What’s the name of storage device that can store data safely even though it is run over a car in a hot desert? It’s SSD. SSD stands for ‘Solid State Drive’ which can store program and data in computer. So, people say SSD is a storage device. Because it has no moving part, it is called Solid State. There is another storage device called HDD which stands for ‘Hard Disk Drive’ because it has disks in it. Actually, HDD is the most common storage device because it is cheap and has very large space to store digital information. But, it has moving parts such as motor and disk so, it is much slower than SSD and easy to break when it drops on the ground. More and more people are using mobile computers such as tablet PC, notebook PC and even smartphone. But, they need much smaller storage device in them, because those computers themselves are small ones. They are easily droppable to the ground, too. Data in SSD are not lost, even though SDD is run over a sports car. Which storage device can fit into those mobile computers? Yes, it’s SSD!! Main memory in computer stores data, too. It is called DRAM. But, it loses all data when you turn off the computer power. On the other hand, storage device maintains the data even though computer is powered off. Inside of SSD, there are flash memories. In contrast to DRAM, flash memory is a non-volatile device which means it remains data even though you turn off your computer. USB thumb drive has flash memory, too. It has a controller inside for USB interface. Instead, SSD has a controller normally for SATA or PCIe interface. Interface is a way to communicate with other device in the computer. SSD is very important storage device for any computing environment because it is non-volatile, very durable and high speed.
