JOANA MATEUS FERREIRA
ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO | 2014 - 2017
While entering new places, I always imagine how they would be if I had the chance to redesign them, making them more comfortable, lighter or functional. The possibility of transforming spaces and create new atmospheres is the reason why architecture became an option for me. This culminated, in November 2014, in the achievement of my Master’s Degree in Architecture with specialization in Interiors and Building Rehabilitation, by the Architecture Faculty of the University of Lisbon. Simultaneously, I have always had other areas of interest, sought to practice different activities and take part in causes I believe in. The desire to get to know new places and cultures was crucial for me to seek adventures abroad, in a context not only touristic, but also academic, with two student exchange experiences, as well as one of volunteer in Mozambique. In the past few years, through professional practice, I have had the opportunity to learn and develop my skills. Therefore, I am now at a stage of transition, motivated to face new challenges, to put into practice my knowledge and always learn more.

HOLIDAY HOMES
PORTO SANTO ISLAND NEW CONSTRUCTION
WORKING WITH LANDMARK ARCHITECTS
These two identical houses are located in Porto Santo Island, in a rural environment with a strong relation with the sea. The duality between countryside and beach was the inspiration for this project with spaces designed for holiday. The entrance is made through a porch prepared to receive who arrives from the beach with an outdoor shower and a toilet. Inside, the living room, which communicates with the porch’s social area, is the principal space of the houses with the remaining ones organized around it: two suites, the kitchen and the laundry. The interior design is marked by the ceiling structure and the white wooden panels on walls that lead us to a beach atmosphere in a country landscape.

CITY APARTMENTS BARREIRO
REFURBISHMENT WORKING WITH LANDMARK ARCHITECTS
Located in the center of Barreiro, the project for these tow bedroom apartments with 70m2, proposes its total refurbishment, seeking to modernize the space. Thus, the kitchen was opened to the living room with a kitchenette that frames the dining and living area. The bathroom and storage area are concealed thanks to a central wooden module which is at the same time the protagonist of the hall and the element that establishes the transition between social area and bedrooms. This intervention, idealized for a family lifestyle, created two apartments with a simple but very comfortable design.

URBAN AREA OF S.FRANCISCO NEIGHBORHOOD
SERPA
REHABILITATION AND NEW CONSTRUCTION WORKING WITH LANDMARK ARCHITECTS
The intervention in the urban area of S. Francisco neighborhood, in Serpa, includes four fields of action: the rehabilitation of the public space of the neighborhood, the construction of a playground and the consolidation of the market and exhibitions space with a new multipurpose pavilion. The neighborhood of S. Francisco is a poor social housing area with problems of integration in the city life. Therefore, this intervention aims not only improve the quality of life of the residents but also promote their integration by approaching the city center to this peripheral zone that is now presented as a cultural area.

HOTSPOT RENT LISBON
INTERIOR DESIGN WORKING WITH LANDMARK ARCHITECTS
The development of this project is the result of a challenge launched by an itinerant sales business. The purpose of the work was to build a mobile sales stand with support to informatics equipment and storage space within a Volkswagen van. It would also require adequate response to different weather conditions. Therefore, it was composed a module that can be organized inside the van in case of adverse weather conditions, allowing the entrance of customers. When the weather conditions are favorable, it can be extrapolated to the exterior, establishing a more direct connection with the bystanders.

RIVERSIDE SUPPORT CENTER FOR RECRATIONAL ACTIVITIES CONVERSION OF OLD PORT WAREHOUSES LOCATES IN CAIS DO GĂ S - LISBON REHABILITATION AND NEW CONSTRUCTION MASTER THESIS PROJECT
The project seeks to integrate these warehouses in the new riverside front of Lisbon, returning them to the city as a center that provides the support needed to practice sports and cultural activities in the outdoor. The boundary between interior and exterior dissipates in the form and function of the building, with multifunctional spaces where areas dedicated to physical and cultural activities continuously communicate betweem each other and with the surroundings. At the same time, preserving the memory of the pre-existence is achieved through an intervention that is reversible, with a dialogue between old and new construction that is reflected in the image of the whole and in the layout of the interior spaces. Architecture, as a factor of influence in human action, can inspire new ways of appropriation of public space and new behaviors that can contribute for a healthier population and a sustainable city.
