2005 Zubin Mehta visits the institution and, enchanted by the project, declares that it was “one of the most enriching experiences that he has had recently.” Convinced of the power of music as a tool for social transformation, as well as the excellence of the Baccarelli Institute in managing its activities, Zubin became a patron.

The Baccarelli Institute is a nonprofit organization that offers annually music and art education to 1,000 underprivileged and socially vulnerable children and young people. The Institute’s socio-cultural programs are committed to providing excellence in music and art education, and fostering personal and career development. Located within the Heliópolis community, the Institution offers youngsters the chance to learn from qualified teachers, in individual and group classes, as well orchestra, choir and chamber group practice, aimed at teaching them not only music, but also to become conscientious citizens.

HelIÓPolIs Located in southeastern São Paulo, this slum has a population of over 100,000 people. The neighborhood already ranks as one of the largest slums in the city of São Paulo, and the second largest in Latin America. The community began to grow in the 1970s due to an intense process of urbanization and was formed mostly by migrants from the Northeast. As a consequence of its expansion and engagement of residents in effective social projects, the Heliópolis slum was formally recognized as district by the state government.

HISTORY The Baccarelli Institute was established in 1996, when the conductor Silvio Baccarelli, touched by a big fire in Heliópolis, decided to help local families by offering to teach music lessons for 36 children and teenagers. As there were no facilities in the region, Silvio used his own property, the Baccarelli Auditorium in Vila Mariana, São Paulo, and initially bore the expense of providing the lessons. In 1998, the Institute was approved under federal incentives for culture (Rouanet Act) and, from then on, it was possible to obtain private sponsorship, allowing

the project to grow in size and significance. In 2005, the Institute moved to Heliópolis, where it began operating in a juice factory building. given the magnitude and size of the project, a new place was necessary. In order to accommodate over two thousand students, an architectural plan was drawn up for the school. The construction was conducted in two stages. The first building was constructed in 2009, sponsored by the Pró-Vida organization, and the second was finished in 2011, with funding from Eletrobras.

MISSION To offer a full educational program that transcends the field of music, instilling in underprivileged and socially vulnerable children and young people values such as discipline, respect, creativity, patience, coexistence and sense of collaboration —crucial to the development of every citizen in our society.

VISION To be recognized as an institution of excellence that, through musical education, contributes to the development of a fairer society.

2006 Antônio Ermírio de Moraes (one of the most successful businessmen in Brazil) wrote the play acorda Brasil, inspired by the Baccarelli Institute’s work with the community. The play ran for 3 months and was a box office and critical success.

2008 After inspiring the theme of the samba school Vai-Vai for that year, the musicians of the Baccarelli Institute recorded the samba theme song and were invited to participate in the parade with the school at the São Paulo Sambadrome. After seven winless years, VaiVai won the 2008 São Paulo Carnival and our musicians triumphed on the avenue.

(Musicalização) Created in 2011, the music education program is aimed at children aged between 4 and 6 years of age from the Heliópolis public schools. In these classes, the teachers work with toys, accessories, instruments, music, guiding the pupils to a magical world, full of possibilities, and musically unprecedented. In order to promote the development of motor and mental skills, as well as stimulate creativity and reasoning, the course also uses the Dalcroze Technique —a method that integrates music with body language.

2009 The Baccarelli Institute received a visit from Joshua Bell, who taught a master class and gave lectures to our students.

2010 The Heliópolis Symphonic Orchestra held its first European tour, with shows in England, germany and Holland. The young musicians had the opportunity to play at important venues, like the Philharmonie, at the gasteig cultural center in Munich (germany), St. John’s Smith Square (England), Muziekgebouw (Holland) and the international Beethovenfest (germany).

An indispensable part of the curriculum, the Baccarelli Institute choir offers classes on voice technique, posture, breathing, scenic expression, perception and music theory —required for vocal development. The classes are divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. All groups learn in a pleasant way, with training focused on the development of values for life in society. Singing an assorted repertoire, the choir has performed in many cultural spaces, including the Sala São Paulo, Alfa Theater, Municipal Theater of São Paulo, Morumbi Stadium, Monastery of St. Benedict, Pateo do Collegio and Sé Cathedral.

HelIÓPolIs YoutH orcHestra

(Orquestra Juvenil Heliópolis)

The Heliópolis Youth Orchestra combines the playfulness of its players with the maturity and the knowledge acquired from their teachers and conductor. Created and maintained by the Instituto Baccarelli, the orchestra is committed to the democratization of classical music education —a mission which has led the group to the best concert halls, such as the São Paulo Concert Hall, São Pedro Theater, São Paulo Cultural Center, MASP Auditorium,

among others. Furthermore, they have represented the Institute in notable events, such as the TV Shows Criança Esperança (Child Hope, 2011) and Esquenta (Heat) —both on Rede globo, a Brazilian television network— as well the Third Global Conference on Child Labor, hosted by the Brazilian government, in cooperation with the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Brasilia, and in the presence of President Dilma Rousseff.

HelIÓPolIs sYMPHonY orcHestra (Orquestra Sinfônica Heliópolis)

The Heliópolis Symphony Orchestra is a program developed by the Baccarelli Institute, aimed at promoting orchestra practice and knowledge of symphonic repertoire to advanced students of the Institution. In view of the difficulty of forming this orchestra just with the residents of Heliópolis, tests were opened for music students from the entire country. Today, the orches-

tra is composed of musicians from different Brazilian cities, such as Porto Alegre, Recife and Rio de Janeiro. The conductor from the Israel Philharmonic, Zubin Mehta, became a patron of the Heliópolis Symphony Orchestra after conducting the group, during his visit to Brazil, in 2005. The maestro Isaac Karabtchevsky became the chief conductor of the Heliópolis Symphony

Orchestra and the artistic director of the Baccarelli Institute, in 2011. The Orchestra has accumulated great experiences with guest conductors like Peter gülke, Yutaka Sado and Zubin Mehta, and soloists like Julian Rachlin, Erik Schumann, Leonard Elschenbroich, Arnaldo Cohen, Jean Louis Steuerman, Antonio Meneses and Ricardo Castro. The group has performed in important

concert halls and theatres, such as the São Paulo Concert Hall, Municipal Theater of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Gasteig (germany) and Muziekgebouw (Netherlands). Highlights include concerts in events such as the Beethoven Festival (Bonn, germany), a concert for Pope Benedict XVI, as well as a performance at the festival Rock in Rio, with Mike Patton.

Pedagogical Support

Isaac Karabtchevsky, Brazil’s leading maestro, became the chief conductor of the Heliópolis Symphonic Orchestra and the artistic director of the Baccarelli Institute. Alongside the Youth Orchestra of the Israel Philharmonic (from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music), the orchestra put on concerts in Paulínia, with Zubin Mehta as conductor.

The Baccarelli Instituto has a team of 66 qualified music professionals, including 2 conductors, 34 instrument teachers, 8 instrument teacher assistants, 5 music teachers, 4 choirmasters, 10 pianists, 2 voice trainers as well a stage rehearser. Besides weekly instrument and singing classes, the students have the opportunity to take part in masterclasses. Classes and workshops have already been taught by artists like Julian Rachlin, Joshua Bell, Zubin

Mehta, Marin Alsop, Marcello Giordani, musicians from the Bremen Philharmonic, the Engegård Quartet, and others. All the musicians and singers take part in the choir and/or one of the orchestras, playing in the most important concert halls of São Paulo and others international cities. The performances are educational in nature, and used to evaluate the performance of each student, as well as promote the practice of music by the public.

Building complex Considering the magnitude and dimension of the project, an architectural plan was created for the school, which includes not only a music school but also a theater, to allow the students to study, rehearse and put on concerts. The building site was donated by the City of São Paulo, through COHAB (Companhia de Habitação do Estado – The State Housing Company). The Pró-Vida organization then sponsored the first part of the project in 2009. This buil-

ding covers an area of 2,800 m² and has 29 classrooms, two halls for choir and orchestra rehearsals, a library and a living area. In the second stage (2011), carried out using federal incentives for culture (popularly known as the Rouanet Law) and sponsorship from Eletrobras, the other building was constructed. It includes a large rehearsal room, named in honor of Zubin Mehta—a patron of the Institute—a percussion room with soundproofing,

seven dressing rooms— currently serving as classrooms—and a new floor for the back office. The building was constructed with the best acoustical materials available, with soundproof rooms for music practice. The Institute is still looking for financial resources, in order to build a concert hall, which will seat 600 people. This last phase will occupy 6,000 m², expanding its operations to serve 2,800 students per year.

2012 The Heliópolis Symphonic Orchestra played at the São Paulo Municipal Theater, conducted by Zubin Mehta, with the soloist Julian Rachlin. The violinist offered a master class to students of the Institute.

2015 The play Acorda Brasil, written by Antônio Ermírio de Moraes (one of the most successful businessmen in Brazil) and inspired by the history of the Baccarelli Institute, became a feature-length film—The Violin Teacher (Tudo Que Aprendemos Juntos in Portuguese), directed by Sérgio Machado, produced by Gullane—and put the institution on the screens of international festivals like the Locarno International Film Festival (Switzerland), the 39th International Film Festival of São Paulo, Rio Film Festival 2015, and others.
