'Happiness'- such a simple word, yet so profound! In most of my interactions with parents and professionals, one invariable question that I face from the audience is- ‘How do you define happiness? People have agonized over this question for centuries. So,in a role reversal of sorts, let me ask you this─ What is it that makes you happy? Is it the care that a colleague shows towards you? Or, the warmth from fellow residents? Or, an empowering conversation with your better half? A little deeper introspection will surely reveal the power of togetherness or, to say, happiness in togetherness. Say to yourself, I choose happiness for myself and feel it, I commit happiness to others and ensure it. It fills me with immense pride to share that iNTELLYJELLY has collaborated with the Delhi Government for their Happiness Curriculum' that was launched by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. 10 lakh+ students and around 50,000 teachers are set to benefit through this new curriculum. Prithvi, the best skater in school, was selected to represent his school in the inter-school skating competition. He was very excited, but also knew that another school had a national level skater, Anant.

The True champion

‘I can not beat him, he is the fastest,’ he always thought. Then, one day, his coach told him about Anant’s accident where he had twisted his ankle and would not be able to compete. ‘Hurray!’ Now, Prithvi was DPOGJEFOU of his gold and took his place in the starting line-up. He whooshed off from the start, way ahead of the rest. But just as he was making his last turn, he stumbled on a stray pebble and fell down. He quickly got up and raced to the finish line, but, alas, he could only manage to win the bronze medal. Prithvi was very sad. He thought it had been his one chance to win the gold medal. His coach and his mother sat down with him. 'Prithvi,' they said, 'it was an accident. It was not your fault.' 'But it was my one chance to win a gold medal,' said Prithvi. 'Son,' said his coach, 'at times, in life, small things, like a pebble, can make us fall down. But, Sep 2018

what is really important is that we get up again and complete the race. Even after falling down, you completed the race and came third. This is what makes you a true champion.' Just then, Anant came up to him and said, 'Prithvi, you raced like a champion today. Would you like to be my friend? We could skate together.' Prithvi was delighted. Anant and he are now best friends and practice together regularly. Next time, Prithvi will be racing for gold with Anant in the race too. That is the mark of a true ]b[gjcih. THE CROCODILE WITH WINGS A long time ago, there lived, on the bank of River Nile, a happy bunch of crocodiles. On the other side of the river, lived another crocodile called Peeny. The other crocodiles did not like Peeny much. Each time they decided to swim across and visit him, Peeny would run and hide in the bushes. They did not understand why he did that. This was turning out to be a big mystery. The real reason why Peeny avoided all the other crocodiles was very different. You see, Peeny was a little different from the other crocodiles. Peeny had wings! One hot, summer day, Peeny suddenly noticed a few pixies running towards him. As was expected of him, he got up and started to run and hide.

‘Wait! You silly crocodile,’ cried the eldest pixie. ‘We have come to help you.’ Peeny stopped! Then, the second pixie climbed on to Peeny’s back and whispered in his ear, ‘We pixies know a fairy called Dewdrop. She knows your story and she would like to help you.’ ‘That’s very kind of Dewdrop! But how?’ he asked. The pixies replied, ‘We will go back to Dewdrop and ask her. We will return with the answer tomorrow.’ The next morning, Peeny was very excited and gobbled down his breakfast as fast as he could. Suddenly, the pixies seemed to appear from nowhere. There were so many of them! One of them told Peeny that

Sep 2018

Dewdrop knew of a land where all the crocodiles were just like him. They all had wings! In fact, Dewdrop had also met Peeny’s family there and had said that they were eagerly waiting to meet him. Elated Peeny said, ‘Friends, where can I meet Dewdrop?’ The pixies replied, ‘Dewdrop will be waiting to meet you at her palace.’ They told him to pack his suitcase and reach the palace by 6.30 a.m. the next day. That night, Peeny packed his suitcase and also packed his favourite book, ‘Cinders, Red and Gold’, written by his favourite author, Ratna Manucha. Peeny woke up very early the next day. He got ready, picked up his suitcase and off he went. He did not stop till he reached Dewdrop’s palace. Dewdrop was having her breakfast when Peeny knocked at her door. She greeted him kindly and offered him some soup and toast. Peeny was very hungry after the long and exhaustive journey, and ate up a lot of toasts. In between his meal, he asked Dewdrop if she happened to know how he got separated from his parents. She told him that his family lived on a large, sandy bank near the source of the river Nile. As a baby, Peeny loved to play in the river. One day, as he was playing, a strong current carried him downstream, far, far away from his home. After floating downstream for many days, he drifted to the bank where he was now living. Having finished the meal, Dewdrop was now ready

24

to start the journey. Dewdrop and Peeny sat in Dewdrop’s carriage. It was a long journey indeed. After travelling for miles, Peeny finally reached home. He saw that all the crocodiles there really had wings, just like him! Dewdrop introduced him to his family. They were happy to see Peeny after such a long time. 'I must leave now. My work here is done,' said Dewdrop. Peeny thanked herr wholeheartedly. Peeny was with his parents at last. Peeny and his crocodile family lived d happily in their sandy home.

AT UNCLE JEFF’S LABORATORY... IS THAT BAD?

UNCLE JEFF, WHAT DOES climate change mean?

OH, YES! EVERYTHING becomes UNBALANCED.

It means that the world overall is getting hotter. 'Global Warming'.

REALLY!!!! IT’S TERRIBLE! EVERY year, the winters are getting colder, the summers warmer, and the rains scantier. Things are worsening every year.

Sep 2018

YES.

EARTH HAS A LONG HISTORY- MORE THAN 4 THOUSAND MILLION YEARS.

Has this ever happened before?

YES, IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE; MORE THAN ONCE.

BUT THINGS GOT INTERESTING WHEN THE FIRST ANIMAL APPEARED ABOUT 600 MILLION YEARS AGO.

THEN, THERE WAS A DRAMATIC CHANGE IN EARTH’S CLIMATE, AND ALMOST ALL THE PLANT AND ANIMAL SPECIES IN THE WORLD DISAPPEARED. SCIENTISTS CALL THIS A MASS EXTINCTION. REALLY! AND HOW D0 WE KNOW IT HAPPENED?

Sep 2018

39

WE KNOW IT BECAUSE OF THE CLUES THEY LEFT BEHIND, BURIED IN EARTH’S ROCKS.

BUT WHY DID THE MASS EXTINCTION HAPPEN?

ARE THESE EVENTS ENOUGH TO CAUSE MASS EXTINCTION?

UNLIKELY. HOWEVER, THEY COULD HAVE STARTED A CHAIN OF EVENTS THAT LED TO BIG CHANGES IN THE WORLD’S CLIMATE.

WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?

ABOUT 250 MILLION YEARS AGO. IT THEN TOOK MORE THAN 20 MILLION YEARS FOR EARTH TO RECOVER.

40

Sep 2018

Some may HAVE BEEN SET OFF BY MASSIVE COLLISIONS between the Earth and the meteors, and some may have been a result of huge VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS.

20 MILLION YEARS!

YES. GRADUALLY, NEW SPECIES APPEARED. AMONG THEM WERE THE FIRST TINY MAMMALS AND THE FIRST DINOSAURS.

WERE THEY ALSO WIPED OUT?

THERE WERE A FEW MORE MASS EXTINCTIONS THAT HAPPENED IN BETWEEN. ABOUT 65 MILLION YEARS AGO, THERE WAS ANOTHER MASS EXTINCTION. THREE QUARTERS OF THE WORLD’S PLANT AND ANIMAL SPECIES WERE WIPED OUT, AND ALL OF THE DINOSAURS WENT WITH THEM.

If it can happen to dinosaurs, it can happen to us too.

food for thought, kids!
