as

Franklin used this opportunity to invest $3.5 million in new equipment. The investments better positioned them in current and new markets, by adding capabilities and improving efficiencies. They installed a new die cutter and folder/gluer for their folding carton segment, enhanced digital printing technology by adding white ink and the largest investment was a HP Inkjet Web press. The new web press being the first of its kind in Maine,! and the first press in New England using the latest HP ink technology. Combined these investments have positioned Franklin Printing to be one of the most technologically advanced printers in the Northeast.

HORCH ROOFING—WARREN Peter Horch started working with his father, Don, in the family business in 2000. After years of learning about business, Peter decided to try his hand at owning his own business and founded Horch Roofing in 2003. Don, who has since passed, became an advisor whose influence and values live on in how Peter guides the company today.

Horch Roofing has become a disrupter in the roofing industry, demonstrating that roofing can be green. On a trip to the local landfill, Peter Horch realized how much his company alone was contributing to the more than 100,000 tons of roofing waste generated in Maine annually. In 2010, Horch Roofing began their Reroof and Recycle Program, recycling 100 percent of their roofing waste, which is converted into recycled products and paving materials. Peter says, “The pure volume and tonnage of material that we now recycle and reuse instead of adding to the local landfill or ‘landhill’ makes this a win-win situation for both my company and community. I sincerely hope that other local construction and roofing contractors are motivated to follow in our footsteps.” In June 2020, Horch Roofing celebrated 15 million pounds recycled since the start of the program. Horch Roofing runs their business nearly paper-free by using the newest roofing technologies on a daily basis. They use online CRM, and online estimation software, as well as technology that enables the company to measure roofs from the ground, keeping their sales team safe. Horch Roofing even uses apps for their entire company to

KENNEBEC CABIN COMPANY, LLC—MANCHESTER Maine. Over the last year and a half and despite a global pandemic, Kennebec Cabin Company has grown into a flourishing retail store featuring Maine artisans and craftspeople and an e-commerce store which has seen unprecedented growth. They recently opened The Woodshed, a bar, eatery and event venue that has quickly become one of central Maine’s most enjoyable hangouts and live music destinations featuring Maine craft beers, locally sourced sandwiches, and a newly renovated and expanded event venue.

Kennebec Cabin Company was created in February of 2020 by Chase Morrill, his sister Ashley Morrill and her husband Ryan Eldridge, also known as the Maine Cabin Masters, whose popular reality show is now filming its seventh season. The company emerged from Kennebec Property Services, founded by Chase and Ashley’s father, Eric, who passed away several years ago.

The businesses are family and dog friendly, providing a space for the whole family to safely enjoy all that Maine has to offer. Kennebec Cabin Company strives to give back to the local community wherever they can, hosting food drives, and other fundraising opportunities for local non-profits. The business truly is a family affair. Chase’s four children are involved in the business, including Maggie, his oldest daughter, who produces their “From the Woodshed” podcast and works in the retail store alongside her grandmother at least one day a week. Son Fletcher can often be found on the job site or at a special event. It’s not uncommon to see any number of nieces/nephews helping out from time to time. The Morrills come from a long line of creative craftspeople, some of whom create products for the store.

She had a passion for Maine-made products, participating in craft shows for years before opening her first bricks and mortar shop on Front Street in Bath in 2003. Since then, she and husband Andrew have grown Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine to two stores, in Bath and Portland’s Old Port, and an online store,

The stores help the makers grow by sharing insights on what customers are looking for and giving space to try out new products. The online store gives these makers a platform to sell to customers across the United States. Lisa-Marie and Andy treat all employees—whether blood or not— as family. This was never more evident than in the turbulent climate of 2020, when the company focused on providing stability for their employees and artisans. Lisa-Marie’s kept all its employees on its payroll for the entirety of the pandemic and shifted focus to promoting their online store to ensure their crafters were still being represented.

LUKE’S LOBSTER—PORTLAND The Holden family has been in the Maine lobster industry for three generations. Luke’s father, Jeff was the first licensed lobster processor in Maine. Luke’s is an innovator in the lobster industry. They have removed middlemen, allowing the company to work directly with fishermen on quality and sustainability innovations that bring more value back to the shore, such as bonusing additional dollars to wharves that handle their lobsters in manners that reduce shrink. Luke’s is the first processor/dealer to be a member of a lobster fishermen’s coop, which they helped to found in Tenants Harbor.

The family connections make Luke’s Lobster a better business, as Jeff hands down the knowledge and experience he has gained from a half century in the business to his sons Luke, Bryan, and Jeff. Certifying as a B Corp enshrined the company’s commitment to social and environmental good, contributing to the small family business mindset that helps Luke’s Lobster make responsible decisions that are good for their team and stakeholders. From 2009 to 2019, Luke’s Lobster grew from a single restaurant location with a single employee to 20 restaurants across the U.S., 5 restaurants in Japan, 2 in Singapore, a large seafood processing facility in Saco that supports those restaurants, a branded grocery seafood business distributed across the U.S. and to Singapore, and a robust online market with a diverse range of Maine seafood sold in all 50 states. Pivoting to build the online market during the pandemic helped Luke’s survive and provided yet another channel for growth. Before the pandemic, Luke’s Lobster peaked at 600 employees, 250 of whom were in Maine. Luke’s is rebuilding rapidly and is poised to restart growth to new domestic and international markets.

MAHOOSUC GUIDE SERVICE—NEWRY Polly Mahoney and Kevin Slater have been providing unforgettable four-season outdoor experiences for over 30 years. Based in Maine’s western foothills, they started Mahoosuc Guide Service together in 1990 with 10 sled dogs and decades of combined guiding and teaching experience across the U.S. and Canada. Mahoosuc Guide Service makes their own wood and canvas canoes, paddles, setting poles and dog sleds. They also breed the Yukon huskies they use for dog sledding trips, who all hail from the same family line of dogs tracing back 40 years. While they’ve had as many as 50 dogs, they currently have 25 and have intentionally kept their operation small in order to ensure quality and safety. They are untroubled by the lack of cell service in their area, preferring to have “old fashioned” face-to-face conversations with their guides and guests. Polly and Kevin are committed to helping carry on the tradition of Maine Guides, and are strong advocates for enhancing testing and licensing for Maine Guides, including mandatory first aid courses. Mahoosuc offers an apprenticeship program to prepare the next generation of guides, providing young people opportunities to learn from experienced guides. They also lead many workshops throughout the year to help guides hone their safety and first aid skills for all seasons. In addition to dogsledding and canoeing excursions in Maine, Mahoosuc offers cultural trips including dogsledding in the Arctic, and snowshoeing and canoe trips with Cree and Inuit guides. They are training members of the Penobscot nation to become Maine Guides and learn skills that have been lost in their culture. They also create custom group excursions in Maine, Ouje-Bougoumou, James and Hudson Bays, and Nunavik, Quebec, and host dances and concerts in their lodge twice a year to engage with the local community.

MAINEWORKS—PORTLAND MaineWorks is an innovative staffing company, founded in 2011 by Margo Walsh, with a mission to dignify transitional employment for people in recovery from substance use disorder and reentry from jail and prison. MaineWorks was established to provide meaningful, full time transitional employment for this vulnerable population. The company partners with select businesses who share their values within the industrial construction sector. MaineWorks’ partner nonprofit, Maine Recovery Fund, provides resources and support to help employees reenter the workforce successfully. MaineWorks was the first business in Maine to become a certified B Corp, a national program that measures social and environmental impact. The company has been recognized as “Best for the World” among B Corps, and currently has 60 people working at construction jobs in Maine and has an office in NH with further expansion underway in MA. Margo’s son, Jack Davies, originally got involved in the company in High School when he drove MaineWorks employees to job sites leaving the house at 5:30 before he went to school each morning. Jack returned to the company after earning a finance degree from the University of Denver and, in Margo’s words, “has brought rigor and structure to our operations” in his role as CFO. Jack combines a passion for the mission with in depth business acumen. Margo’s other son, Sam, is also involved in numerous research and administrative projects for the company.

The positive impact of MaineWorks’ efforts is powerful. One recent example was captured in a photo Margo received from two former MaineWorks employees who were hired full-time by a MaineWorks client. “They joined up to send the photo to me to indicate the camaraderie and esprit de corps they experienced at MaineWorks,” says Margo. “Both had a history of substance use disorder and both were formerly homeless, so their success is incredibly sweet for me and the picture was worth a thousand words. Another former MaineWorks employee now runs MaineWorks. We move people to economic viability and personal prosperity.”

THE MONTALVO CORPORATION—GORHAM Range Expansion and Variable Wrap Angle Technology. Earlier in 2021, Montalvo launched its Vanguard Tension Control System, a three-year project funded by the National Science Foundation that will disrupt the composites manufacturing industry by introducing a cost-effective, continuous, automated way for composites manufacturers to control tension in their process. Ed Sr’s children, Margaret “Midge” Denham and Ed Montalvo, Jr., are active in the company as co-managing directors. In addition, Midge is involved in human resources and financial operations and Ed Jr. in sales and marketing efforts. The family element of the business has been instrumental in many ways. One example is the creation of Montalvo’s BLUE Assurance program for customers, which empowers employees to respond to issues quickly without waiting for paperwork before they take action. Montalvo has been a world leader and pioneer in tension control since founder Edwin Montalvo, Sr., who started as a manufacturer’s representative, built his first prototype in his basement workshop in New Jersey. In 1976, Ed moved to Portland and founded the Montalvo Corporation; today the company is headquartered in Gorham with sales offices in Germany, Denmark and China, and customers on six continents. Husband and wife team Jacques and Patricia Rossi Santucci started Opus Consulting in 2009 to fill a need for a strong, and solid management consulting firm, within the local business market. ORIGIN—FARMINGTON Pete Roberts founded Origin in 2011 to bring textile manufacturing back to his hometown of Farmington. Over the past decade, the company has emerged as an example for modern Made-in-the-USA businesses, expanding into lifestyle apparel, workwear, footwear and nutrition products that are garnering a worldwide reputation for exceptional quality. They operate manufacturing facilities in Farmington, Wilton, and Jay, a retail storefront and factory store in Farmington, and an e-commerce website. Origin’s products are also sold wholesale and through online retail partners.

Pete and Amanda’s children have worked part-time while still in school, with their oldest graduating from Mt. Blue and heading to Bentley College for a business degree, with plans to return to help lead Origin. As Origin grew, their return to heritage skills gained attention as an innovative way to revive manufacturing with vertically-integrated process and control over their domestic supply chain. Origin was highlighted as a success story when COVID created a supply chain issue across the country. Their manufacturing uses both older refurbished machines as well as the newest technology in computerized and laser optic systems for patterns and cutting for apparel and footwear/leather goods.

PackGen’s bulk packaging products – proudly manufactured in the State of Maine

In 1985, the Wrangler Company, now known as PackGen, emerged from a Maine-based filtrations company, UF Strainrite, founded by John H. Lapoint, Jr. in 1979. The company’s philosophy then and now, was based on creating value for customers through innovation and service. PackGen was created to meet customers’ need for a cost-effective means of transporting hazardous material for disposal and has evolved to become a prominent supplier to the environmental market for shipping hazardous waste materials. The company builds value by being “different by design” and through establishing long-term relationships with their customers. They strive to deliver superior quality products to their customers, to

continually innovate to meet the needs of the markets they serve, and to uphold all the core principles that have kept the company strong since 1979. Over the years, PackGen products have evolved to handle a broad range of regulated and non-regulated materials. PackGen was the originator of the “pop-up” container concept, advancing the product to meet UN composite packaging standards, and raising the bar for the whole packaging industry. Their latest innovation is a rigid structural panel made from bagasse (sugar cane), which they have incorporated into their unique collapsible rigid tote design for shipping liquids internationally. This is a first and one-of-a-kind design for a $2 billion marketplace and creates the lowest carbon footprint in the market compared to existing technology. Several large global food producers have already committed to millions in purchases for 2022 and 2023. John Lapoint III, son of the founder, has owned PackGen for 25 years and serves as president. His sons are both involved with sales and his mother serves on the board of directors. UF Strainrite, the predecessor to PackGen, still exists today and is led by John’s brother.

SEARSPORT SHORES OCEAN CAMPGROUND—SEARSPORT When Astrig and Steven Tanguay, owners of Searsport Shores Ocean Campground, refer to their visitors as their guests, they really mean it. The campground, which their family has owned since 1993, is the couple’s year-round home. This undoubtedly contributes to the family’s commitment to providing a memorable experience that keeps campers coming back year after year—more than half their campers are repeat visitors.

“When we make it a point to say, ‘Is there anything I can do to make your stay better?’ and take the time to listen to the responses, we create a community that naturally cares for each other. No one is a stranger for long,” says Astrig. “We do not strive to be the largest campground, instead we strive for excellence at a sustainable scale.” The campground has hosted multiple Artist-in-Residence series, built workshop and cooking spaces, integrated marine-based activities, established family-friendly edible and dye gardens throughout the park and instituted weekly fiddle performances and music jams on the outdoor stage. Quickly adopting an anti-viral fogging system in their public bathhouse and rental units allowed them to create an atmosphere of comfort and safety during the 2020 pandemic. Searsport Shores has leveraged social media to draw visitors who traditionally aim for Camden or Bar Harbor, engaging them with events and activities that give them a reason to stay longer in the Searsport area. Consequently, the campground’s guests contribute over $1.5 million annually to the local economy, according to a University of New Hampshire study. SMILING HILL FARM—WESTBROOK Smiling Hill Farm has evolved from selling milk to locals and then large dairy processors to bottling its own milk in reusable glass bottles, sold at the farm and supermarkets throughout Maine and New Hampshire. Smiling Hill Farm yogurt, ice cream and butter are also sold in Maine, with its Silver Moon Creamery cheeses available in several New England locations and shipped across the country. The farm has found creative ways to attract visitors from Maine and across the country, entertaining them while educating them about farming. Rebecca Knight Lilley, co-owner, treasurer and social media manager, says of her late father, Roger, “Dad started agritourism before it was cool!” Over the years, the addition of a barnyard exhibit, a gift shop and the Ice Cream Barn have made Smiling Hill Farm a hit with people of all ages. Smiling Hill Farm, the iconic Westbrook dairy, is the epitome of family-owned business. Twelve generations and counting of the Knight family, dating back to 1720 (a century before Maine became a state!) have kept this enterprise going strong. The farm is now owned by siblings Warren Knight, Marsha Knight, Michael Knight, David Knight and Rebecca Knight Lilley, all of whom have active roles in its operation. Several of their children and grandchildren are also involved in various aspects of the farm.

The Knights have succeeded by seizing opportunities to draw visitors in all four seasons such as Pick-a-Pumpkin wagon rides in the fall, a Cross Country Ski Center in the winter, Easter egg hunts in the spring, and Goat Yoga and Summer Farm Program for children. When the pandemic started, they pivoted to curbside service and created Ice Cream Sandwich and Sundae To-Go kits and ice cream making kits so families could bring home a taste of the farm.

SPRINGWORKS FARM—LISBON At its greenhouses in Lisbon, Springworks raises tilapia that produce natural fertilizer for several varieties of lettuce that, in turn, clean water for the fish habitat. Springworks Farm’s proprietary, closedloop system is environmentally sustainable, using less heat and 95 percent less water than conventional farms. Springworks Farm also benefits the environment and consumers by providing a year-round source of produce that requires fewer transportation miles to deliver. This fresh, local product never contacts soil and is certified organic.

Springworks Farm, founded by Trevor Kenkel in 2014, is a remarkable success story–benefitting not only Northeast consumers but also the environment. Trevor, President, and his sister Sierra, Vice President, oversee company operations, with father David serving on the board. The idea for Springworks Farm started when 12-year-old Trevor discovered run-off from a nearby conventional farm had killed off the fish and frogs he used to catch near his family’s Montana home. This set Trevor on the path to discovering aquaponics and becoming passionate about sustainable organic farming with minimal environmental impact.

Springworks Farm supplies many independent markets and wholesale distributors in Maine, as well as Hannaford and Whole Foods distribution centers in the Northeast. The company has been a particularly close partner with Hannaford since 2017. Beginning with direct delivery to twelve local stores, Springworks Farm is now the exclusive supplier of organic Green Leaf Lettuce to Hannaford stores across the company’s five-state region. Springworks Farm expects to grow its total yield from more than 1 million heads of lettuce per year to two or three times that volume annually. The company also produces more than 60,000 pounds of tilapia for sale as fresh seafood. With its just-completed 40,000-square-foot greenhouse expansion, the company is positioned for significant growth in employment and impact.

THE BLUE ALPACA LLC—BELFAST Located in the heart of midcoast Maine, The Blue Alpaca LLC was established in 2014 by Ben Cowan and Michele Hutchins, a husband-and-wife team, on land purchased from Ben’s family. With lots of help from family and friends - “too long to list,” says Ben—they built two three-sided barns and fenced two pastures for their herd of six alpacas. In 2016, they converted an existing building on the ranch into a small gift shop where they sell a wide array of alpaca products, including yarn, socks, clothing, rugs, and home decor, and even manure. They have since added a year-round retail store in downtown Belfast, participate in several agricultural fairs in Maine and New Hampshire each year, and host kiosks at the Maine Mall and Bangor Mall during the holiday season. Their herd has grown from six to 22 and counting, and sales have steadily and exponentially increased. During the pandemic, the company focused on its online marketing presence to bolster revenue and were able to increase e-commerce sales from 5 percent to 25 percent of total sales for the year. They are on pace to have their best year yet, in terms of sales revenue, in 2021.

Ben and Michele are always looking for new ways to build their business and share their love of these beautiful animals with others. This year, they began offering Alpaca Walks—a 30-minute guided tour to explore the ranch grounds while leading one of their beautiful alpacas—and Alpaca Yoga. They anticipate continuing to offer these and other experience-based services in the future. They also offer alpaca sales, boarding, and breeding options for people who wish to own their own alpacas and experience the “incredible sense of peace” these animals provide, as the company’s website notes.

THE SUNRISEGUIDE—PORTLAND The SunriseGuide has been helping Mainers expand their knowledge of sustainability across a broad spectrum of subject matters— food, health, energy, home and more—while fueling the growth of the green economy in Maine for more than 15 years. Since 2006, the company has expanded from a single publication to three distinct brands and five publications a year with a combined annual readership of over 200,000 that includes Maine residents and visitors alike. The company also produces the successful Green Home + Energy Show, a Home Energy Chats webinar series, three branded Facebook pages and two monthly e-newsletters with a loyal following of over 5,000 subscribers. This expansion across multiple platforms has led to steady growth in revenue over the last decade.

Owner/publisher Heather Chandler says, “We believe business can be a force for positive change. We follow a triple bottom line approach that considers the impact of business decisions on people, profit and the planet.” This includes printing only on FSC-certified, recycled papers, offsetting energy use through Maine Green Power and prioritizing Maine printers. In 2018, they were named Maine’s Womanowned Small Business of the year by the SBA. They also have an active advisory panel, comprised of some of the most respected green home professionals in Maine and the country overseeing our Green & Healthy Maine HOMES title. Family involvement in the business includes Heather’s partner, Daniel, who helps to manage distribution and serves as a sounding board and Heather’s mother, Jayne—now retired—worked on the sales team in the company’s early days.

VOLK PACKAGING—BIDDEFORD launched VolkPack, a new division based in Sanford offering fulfillment services to businesses without warehouse space or staff to pick, pack and ship orders. This service emerged during the pandemic to repackage medical supplies for a customer, and helped the company maintain its record of steady growth during a year that was devastating to many businesses. Incredibly, Volk added workers and kept their facility completely COVID-free throughout 2020.

Volk Packaging is a third-generation business producing corrugated packaging and offering fulfillment services to customers across New England and the Canadian Maritimes. Founded by father and son Benjamin and Kenneth Volk in 1967, the company is now owned and led by Kenneth’s son Derek, who is CEO. Ken, along with Derek’s uncle, Douglas, remain involved as advisors. Derek’s wife, Amy, is Director of Communications and Public Relations and serves on the management team. Volk Packaging has survived and thrived by being unafraid to try new things or offer value-added benefits to customers. They recently

Volk fosters a “work hard, play hard” attitude for its team, sponsoring many company-wide lunches, barbecues, contests, drawings, and celebrations throughout the year. Employees are entrusted and empowered to make decisions in the best interests of the company. Derek learned from his father and grandfather how important it is to hire the best people possible, and then give them the freedom to manage independently. Volk’s customer service is unparalleled. Just one example: Volk once shut down its plant so workers could help sandbag a customer’s facility next to an overflowing river. Volk donates to and supports many, many community programs and organizations every year, typically donating about $100,000 annually. Their generosity extends to countless nonprofits, especially those supporting veterans and youth. They are proud to make and distribute beautifully printed Veterans Boxes, free of charge, so veterans’ homes can respectfully return the personal effects of deceased veterans to their loved ones.

ZACHAU CONSTRUCTION—FREEPORT Zachau Construction was founded by Earle Zachau in 1969. In 1989, after graduating from the University of Maine with a B.S. in accounting and finance, Earle’s son, Jeff, joined the company and has slowly led Zachau’s transition from residential building to one of Southern Maine’s leading construction management companies. Since 1989, company sales have grown exponentially and steadily, and the company’s direct staff has gone from six to 40. There are over 200 workers, including subcontractors, on Zachau job sites daily. 2020 was Zachau’s best year ever, with a major component being their nonprofit work. They also have maintained their record of zero litigation in their 52 year history.

Additionally, Zachau Construction has helped advance the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT)—a solid engineer wood panel that offers design flexibility and low environmental impact—in Maine, incorporating it into three local projects. The company is currently constructing a large multi-family housing project to meet Passive House, the world’s leading standard for energy efficient construction. In addition, Zachau Construction has added solar to their own office. Zachau Construction is passionate about sustainable building, and hopes to continue pushing the construction industry forward.

Spanning three generations, each family member brings a unique set of strengths to the company. Earle is a builder; Jeff, current president, is a business mind with financial and business training; Charlie, Jeff’s son, is an engineer. They are friends and work well together. They can approach problem solving from different angles, respecting, and listening to one another. Zachau Construction has emerged as a leader in sustainable building. They recently completed the Ecology School of Maine, which took on the Living Building Challenge, considered one of the most rigorous green building standards in the world. Zachau also completed Hospice of Southern Maine’s new headquarters in Scarborough, using solar and geothermal systems to supply 100 percent of the building’s energy needs with clean energy.

Standing the Test of Time Grand opening of Day’s Jewelers in Westbrook, Maine. After WWII, Day’s Jewelers opened several stores and grew to a 22 store chain located in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. Circa 1946 Sidney and David Davidson. The brothers founded Day’s Jewelers in 1914 along with their brother Herman and their father Harry. Jeff Corey, Kathy Corey and David Davidson when the Corey’s purchased Day’s Jewelers from the Davidson brothers in 1988.

Their son Joe Corey (right) began working in the stores with his Mom and Dad at age 6. In 2021, Joe was hired as President of Day’s Jewelers. Day’s employees express pride in being selected among Best Places to Work in Maine. The award is presented each year sponsored by Maine Department of Labor and Maine State Chamber of Commerce.
