The Vow Like many others before me, I migrated to Jakarta for work and to be away from my parents. On leaving, I made a vow to my widowed mother across the sea. The vow was to make wealth and survive in Jakarta for her happiness. That was how I remained motivated and focused on my ambition. However, going on a journey has never been easy. Unfortunate events kept befalling on me. The uncertainty of striking out in Jakarta—also with the pandemic that hits so hard while I’m here—tested my soul and mind, questioned my self-worth and brought back memories of childhood trauma. I almost totally forgot my vow to my mother and started losing hope of surviving to make wealth and fighting for her happiness, if it was not for remembering how important she is in my life. As the rainbow emerges after the rain, slowly but sure, I have picked up myself after securing some small victories. These small victories are what makes life worth living. Any victory, however small, is worth celebrating. They will lead us to bigger victories. “The Vow” is a still-life photography which tries to talk about a personal narrative that straddles reality and imagination. It visualizes my feelings of ambition, loss and the sense of harmony that I gained through small victories. Celebrating these victories has given me the mental strength to keep going and to remember that I am good enough to lead the life I want.
