Attitude Affects Your Health It’s logical that a positive mental attitude improves your health, but new analysis of scientific studies confirm that optimism substantially reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. Emotional vitality is associated with better health outcomes for everyone, even those with chronic illness and disability. Emotional vitality is characterized by enthusiasm, hopefulness, engagement in life, and the ability to face life’s stresses with emotional balance. Feeling joy and looking forward to the next day or week is really a wellness strategy, and having a sense of purpose contributes to feeling young regardless of age. Dr. Laura Kubzansky, professor of social and behavioral sciences at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has studied the health benefits of several forms of psychological well-being. Dr. Kubzansky and her team analyzed data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES) - an ongoing national investigation that includes both personal interviews and medical exams. After 16 years with 6,025 participants it’s clear that a glass half full view, versus half empty, is truly good for health for healthy aging.

A growing body of research indicates that people who say they feel younger than their calendar years tend to feel better and live longer. A British study of 6,500 people with an average age of 65 found that those who said they felt older than their age had a 41% greater risk of dying in the next eight years compared with people who felt younger than their actual age. Another study from the Ohio Longitudinal Study of Aging and Retirement found that men and women who had expressed positive views of aging 23 years earlier had lived an average of 7.5 years longer than those with negative attitudes.

Building a Positive Attitude Focus on what’s most important. Dr. Kubzansky says that with experience, we can winnow out the issues that demand our attention from minor annoyances. At least some of your daily annoyances are insignificant when viewed through the perspective of your entire life’s experiences. Practice mindfulness. Increasing evidence indicates that focusing on the moment and accepting your thoughts and feelings without harsh judgment has a host of psychological benefits, from quelling anxiety to aiding weight loss, and it’s great at keeping you from returning to negative thoughts. Keep a sense of purpose. Whether in your work or in retirement feeling connected and a part of something bigger than you are contributes to emotional vitality.

Like anything practice creates ownership of new skills and talents, and emotional vitality is no different. Whatever the reasons that may make it challenging to be positive the research shows that optimism is a master key to good health, and good health is a big part of long term wellness. With Dr. Kubzansky’s research we can see that positivity is the gift that keeps on giving.
