THE HISTORY OF THE BRAAI The origins of the word “braai “ is Afrikaans for “ barbeque “ or “grill “, and the word and language originates from the early Dutch settlers who settled in Cape Town a few centuries ago. Now it is more than an expression of the way of cooking. It is a social custom. It is fun, it is entertainment, it is always social, it is outdoors, it is music and time to be happy and time to enjoy people, food and good times.
