Specifications directly from the Manufacturers
We have made every effort to contact the primary manufacturers of grooming and snow making equipment so that there is equal opportunity inside Snow Grooming Magazine. Not all were able to participate but please call them directly to get their specifications. It’s important you have all the right information before making your buying decisions.
All the specifications inside this issue are directly chosen by the manufacturer for you. Each of the companies that are featured have made these choices based on the criteria as set out in the top left corner of each comparison page.

Giving Mother Nature A Hand DRIFT increases your snow production quickly and effectively By Jessica Antony

SNOW GROOMING | Issue 4 | snowgroomingmag.com
We really help in those marginal conditions, which could be early in the season when you’re trying to get things started, or when there’s a thaw and spike in temperature and you need to get things covered.
I
n order to create that perfect skiing experience, first you need the perfect downfall of snow. While Mother Nature is usually the number one option, sometimes there are situations where high temperatures and unseasonably warm winters call for machine-made snow. Aquatrols can make this process more efficient with their product, DRIFT, by allowing the water that’s used to produce snow freeze more rapidly, which means that you’ll have more snow faster and with less energy used to produce it. A winwin situation when your goal is to get out on the slopes! So how does the product work?
When you get down to it, it’s really quite simple. You add DRIFT to your snowmaking water, which decreases the attraction between the water molecules, resulting in more surface area and a quicker freeze. “DRIFT is a liquid chemical and it’s called a surfactant,” Andy Moore, Aquatrols’ Director of Sales, explains. “When DRIFT is injected into the snowmaking water, it lowers the tension of the water. So as the water comes out of the snowmaking nozzles, those drops of water don’t stick together as tightly — they spread out and flatten out as they go through the plume — and this allows that drop of water to freeze more rapidly because
there’s more surface area. As well, the energy holding the water molecules together is lessened by the DRIFT and so it can convert from water to ice much more rapidly.” What you get then is not only a quicker freezing process and thus faster snow production, but as well, Moore explains that you will end up with “a dryer snow and a higherquality snow, under a given set of conditions.” There are a lot of additives on the market to enhance your snowmaking process and production, but the difference in using DRIFT is the sheer speed with which snow is produced and thus can be moved around the hill. “We hear

How DRIFT works Untreated, high-tension water drops coming out of the snow gun move through the plume and join together to create large drops which don’t freeze thoroughly, causing a wetter snow pile that needs to leach and is difficult to push.
this from groomers themselves,” Moore notes, “when those piles of snow have been made with DRIFT they can get on them faster because the snow is dryer, they can push them out faster, they don’t have to leave them to leech and dry longer. With DRIFT they can get to
DRIFT, however, is entirely safe to use — both for the natural environment and for those who are handling it. them quickly and also their tillers don’t get bogged down with wet snow. That increases the whole productivity of the process of blowing snow and pushing it across the trail.” A quick, dry snow is the ideal result and DRIFT can deliver. DRIFT has been on the market since 2000, and is produced in New Jersey, where Aquatrols has been based since 1955. A family business – Moore’s father started the company, which also employs his two sisters – Aquatrols began as a surfactant-based company, using water to enhance the processes involved in a variety of industries, such as agriculture, turf maintenance and horticulture. DRIFT is used on mountains all over Canada and the United
14
States, as well as in Europe and Korea. The idea behind DRIFT was born out of the natural progression of the company’s work in water-based products. Moore explains, “We had some folks in our R&D department who had been involved in snowmaking in the Poconos in Pennsylvania begin thinking about how some of these processes can influence snowmaking. After doing some trial work up there we looked at a variety of different surfactants and decided that the chemistry we use in DRIFT is the best one.” After working with a consultant in New England specifically around snow making equipment and their processes, they were able to develop what they have today. Any additive to your snowmaking process raises the question of potential environmental effects. DRIFT, how-
ever, is entirely safe to use — both for the natural environment and for those who are handling it. “It’s used at very low rates,” Moore explains, “which are well below any rates considered harmful to workers or skiiers. The DRIFT product itself is actually broken down by water and breaks down fairly rapidly, so come spring time with the melt, the DRIFT will break down and will not contaminate rivers and streams and reservoirs.” And, as you only require three gallons of DRIFT per million gallons of snowmaking water, the product is not only environmentally friendly, but also economically friendly. Moore makes this clear: “One of the ways we stand apart is that DRIFT is very easy to handle and doesn’t require any special storage. You don’t need to use the product up all at once, you can easily
DRIFT lowers the tension of water and allows each drop to flatten out as the drop moves through the plume. The flatter drop freezes more quickly and thoroughly providing a drier, higher quality snow.
SNOW GROOMING | Issue 4 | snowgroomingmag.com
DRIFT-treated water coming out of the snow gun is flatter because they are of lower tension, which freeze more thoroughly in the plume, creating a drier pile that can be pushed and groomed more quickly and easily.
store it and it doesn’t require any special handling, which some other products require. It’s very easy to work with and it’s very economical to help with snow surfaces management.”
You will end up with a dryer snow and a higher-quality snow. The key difference between DRIFT and the variety of snowmaking additives on the market comes down to their approach. Other additives actually add particles to the water that the
– rks ue a P Tube Reven New ator! e h T er Gen
water then freezes around — as water actually needs a particle to start and enhance the freezing process, which is referred to as nucleation. DRIFT, however, “actually changes the tension and energy in the water to allow it to freeze more rapidly,” Moore explains, “because in most cases the water that’s used for snowmaking is coming from a pond or stream that has a fair amount of particles in it already, so we’re just helping to speed up the process. We end up with a dryer snow than a snow that’s made with a nucleation product.” The situations in which you see the most benefit from using a product like
DRIFT to increase snow production is generally at those higher temperatures and less than ideal conditions — exactly when you really need the extra help! “We really help in those marginal conditions, which could be early in the season when you’re trying to get things started, or when there’s a thaw and spike in temperature and you need to get things covered.” In order to produce snow for those areas that Mother Nature doesn’t reach in an efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective way, DRIFT can be your savior on the slopes. ❃

M
oving equipment from one job site or location to the next is not always easy, especially when it comes to the heavy, large-scale equipment used in snow grooming. Not only do you have broker fees and customs paperwork to contend with, but the price tag can be extraordinary. The entire process can be time consuming, costly and sometimes confusing. This is where uShip steps in. With their online price quoting and carrier comparisons, you’re given the peace of mind of knowing that they will provide the safest and most secure means of shipping your groomer, tractor, sled or other grooming equipment. Due to the massive size and weight of grooming equipment, shipping it requires special considerations, such as a specialized hauler with the experience
20
and qualifications necessary to transport your equipment. Philip Strohl, Vice President for Business Development at uShip, explains that there are a number of potential barriers or roadblocks to shipping heavy machinery: “You need to know who has the right equipment to do it, if it’s oversized or overweight, you need to make sure you are dealing with carriers who have the equipment and who can get the permits if you need them and basically ensure that it’s legal and compliant all the way along the route.” While navigating the terrain of heavy equipment shipping may seem daunting, uShip can help. Their platform saves you time and money by connecting you with transport companies. You simply post the item you need shipped on uShip.com and transport providers — ranging from indepen-

dent truckers to large-scale freight carriers — then place competing bids to win your business. You can then evaluate each carrier’s bid price, delivery timeline, feedback score and customer reviews and choose a winning bidder for your shipment. “We’re much like eBay in this way,” explains Dean Jutilla, uShip’s Director of Marketing Communications. “We also offer more instant rate quotes, versus the auction bidding approach, in many of our categories so shippers and transporters can more quickly conduct business.” All of those complications surrounding carriers’ experience, equipment and permits are facilitated by uShip’s platform, Strohl explains, “by allowing the user to post the specs of the item itself and communicate directly with the carrier through the platform.”
“uShip can facilitate the complicated process of shipping your grooming equipment”
You post your shipment, which only takes a few minutes, and then you will start receiving quotes within hours. Some key elements to keep in mind when shipping large equipment include making sure your carrier has the experience necessary to get the job done. “You want to make sure you find someone who’s handled this type of or similar equipment before,” Strohl said. “From a platform approach that’s where we use feedback and transaction history of all the previous shipments that have been done on the platform.” Shipping across borders can prove to be a bit more complicated, but uShip can also help to alleviate that strain as well, as they’ve dealt with a multitude of shipments and shipping experiences. “We have customers who are shipping across borders who have their own experience and come to the table with a shipping broker who can handle the paperwork for them, or customers can source a carrier or broker who can
assist them with that for that particular shipment,” Strohl explained. “We also see a lot of shippers who choose to ship to the border and then come and collect it on their own at the border.” Whether you’ve got the experience or not, uShip can help facilitate getting that grooming equipment to its destination. It’s not just heavy machinery that uShip has handled — they’ve facilitated the shipment of almost anything you can imagine. “uShip facilitates the transport of anything larger than a parcel,” Strohl said, “so we cover anything from cars, to boats, motorcycles, furniture and appliances, to construction equipment like dozers, cranes and excavators and anything and everything in between.” With that kind of vast experience, you can guarantee that for whatever you need shipped, they’ve
dealt with. “The platform serves a variety of items and specialty transporter options across categories.” The key benefit to using uShip’s platform versus making shipping arrangements on your own is accountability. “You will get a lot of transparency on who the service provider is and what their quality of service is,” Strohl explains. “Because it’s a transactional platform you will get feedback ratings and transactional histories of all the carriers on the platform, so you’re able to make a really informed decision not just on price, but also on service quality.” With the platform’s structure of providing you with competing bids from carriers, “you will be able to quickly and easily compare half a dozen to a dozen quotes on pricing for that shipment to make an informed decision

21
and understand what the market is,” Strohl notes. This can save you a lot of money in the long run: “Through the competitive quoting process customers are able to save 30% or more versus a full retail rate card quote because
22
you’ve got carriers who are competing and some using it to fill excess capacity, so we can pass those savings along to the customer.” On top of being a more cost-efficient means of shipping equipment, uShip

also saves you a great deal of time. “You post your shipment, which only takes a few minutes, and then you will start receiving quotes within hours, and multiple quotes over 24 to 48 hours to make your decision, without having

keep you and your shipment anonymous until you choose a carrier, uShip can help make the formidable process of shipping grooming equipment a breeze. “What makes uShip unique is that we can serve all different types of freight and shipments. We can handle the really bulky, difficult-to-move
stuff, we can handle palletized freight and smaller pieces, and anything that’s not going to be sent as a parcel can be moved through the platform,” Strohl notes. “It’s a fast, easy, no-obligation way to source quotes and compare carriers.” ❃

Honouring Those Who Groom Our Trails The International Snowmobile Hall of Fame’s Groomer of the Year Award seeks to bolster the sport of snowmobiling By Jessica Antony
T
he International Snowmobile Hall of Fame (ISHOF) has been awarding the Groomer of the Year Award since 2000 to those groomers who go above and beyond in the development, maintenance and awareness of trails across North America. Les Pinz, a board member of the ISHOF for the past five years and recipient of the Groomer of the Year Award in 2011, notes that these awards are necessary to keep the industry and the sport alive and well. Without the hard work of the groomers, there would be no trails to ride or ski. The ISHOF was founded by Elmer Cone in northern Minnesota in 1986

to recognize the vast number of volunteers who devote their time to protecting and maintaining the sport of snowmobiling. The board of the ISHOF consists of 13 members who have either been previously inducted into the Hall of Fame or who have a vested interest in snowmobiling. The Groomer of the Year Award began as an extension of their efforts to keep the sport alive and well. “Elmer Cone, the Cone family and all the board members of the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame have created and sustained the Hall since its inception. We are pledged to continue its service to the snowmobile industry and sport by recognizing and honor-

ing those who have made the sport of snowmobiling winter’s premier recreation,” states Scott Eilertson, President of the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame. A club or individual can nominate a groomer for the award by submitting a letter of nomination online to the ISHOF (www.ishof.com). Once the application is submitted, the ISHOF board members review the nominations to determine what each individual’s qualifications are and what they’ve done to promote and maintain the sport of snowmobiling. The board is looking to “honour a groomer for what they’ve done,” Les Pinz said, so it’s

“ We are involved in promoting and advancing the safety education of the sport of snowmobiling and we have established a museum to honour the people who have worked hard on the trail system, through legislation and through manufacturers.” Pinz was nominated to be a member of the Hall of Fame in 2011 after over 46 years of snowmobile experience and enthusiasm. After getting his start in 1964, Pinz’ family opened a snowmobile dealership, selling Polaris and Scorpion. From 1966 through 1976 Les raced both Polaris and Scorpion, winning high point honors several years and a World Series Class Championship in 1971. He has been a local club

In the end, the key to the longevity of snowmobiling is youth engagement, Pinz said. “The average person in a snowmobile club is 55-60 years old or older. People may claim they don’t have the time, but when we built these trails back 45 or 50 years ago we didn’t have time either, but we made time because this is our passion.” ❃

Red Giant Oils
Talks Equipment Fluids Let them help you ensure you’re getting the best for your equipment By Jessica Antony
W
hen you’re up on the mountain grooming slopes in extreme weather conditions, the last thing you want to worry about is whether or not your groomer is well protected against those elements. Red Giant Oil Company has been selling specially blended oil products for over 100 years, and has the vast experience and industry longevity to ensure that you are confident that your equipment is ready to face all of the challenges of snow grooming. Incorporated in 1946, Red Giant Oil Company had already been selling oil and related products to the farming
industry in the Midwest United States for 36 years. After changing its name to Red Giant Oil Company from the previous E-Z Manufacturing Company, in 1964 the company purchased Searle Petroleum Company, a lubrication business that had been in operation since 1889. Needless to say, Red Giant Oil has been in the oil and lubrication business for more than a lifetime! Currently owned and operated by Sherryl G. Bills-Taylor, one of the original owners’ granddaughters, Red Giant Oil has kept its operations in the family for many years. “Red Giant Oil is a company that’s been around a long
time, it’s a family-oriented company that still has the family values and leadership within the company,” explains Jay Nenneman, the company’s North American Fleet Manager. “It’s a fine company and one that I’m very proud to be a part of.” Having grown immensely over the years, Red Giant Oil is now the largest supplier of railroad engine oil across North America. “Virtually all of your large railroads are using Red Giant Oil and there’s a reason for that,” said Nenneman. “It’s because we are very careful about making sure that we are only delivering the highest quality product
“ The strength of our company lies in the fact that we work directly with the companies that we supply to.”

43
for our customers, and we’ve been doing that for the railroad industry for many years, and you will be getting that high caliber of oil for your equipment.” Snow groomers know that extreme weather fluctuations are a part of the business of grooming, and it is of utmost importance that the best oil and lubrication is available to protect your groomer under those conditions. Nenneman explains that Red Giant Oil is committed to providing a high-caliber blend that will ensure a smooth grooming season. And because Red Giant Oil does not sell through distributors, but rather direct to the people who need their products, they are able to work closely with groomers to ensure their equipment needs are being met. “The strength of our company lies in the fact that we work directly with the companies that we supply to,” Nenneman explains. “We are blending the oil specifically for you and your equipment and for your specific needs with that equipment, rather than working through someone else where you never really know what you’re getting.” There’s a lot more to understanding
44
your oil and fluid needs than meets the eye. Nenneman explains the basics for a good quality hydraulic fluid: “Everything starting with a base stock, and in order to make a hydraulic fluid you start with what’s called a light stock. Then you add the parts and pieces to make it work however you want: a viscosity improver, which makes it thicker and clingier; seal swole inhibitors, which are typically going to be some type of a material like a polymer or synthetic that has a solvent to give it the ability to penetrate plastics and rubbers and make them more supple and pliable; and finally you also have ash or zinc, which are your anti-wear package. At that point it’s a matter of tweaking those materials depending on what you want to do. If you need something for a low-RPM, high-heat application then generally what we’ll do is enhance the extreme pressure part of the formulation to meet that criteria, because the oil in that atmosphere is not turning over fast, so it needs to be able to cling and coat and have a high level of anti-foam.” Not only do they have the years of experience and knowledge under their belts to be able to provide you with the specific blend for your application, but
SNOW GROOMING | Issue 4 | snowgroomingmag.com
they know what they’re providing you because Red Giant Oil does the testing themselves. Nenneman explains that while some companies claim that you can use their oils up to 15,000 miles, for example, they actually test the TBN – or total base number – on their own fleet of trucks to be absolutely sure of the mileage you can expect out of their oils. The TBN of a standard 15w-40 is generally about 9 or 10, and you know that once that number depletes by fifty percent, the sulfuric acid has built up in the oil to the point where it matches the additive package, meaning it is no longer effective and needs to be replaced. “What we do,” Nenneman explains, “is we take our truck fleet and
The specialty blend that Red Giant Oil has found works the best in snow grooming applications is a 5W30 multi-viscosity trans-hydraulic fluid. we test it. I know the total base number of my oil is 10, brand new. So at 5,000 miles I’ll pull a sample and just test the TBN and continue to test it until that TBN gets down to 5, and at 5 I know that I’ve gotten all the life I can get out of that oil and by looking at the odometer I can determine how long I can run with this oil.” It’s by actually talking to groomers themselves that Nenneman and Red Giant Oil can provide the specialty oils
necessary for grooming equipment. “I talk to the guys who operate and work on the equipment and get them to tell me what the pain points are. And generally the pain points will tell the tale. If they’re coming in at 5:00pm and have to wait 45 minutes for their equipment to warm up before it will even move, that tells me a few things: the oil is probably too thick and probably not the right base structure, and at that point I’ll ask what make of equipment it is, and based on that, I know what the manufacturers recommendations are and determine what we can do to make it work better so that it warms up quicker, lasts longer and doesn’t leak.” A lot of the time, the problem Nenneman runs into in the snow grooming industry is the misuse of ATF – or automatic transmission fluids – in grooming equipment. The problem is that by using those lighter ATFs, you’re essentially putting car fluid into heavy equipment, which will eventually damage the equipment. What you need is a special blend that is designed specifically for your equipment and needs. You just need to know to ask your dealer for something made specially for your equipment. Nenneman explains why ATF is not the best choice for grooming equipment: “If you get something that’s not designed for a specific application, it’s lacking somewhere, and usually what it’s lacking in is seal conditioner, which is the additive that goes into these oils that can saturate neoprene, Teflon and rubber and make it swell and become more supple and pliable, while eliminating leakage. ATF does not have a lot of that in it because it has to be very thin so that it can dissipate heat very quickly because it’s designed to be in a different type of machinery altogether.” Nenneman explains that hydraulic fluids are measured on an international scale — an ISO number — starting from the lightest at ISO22 and then going up from there to 32, 46, 68, 100, 150, 220, 320, 460 and 680. “ATF is generally somewhere around an ISO32, so it’s as thick at startup in the winter as it is at startup in the summer. So when a machine has to warm up for 45 minutes before it will move, that’s because that oil has to get hot in order for it to start
the flow, and as it gets hot it actually decreases in viscosity a bit.” The key, then, is to use a multi-viscosity hydrau-

And as it warms up, the oil actually thickens up until it equals what ATF is right out of the bottle. So the hotter it gets the thicker it gets until it tops out at a 30 weight, and then it will offer way more protection through the warm-up zone and it’s not going to
foam.” The specialty blend that Red Giant Oil has found works the best in snow grooming applications is a 5W30 multiviscosity trans-hydraulic fluid. “We’ve got the ability, with this product, to run snow grooming equipment up in Canada in the worst part of winter or we could put it into a cotton picker in Alabama in the heat of August, and it will perform beautifully.” It’s clear, Red Giant Oil isn’t interested in simply collecting customers, but rather in building relationships and educating people. Their focus is “on the product and our customers,” Nenneman said. “It’s a matter of making sure that you’re gaining a business partner and not just a supplier. We’re genuinely interested in becoming a partner with our customer — if there are any quality issues we’re very interested and involved in helping the customer resolve those issues. And that could mean working with our engineering group or quality group, or getting our labs involved to do testing, or reverse engineering to find out what’s going on in their situation, our goal is to help them be better, and I think we’re pretty good at it.” They want to explain to each customer exactly what they’re getting, so that they have the knowledge they need to understand their equipment’s oil and fluid needs. “Our sales pitch is not a sales pitch but a total educa-

tion process. It’s showing people why they’re buying what they’re buying and then proving to them what it will actually do. And if it doesn’t perform how they think it should, we’ll enhance the formula so that it will do what they want it to do,” Nenneman said. Having been in the industry for over 100 years, you can bet they’re good at what they do! Working with railroads, manufacturing, agriculture and construction, “wherever you need the best lubrication, Red Giant Oil will be there.” They provide everything from motor
oils, to hydraulic oils, fire resistant oils, solvents, gear oils, compressor fluids and residual fuels. Whether you need a quart bottle or a 330-gallon tote, Red Giant Oil can deliver. They have their own fleet of tractors and tank trailers designated specifically for either new or used oil transactions. By making sure that various oils and fluids aren’t co-mingled during transportation, Red Giant Oil ensures product integrity. Not only is Red Giant Oil committed to ensuring the protection of your equipment, but of the environment as
well — they provide disposal services for their customers to be sure that oil is being disposed of properly, a service they’ve been offering for over 40 years. “We pride ourselves on our vendor management systems and we will pick up oil, rags and filters and provide a certificate of destruction to show that the facility is a green facility.” With their own transportation division they handle used oil reclamation, which is processed and offered as residual fuel for asphalt companies and industrial plants and also as feed stock for re-refining. At the end of the day, Red Giant Oil is committed to helping their customers on a personalized basis, providing the best product for each individual need with the expertise and experience of the generations before them. Nenneman explains, “You’re not buying oil off a shelf or from a manual, we’re going to come in and figure out what the best product is for you and take care of you.” That level of care and attention is what will give you the peace of mind that your equipment is protected while you’re out on the trails or slopes. ❃
