INTRODUCTION THE FISHERMEN COMMUNITIES The fishermen community is a community filled with people with genuine passion for the sea, they treasure the sea as if it completes them. There is no single moment that the sea does not become part of their lives. They actually communicate with the sea, learn, and listen to its sound. Most of them make it as a source of their income to support their family, that they are willing to go on their boats as early as before the dawn is set. Not only that, their wives and children are also part of the community. The family helps with selling their catches of the day.

05

As decades and centuries passed, environmental awareness and tourism have grown along with the development of fishermen communities. They become essential to each other. The lifestyle and hundred years of remained culture of the fishermen communities actually become a valuable gem for a lot of people nowadays. It is noticable that most of tourists now have more awareness on preserving culture and maintaining good environment, which can be found boldly embraced by the fishermen communities. At the same time, tourism programmes also contributes a big part of the fishermen's economy. Architecture plays a big role in progressing these three elements. Only good architecture can maintain the continuity of the fishermen community, preserving the environment, and securing the tourism ideals. In this journal, relation between architecture and those elements, is further studied. Three jetties in Sepang and one in Muttrah, Oman, were chosen for the analysis.

06

LOCATION TANJUNG SEPAT, SELANGOR Tanjung Sepat is a very wonderful treasure for fishermen's community and seafood lovers. It is located in a semi-urban area in Bagan Lalang, Sepang, Selangor. More accurately, along the brink of Sungai Sepang. Most of the time, Sepang is very wellknown for its airports, which are Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 1 and 2. Not much people are aware of the existence of this fishermen’s village, since it is very least expected that such a welldeveloped area would have this glorious gem.

JETI NELAYAN SEPANG BESAR THE FISHERMEN'S HAVEN

The Place in a Sight Jeti Nelayan Sepang Besar is owned by Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan Sepang, an association for fishermen there. It was one of the development project by Agrotourism Complex. The place was built to help the locals to gain their own income to support their family and ownself. It was great to witness how the locals utilise the whole place is at maximum. What is so special about this place is, it is not only meant for the locals or the fisherman, but also for the visitors from inside and outside of Sepang. It is not very frequent that people come for vacations, and to take photos for the 'gram', since it is not a very touristy place. but it is a nice place to rent a boat with family and friends, across the strait of Malacca, and go fishing the whole day or night.

10

The First Glance

As soon as we arrived, the culture of fishermen was very noticable. There was a small creek, that can be seen directly from the road, full of boats, ranging from normal wooden boats to luxury fibre glass boats. The creek was made by the locals there to ease their work of moving the boats to the land, when they are not using it.

11

From far away, the buildings look very humble and calm. It has no specific architecture style, yet good enough to respond to its function. A concrete signboard is put right at the entrance to greet visitors, and also gives information about the place. Just behind the buildings, there is a very mesmerizing view of Sungai Sepang and its green mangroves all along the river.

12

SPACES & ACTIVITIES The spaces there are build to ease the community there. There are two main spaces, which are a fishermen jetty and a small market. In addition to that, there is a small singlespace building, right next to the jetty, meant for fish sorting and business dealing. Complementing the main spaces, there are small spaces for resting and storing equipments.

13

The Jetty The primary structure there is the jetty used solely by the local fishermen there. Main activity happen here, where the fishermen get on their boat to go to the sea every morning and return with buckets of marine lifes. It also becomes their shades during the rain and resting place in the afternoon.

14

All the fishermen there go out to the sea as early as 5 o’clock in the morning. They went in a group of few people on a boat, in pair, or even alone. They are already so used to it, that darkness is never a challenge for them. The reason why they go out to the sea so early that even the sun is still not coming out, is because that is when the tide is higher, so they can move to the sea easily, and more fish are present. They usually come back to the jetty in the afternoon, with fresh seafoods. However, they said that it is not very rewarding for them to throw out all their sweats and time, since each day they only get two to three fish. Only very rarely they will get more fish than usual. Personally, for them, that is why they do not want their children to continue their culture.

15

/ 25

The Middle Man

As the fishermen return from the sea, all the seafoods they caught are usually sold to the chinese middlemen, which their sorting house is just right in front of the fishermen jetty. There were variety of fish we saw there as we arrived exactly at the time when the fishermen brought the fish up from the sea. There were stingrays, sardines, mackerels, sea bass, groupers, red snappers and a lot more. The middlemen will pay them the market price with negotiation. Thenceforth, the seafoods will be brought to a bigger wet market in Sungai Pelek, where it is more of an urban area there.

16

The Wet Market Not only that, Jeti Nelayan Sepang Besar is also a oneplace-you-can-get-all type. It is very convenient especially for the locals. They do not have to go all the way to Pasar Sungai Pelek, which requires a 10 minutes drive from their house, since there is a small wet market selling vegetables and fish right infront of the fishermen’s jetty. There are three lots opening everyday, which they get the fresh seafood source directly from the jetty.

17

Zoning & Privacy The space arrangement there is very well-thought. it considers privacy and functionality. The public attractions are placed right at the entrance for easy access, which includes the parking area, wet market and dry market. the semi- public and semi-private spaces, which can be accessed only be certain people, are placed quite at the back but somehow still can be seen visually. That includes the fishermen's jetty and the fish sorting place. On the other hand, private spaces are placed at the back or somewhere hard to be accessed by public. It is the place where the fishermen and workers there rest and keep their stuffs and equipments.

18

The private space for resting is mostly covered fully with walls and is hardly seen visually. It becomes a safe place for the fishermen and workers' children to sleep and play when the parents are working.

19

ARCHITECTURE Jeti Nelayan Sepang Besar also showcases a good example of architecture suitable to the climatic and physical features of that area and also typology of the building. A lot of things were studied including the jetty, the spaces, the materials, the construction and also its accessibility.

20

The fishing jetty is designed to withstand the most unfavorable arrangements of loads like imposed, dead, wave and etc. These loading give important factor for a jetty to function smoothly and effectively by not bringing inconvenient to its users. Fishing jetty is structure constructed at the edge of river. It should be safe to use during its serviceability period. Therefore, a proper design should be taken so that it does not bring harm to its users.

21

Adapting to the climate there, most buildings are made to have pitched roof. Only some small building have shed roof. The fishermen jetty is also built on stilts, since it is located right at the edge of the river. It is needed to raised high since the water level changes according to different time in a day. It is built higher than the highest water level, so that the floor will not sink. There is also accesible ramp to the jetty to ease the process moving of stuffs or fish with wheelbarrow or trolley. It is also safer when the fishermen need to carry buckets of fish to the market

Adapting to Climate The main materials used for the buildings are concrete, pvc and timber. Concrete is used as the struture as it is longlasting, and low cost in maintainence. It is also very sturdy and suitable for the climate with strong wind. Exposed to the saltwater content carried by the wind, concrete does not rust like steel, and get rotten like timber. Timber is used as the roof truss and small jetty to get to the boat. Also, the water will drip down betweeen the gaps of the timber strips. Hence, it dries up so much faster. Instead of concrete, that requires more cleaning from time to time, timber is definitely a better choice. Pvc is the best material for the gutter and rainwater downpipe, as steel pipes can easily get rust in this geographic area.

22

Under the roof of the fishermen jetty, we noticed a few architectural elements. First of all, is how it is made with very minimall wall and one side is so much shorter. The structure consists of only columns and beams with roof. There are only walls around the storage area. It really allows maximum cross ventilation, creating a very condusive space. We did not sweat or feeling hot under the roof, despite the weather outside is very hot and sunny. Other than that, the rooof trusses are all exposed, making it easier for maintenance, in case that the roof get flown by strong wind. The jetty also has long overhang, to provide shade from hot sun, and avoid rain from sprinkling or splashing in. We admit that we are very comfortable staying there for along time. There are also benches provided facing the mangroves, making it very calm and becomes the best place to rest. It is very nice for us, as visitors, as we can sit there and witness the culture of fishermen without pressure.

23

The Staircased Jetty Another thing that caught our eyes is the small staircased jetty. We only have seen that type of jetty there. It actually adds up the aesthetic of the place. All the jetties there are made like that to adapt with the high tide and low tide. It is easier for people to get onto the boat, at different time of the da, as the boats get higher or lower according to the tide. We can tell that the water tide there changes drastically in a day or during some months, by seeing the ‘teritip’ or barnacles that stick up at the second highest staircase.

In addition, they put up timber poles, as a safety measure, to hold when going down the staircased jetty. Nevertheless, we still need to be very careful since it is not very easy to go down as the rise is very high. On the other hand, for the fishermen, it is just a piece of cake.

24

THE CULTURE Jeti Nelayan Sepang Besar showcases a very beautiful culture, with lots of nice poeple, from children to senior citizen. The jetty is the home of the fishermen there. We discovered that fishermen there are from different races. Majorities of them are malay and indians, and some are chinese and orang asli (abouriginal people). They are all of very friendly and nice people, as soon as we arrived, they all greeted us, offered us to take pictures with them and the fish, and answered our questions very nicely.

25

PAGE 1 • LE VOYAGE

The Fishermen We interviewed one of the fishermen there, Wak Kadir, which has the longest experience of the job and going to the sea. He is an orang asli there from Kampung Orang Asli Bagan Lalang. He is the oldest fishermen there and has been going to the sea since he was 15 years old, now he is 62 years old. We were informed that there are only around 15 fishermen left in total there since the younger generations are mostly not encouraged to be a fishermen. They prefer their children to study in universities and go for other jobs opportunity. Despite the financial struggle that they face, the fishermen there actually enjoy their job.

26

The Market Workers PAGE FOUR| JOURNEY

Some of the fishermen’s wives work at Pasar Nelayan Sepang Besar right in front of the jetty. There are also other locals selling there, but most of them are blood-related to the fishermen community. Not all the fish that the fishermen caught will be sold to the middlemen. Instead, they sell it at the wet market for the locals who stay at a residential area near the jetty. Some visitors also prefer fresh seafood from the market since it is right from the jetty, and the quality is confirmed.

27

The Children On weekends or during school holidays, the fishermen and the merchants at the wet market will bring their children to the jetty. They will play by themselves and not disturbing their parents doing the work. We also approached them. At first, they were quite shy, but still tried to give their best smile to us. after about half an hour later, we managed to make friends with them. They were so playful and cute. We also observed how they adapt to the jetty. For instance, they sat on the edge and also run up and down the jetty. Sometimes, they just sat on the bench, enjoying the view and the wind, or took a nap in the storage area.

28

Pros The layout plan allows easy circulation and access for the locals users and visitors. Climate is mostly taken into consideration in design. The design allows positive interaction between locals and visitors as the spaces are very clear and comfortable. Ramp is provided for the disabled and to ease the process of moving stuffs.

29

Cons The market is small and cramped that it is less comfortable for the buyers and sellers. Less climate consideration is taken in the design of the dry market, where there is no sufficient openings to allow cross ventilation.

30

JETI SIRIP BIRU GEM FOR ANGLERS AND TOURISTS

THE PLACE Just righ next to the Jeti Nelayan Sepang Besar, seperated by a small creek, there is another jetty but meant mainly for visitors, called Jeti Sirip Biru. It is fully handled and supervised by the locals there. Visitors can come to rent a boat to go fishing either in the bright sunny evening or after midnight, around 2 or 3 a.m., because those are the time when they can get the most fish.

PAGE FOUR| JOURNEY

32

SPACES & ACTIVITIES The layout plan is very well planned and it includes necessary facilities for visitors' comfort, such as surau. Plenty of interesting activities are provided for the visitors there, especially the anglers, such as, boat renting, river cruising, sea survival, mangrove survival, camping, and wild animal feeding. What attracted us the most was the wild animal feeding activity. There are a lots of animals living in the mangrove area, that we can feed. Suprisingly, even the crocodiles.

33

The Services There are also boats owned by Avani Beach Resort for river cruising. They provides special service for their guest, but it is not free. We were so shocked to hear that they ask for RM200 each pax for the river cruising. The one provided at the jetty costs only RM35 per pax. Not only that, from that jetty, they can go to ‘kelong’ or ‘rumah rakit’ which is a floating house located at fish hot spots. They can rent the ‘kelong’ from the owners and stay there for one night or more. It is more of a vacation, but with adventurous hint.

34

Fish Farm On top of that, there is also a fish farm provided. It is owned by the management of Jeti Sirip Biru, for the use of local fishermen there, as a source of side income. Some species of fish are kept alive for breeding, and to be sold at the market or food stalls there. Visitors can also see and experience touching and feeding the fish.

35

Food Court Right next to the main entrance and surau, there is a food court run by the locals there. It eases the visitors and workers there to grab lunch or evening tea. The food provided are mostly seafood dish, as they got supply directly from the jetty. The food stall is one of their main income source. The place is also well-known by the locals there, for its good food and variety of delish to choose from.

PAGE FOUR| JOURNEY

36

The space arrangement there is very well-thought. it considers privacy and functionality. The public attractions are placed very clearly visible from the entrance for easy access, which includes the parking area, the jetty access, the public facilities and dining area. The semi- public and semi-private spaces, which can be accessed only be certain people, are placed quite at the back but somehow still can be seen visually. That includes the equipment retrieving area and the reception counter. On the other hand, private spaces are placed at the back or somewhere hard to be accessed by public, except for the office building. It is the place where the workers there rest and keep their stuffs and equipments.

Privacy & Zoning

37

ARCHITECTURE

From far away, the architecture style is very visible and becomes part of special attraction to the visitors. Mostly made out of timber, the buildings give an impression of vernacular architecture with a little modern twist. The entrance greets the visitors as soon as they enter, with a sneak peek of the whole design approach. The double-storey office building there is very new, and became the first thing people see as they arrive. We can tell that it is designed a lot later than the jetties.

38

The building is raised a bit from the ground. It stands on small concrete stumbs. This is because the building is made mainly out of timber. It is better for the timber to not touch the ground, so that it does not get rotten easily, and the quality can be maintained longer. Timber is a good material to be used near the river, as it is easily cleaned, and has gaps for water dripping. It also provides good thermal comfort during hot days. Other than that, the buildings have pitched roof to adapt with the heavy rainfall in Malaysia.

Adaptation to Climate Besides, there is minimal wall, only at the office and reception room. Both levels have an open hall area each, with no walls at each of the longer side of the building. Good ventilation is very important for a timber building, near the river, since the humidity is very high. Air and wind are needed to dry out the timbers much quickly.

39

The Jetty The structure of the jetty consists of a concrete slab, steel columns and trusses. The steel is coated with thick paint to avoid rusting, as saltwater content in the air quickens the process of rusting. The gutter and rainwater downpipe also use painted steel. Jeti Sirip Biru also has staircased jetty to adapt with the tide. Less wall construction allows good cross ventilation for comfort.

40

Facilities The facilities provided are sufficient and bring a lot of comfort to the visitors. They are also very well-maintained and always cleaned for hygiene purpose. A prayer room is provided at the opposite of the office building, for the use of Muslim visitors and workers there. There are also bench and tables available for resting and waiting. Parking area is also very large and can vacate a lot of cars and motorcycles at one time. The equipment for activities are also provided in good condition to ensure safety of visitors.

41

Pros The architecture style becomes a good attraction for visitors, and gives a very cooling feel even in a hot day. The layout plan allows easy circulation and access for the locals users and visitors. Variety of activities and services provided. Use of timber as the main material displays the culture and also responds to the climate and environment well.

42

Cons The access to the jetty is quite small and cramped that it is less comfortable for the visitors No shaded pathway to food court

43

JETI SEWA BOT MURAH THE HIDDEN TREASURE

FIRST ENCOUNTER Half an hour of searching and multiple times of getting lost finally lead us to this, a very old vernacular jetty, Jeti Sewa Bot Murah. It is located not very far from Jeti Nelayan Sepang Besar, but very secluded inside. The first encounter of anyone from an urban area would be a silent impress. It is just very intimidating that no words could describe it. The old vernacular design, striked by the setting sun, and accompanied by the sound of boats and river, brings a whole new feeling in each individuals. Calm and refreshing.

45

It was very mesmerizing to see the place. It has its own aesthetic to it. The jetty is very different to all other jetties in sepang, it gives the exact feeling of classic fishermen village. There are numbers of small timber houses arranged prallel to each other, and raised on stilts. The skin is made of very thin timber planks. All of them have shed roof, enough to suit the climate. The houses are meant for visitors or workers to rest in for a short time, and also to store the boat and fishing equipments.

What to Expect

46

ACTIVITIES The is only one main activities of people there. There is no fishermen going to the sea from there, only anglers who wish to go rent boats at a cheap price for their hobbies. Boat rental service is very famous since long time ago, where people who want to fill up their time only on weekends, but do not own any boat or do not want to.

PAGE FOUR| JOURNEY

47

/ 25

ARCHITECTURE Walking along the jetty, next to an array of timber houses, under the huge blue faded sky, just soothes anyone who comes. A total view of the river, and green mangroves, with old boat really brings a sense of traditional culture. A single circulation from the parking area to the jetty, really draws people to enjoy the ambience, and appreciate the environment.

48

Special Features The houses are made fully out of timber, so it is much easier to be cleaned, and suitable to the climate, despite not having any electrical supply. The jetty itself is just a simple laying concrete slab and also extended with small staircased jetty but much lesser and shorter than Jeti Nelayan Sepang Besar and Jeti Sirip Biru. The whole place is just slightly raised on stilts since it is right at the brink of river with shallower water. Most part of the jetty is not covered by roof, hence it reveals the most sky which makes the narrow path feels very spacious. Only some part is covered by zinc, to shade the boats that are not frequently used. Some timber poles are put up to ease the fishermen to get on and off the boat, especially when the water gets very shaky.

49

PAGE 1 • LE VOYAGE

Maintanence We also asked the owner of the place, about the service they provide there. He said they only provide boat rental service for people to go fishing, but number of people are getting lesser by years. Due to that, the place is not very well maintained, there are some broken jetties and walls, where it might not be safe for new visitors.

50

PAGE 1 • LE VOYAGE

Facilities The place also provides some facilities for the visitors, such as, prayer room, benches, washrooms and storage room. Thus, it is quite convenient for the workers and visitors there since the place is secluded and people have to travel by transportations to get to nearby facilities.

51

Boat Ride along Sungai Sepang Real life experience actually tops a study only by visual. We asked the owner if he could take us on a boat ride. Seeing us as students who are doing research, he offers to bring us with very cheap fare. We are very lucky to experience a boat riding at the most perfect time, sunset.

52

EGAYOV • 3 EGAP

Mesmerising View Riding a boat along Sungai Sepang itself is so much different from seeing everything from th ground. One could witness the whole truest culture of fishermen in Sepang all along the river. There are numbers of jetties with different services provided, and also 'kelong' or 'rumah rakit', made for people who wish to rent and stay for a night or more for fishing. Overall, the architectural approaches of all jetties are mostly the same or quite similar, vernacular with pitched roof. We found out that staircased jetty is mostly used by most of the jetties there.

53

Overall, it was a very unforgettable memory and experience.

54

Pros Appreciation of environment by using local materials. Less roof design allows celebration of view and ambience. One way circulation creates easy access and leading people to appreciate the space naturally.

55

Cons Not very well-maintained. No variation in activities and attraction make it harder to attract visitors. Narrow path along the jetty makes it difficult for two people to cross at a time.

MUTTRAH FISH MARKET A MODERN ARCHITECTURE

LOCATION Located along the crescent-shaped harbor in Muscat province in Oman, Muttrah district has been one of Oman's key commercial centre since long time ago for its important sea port. It is the largest port in Oman until now and once was the centre of commerce of Arab Saudi. It is well-known as a hub for fishing, shipping and cruise liners. Not only that, it also draws visitors for its beauty. Muttrah Fish Market can be found in the west of the city, in landmark building commanding a chunk of the waterfront on the Corniche at Muttrah.

59

THE PLACE IN A SIGHT Muttrah fish market is a growing tourist destination and a key hub for region's fishing industry. The modern take in architecture gives a new breath in wet market designs. It is designed Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, which is known for their artsy, modernist creations. It was built in 2009, as a plan to replace the original fish market, built in 1960. The market was opened for business in August 2017. The construction of the new building is hoped to become meeting place for the local community and tourists alike. Its aesthetics are inspiration from Muscat’s maritime history as well as the graceful forms of Arabic calligraphy. The market is an appreciation to the fishing traditions and region's trade, for their continuity. Despite the new and dynamic elements, the design showcases respect and integrity of architecture to the scale and traditional context along with highlighting contextual regionalism.

The Muttrah Fish Market was designed to serve as a 'heart' or focal point for the community of Muttrah, at the same time functioning as a hub for Oman's thriving fishing. Here, dealers and homemakers can see for a similar eye-watering arrays of quality seafoods. What's more, truly, they are all fresh. That includes Yellowfin fish, squid, ruler fish, prawns, and the sky is the limit from there. That whiff of the ocean and the salty tang of the catch simply ambush each individual's senses each time they go there.

Here, buyers, locals, expats and tourists converge on 136 selling platforms, 36 cutting platforms, 48 platforms for selling fruit and veg and eight meat and poultry shops. It also has facilities for fish landing, refrigeration, preparation and packaging.

64

Some customers are willing to travel off far places like Al Khoud and Barka on weekends, for its various quality treasures. People keep coming back and that is what makes this place special. Muttrah Fish Market is a great day out where tourists and traders can chat, buy, sell, barter, banter, be themselves and have a good time.

The Jetty The most significant features out of all is the jetty that lies right in front of the market. The fishermen there are among the locals. They go out to sea every single day, before the dawn, and come back again in the afternoon with the freshest fish anyone can imagine. They are one of the most significant community there, and became the identity of Muttrah. Part of the tourism idea, visitors can witness themselves how the fish is brought up from the sea, along with the special culture of fishermen.

68

The Plaza The plaza sometimes gets very busy too, full of local people and fishermen trading their goods. Well, no one can ever resist the freshest catch of the day right brought up from the sea.

69

The Mesmerising View Equally as good as the form beauty, the vista is also on another level. The huge plaza lies in front of the market is the space that connects the visitors to the place and culture. From the plaza, or the 'buffer' space, visitors can witness not only the scenery, but also the fishermen's interraction and the building aesthetics. At a single time, ones can view the calming blue skies, sea and ships, and also the melodious movement of the locals bringing up the marine creatures from the sea. Multi-level vista is also another special feature. The opened rooftop allows visitors to view the 360 degree beauty from a higher level.

70

Fish Sorting As the fishermen return from the sea, the catches are brought to the ground, to be exact the storage or fish sorting place. They will sort the fish to sell at the market or deliver to outside dealers.

71

ARCHITECTURE Blending convention with development, the fish market is intended to thoughtfully join the old and the new. The huge space makes an open gathering space where locals and common visitor from everywhere throughout the world meet under a similar rooftop. The compositional idea is enlivened by the lively characteristics of light and shadow through the state of a twofold outspread divider characterizing the spine of the new fish market. The market is a deceptively simple concrete structure, though it has several standout features. It has lent that unmistakeable feeling of Scandi modernism to house and update the country’s noble fishing tradition.

72

Seen from a far place, one can witness how the curved divider

relates with the outspread state of the corniche and its twofold walled structure seems to continue with the bend of the cove, Staircases positioned along the outer walls help to enhance the relationship between the building and the street, while an opening approximately at the centre invites visitors to enter. Referencing both the previous waterfront and the continuation of the corniche, the fish advertise characterizes the limits of open space, interconnecting the city, the mountains, and the waterfront.

As an architect, you design for the present with an awareness of the past, for a future which is essentially unknown. NORMAN FOSTER

CONCLUSION In a nutshell, it is no doubt that the fishing industry is never left behind and always advancing in architecture and tourism. From the most vernacular to most modern fishing hub, all of the design have very vague concious in preserving culture and environment. Respecting traditional culture and environment in fishermen community actually draws most of the visitors, aside from the services and activities provided. Jetties in Sepang gives a right guide on various activities, functionalities and spatial arrangement, while Muttrah Fish Market brings a new light of modern technical architecture in fishing industry. All of the jetties can be very helpful in designing the project Fishermen Village Visitor's Centre. A lot can be applied from the pros derived, and some cons that can be fixed and improved, that usually people mislook it.
