CREATE AN 80/20 LIFESTYLE Everyone has the same 24 hours each day. So why do some people successfully build their dream business doing what they love, while others work jobs they hate and only live their passions on nights and weekends? The answer is time management and a mastery of the 80/20 rule. When economist Vilfredo Pareto realized that 80% of Italy’s income was earned by 20% of the population, he recognized that most things in life are not distributed evenly. The idea that the majority of results comes from a small number of causes quickly became known as the 80/20 rule and can be seen everywhere from gardening to corporate boardrooms: • 20% of the tomato plants in a garden produce 80% of the tomatoes. • 20% of the group members produce 80% of the work. • 20% of the features in an app generate 80% of the usage. • 20% of the customers at a restaurant/bar contribute 80% of the sales. • 20% of the students in a classroom raise their hands 80% of the time. • 20% of the work yields 80% of the profit. © 2008, 2016 Integrative Nutrition, Inc.

The key is to determine what the 80/20 rule is in your life and then apply the principle to ensure you’re focusing your time on the 20% of activities that yield the most results.

1| Determine your passion.

What do you like doing? If you could have any job in the world, what would you do? How does your passion improve the health and happiness of others?

2| Find your 20%.

Make a list of the activities in your daily life. Categorize each one as either a 20% task or an 80% task. • 20% – high-leverage tasks that are the most valuable, produce the greatest momentum toward your goal, and provide the greatest return on investment; only you can complete these tasks. • 80% – tasks that have a false sense of urgency or aren’t pushing you closer to your goal; these tasks can be delegated to others.

Note: Certain activities may shift in importance over time, but the 80/20 rule is only effective if you are honest about the priority of a task at the present moment.

Example: If your dream is to run your own juice bar, your daily activity list might look like this: 20% Tasks

80% Tasks

• Experiment with recipes

• Buy groceries

• Complete IIN coursework

• Do laundry

• Secure investors

• Design website • Post on social media

3| Focus.

Now that you’re clear on the 20% of tasks pushing you toward your goals, take action on these tasks each day. For example, you might experiment with one new juice recipe and set aside an hour for your IIN coursework every night rather than scrolling through Facebook.

By focusing your energy on the things that yield the most results, you will begin to experience momentum toward your goals.
