Flourishing in uncertain times...
- Del Wilson, Principle of Uihlein Wilson Architects
Deregulation, online competition, modern pedagogy,
Our universities now face unprecedented challenges as the higher education sector becomes more globalised. rapidly evolving technology and ubiquitous connected devices are highly disruptive forces which represent both a challenge and an opportunity. Student expectations along with modern business requirements

methods. These in turn, are placing demands on the shape and texture of the physical learning space. With the proliferation of online learning, more than ever, the campus now has an active role to play, enriching the student experience and driving student engagement. As an Australian manufacturer, we face similar global challenges. Yet, this is our opportunity to transform, thrive and flourish. However, if we are to flourish and if our universities are to flourish, it can only be through an authentic and structured collaborative approach with educators, architects and designers, facility managers and manufacturers. This new world presents a shared challenge and a valuable opportunity for our collective response to be much greater than the sum of our disparate efforts. Working together, we can create engaging learning spaces that inspire curiosity and create a renewed and ongoing hunger for learning; traits so vital in our modern knowledge economy. It is not enough that these learning spaces be functional. The space must reflect your values and celebrate your unique approach to higher education. To

in
the
spirit
of collaboration, we have created this publication to share the research and recent projects of Sebel & KI from across the globe. We would like to thank the universities that have contributed to this book and hope that within its pages, you find inspiration for your campus. We look forward to working closely with like-minded and innovative educators, architects and designers who also see these uncertain times as a time to flourish. Sincerely

Meet our designers
Giancarlo Piretti
Shawn Green
Born 1940 – Bologna Italy
Vice President of Design & Product Marketing
Giancarlo Piretti, an Italian furniture designer, was born in Bologna in 1940. He attended the Istituto Statale d’Arte in Bologna until 1960. After finishing his studies he was employed by Anonima Castelli, where he was head designer until 1972.
Shawn Green is the vice president of design and product marketing. He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the design, development and growth of Sebel’s product portfolio of furniture solutions for education, healthcare, government and corporate markets.
From 1963 until 1970, Giancarlo Piretti taught at his alma mater, the Istituto Statale d’Arte in Bologna. In 1969 Giancarlo Piretti came up with a design hit, the “Plia” folding chair, featuring a tubular steel frame and a seat and back of transparent plastic. More recently he designed the Strive seating collection for The KI Group, a family of simple, elegant, comfortable chairs that have a consistent design language throughout the collection of stacking chairs, café stools, nesting chairs, task chairs, task stools and fixed seating available in a choice of 16 polypropylene colours. All have a unique, flexible back with a wire rod inserted into the polypropylene to encourage movement and relaxation.

Shawn leads and inspires multiple design and product development teams. He utilises his broad experience in product management, design, development and marketing to ensure Sebel remains adaptive and efficient in how it responds to its vertical markets, while ensuring a consistent visual language throughout the entire design process and product lifecycle. Prior to joining The KI Group, Green spent several years at Knoll, where he served as the director of storage marketing and as a director of product marketing for systems furniture. He also held product management positions at Steelcase and Trendway. Green holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
Michael Fewchuk Senior Designer Michael Fewchuk has been Senior Designer for Sebel Furniture for 28 years, developing products and ranges from concept to full detailing and production. His approach includes hands-on prototyping and physical modelling to prove his design decisions. He completed a BSc in Industrial Arts (Hons1) at University of New South Wales majoring in Industrial Design, and started his career based at UNSW doing research into, and design concepts for seating furniture for children with disabilities. In 1995 Michael researched and produced a publication for Sebel on seating and work surfaces for school students. This was the foundation for his design of a new one-piece moulded plastic school chair range and desking system named “Postura”. The Postura series, which pioneered large cavity gas assisted injection moulding, has become a major success story for Sebel. For Sebel’s indoor fixed seating installations in universities and auditoria, Michael has developed A4 and A3 folding writing tablets, support arms, designed the low cost stadium seat system “Viva” and most recently has developed Sebel’s crisp new generation auditorium seat system “Encore Plus/ Applause.” This design has increased functional and aesthetic options, this product is centered around simple tough blow-moulded internal structures.

Rapidly Reconfigurable Environments Source: Student Success through Engaged Learning: The Evolution - KI, 2104
F
urniture’s ability to support different teaching configurations is the key to a fluid and adaptive learning environment. A majority of classes begin with a short lecture or instruction followed by group activities, presentations and discussions. The ebb & flow of these activities requires that furniture be able to be quickly reconfigured into different arrangements quietly and easily. If it can be properly stacked or nested, the capacity of the room is quickly increased. For example, a room that normally serves 24 to 28 students could temporarily accept as many as 10 more if the furniture can be easily moved and stored against a wall. At other times just “getting it all out of the way” to completely open up the space works best. Our focus is on the ability to achieve the optimal balance of flexibility and density with a comprehensive range of product solutions. A blend of these solutions will best meet the dynamic needs now and in the future of rapidly changing tertiary environments.
Dynamic Collaboration In active and dynamic spaces, students work together on assignments, share laptops and become deeply involved with the material they are studying.
Technology Integration Clearly today’s technology-driven, wired students are learning at the speed of a “click” or a “tap”. They expect 24/7 access to study or tackle assignments anytime, anywhere.
Lecture/Auditorium Fixed and auditorium seating ensure uniformity, neat room appearance, and easy maintenance.
Conventional Classroom While the current focus is on interactive and engaged learning spaces, there is still a need for some instructor-led time in classrooms.
Engaging/Presenting Technology and mobility are key components in providing engagers and presenters the tools they need to engage students in active learning.

owling Green State University wanted
to create a new art school that would
re-envision its art program. The goal in reconstruction of Wolfe Center for the Arts was to create an atmosphere of collaboration where students and faculty can come together to not only create art, but learn about it. The space needed to be inspiring while allowing for collaboration and have the ability to support the technology needed to explore art in any form. The Sela速 Lounge Collection was essential in creating a modern workspace, ideal for comfortable and casual discussions. Unite速 workstations created a flexible
space to accommodate the diverse range of art studies while creating an aesthetically pleasing area.

owder-coated finishes, fabrics that can be recycled and reduced formaldehyde production
were all key to LEED environmental certification said Rick Orr, C-TEC Facilities Manager. “We conducted an overview of suppliers and looked at a lot of furniture styles and types. KI’s product line was so large and worked well to meet our needs.” Another factor in the furniture selection was ergonomics. “We selected student chairs with flexibility,” explained Orr. “Their ergonomics fitted the lifestyle needs for both students and staff.” In training rooms, the WireWorks 120 degree panel system was used for individual workstations while
