PRODUCTS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Kindergarten and Elementary School Children have a natural drive to research and want to discover the world around them. At the same time, the cornerstone for school education is set in kindergarten and elementary school. Connect those two aspects and let children discover the topic of renewable energies in the form of playful experiments. As a result, children are able to develop early awareness for which renewable energies are available and how they function.

leXsolar Small Family Designed for the small yet big in application – these are the products of the leXsolar Small Family. Simple experiments and playful learning take priority which is why the experiments are all self-explanatory. In the enclosed brochures you can find background information which is easily comprehensible even for those without a scientific background. The products can be used by the hands of children as well as adults, and at the same time they are robust so they can withstand the eagerness of experimentation.

leXsolar-PV Large Item Number: 1103 Correlating school physics with practical usage of the photovoltaic cells is a specialty of this system. These unique didactic innovations are the premier choice when it comes to experiments related to solar energy since it has won the Worlddidac Award. The system has been conceived in such a way that most experiments can be conducted in normal room lighting. An external current is not necessary for these experiments. The leXsolar lighting module (included) is required only for a few experiments – which can be operated with a students’ power supply.

EXPERIMENTS

TOPICS

Nowadays, a comprehensive understanding of photovoltaic is necessary for a variety of professions in the field of renewable energies. For the relevant studies and courses of education, leXsolar-PV Professional offers the optimal tools for a practicum. The spectrum of tests reaches from the physical fundamentals of photovoltaic to the analysis of the components of PV-Systems up to the design of complex PV-Systems on a laboratory scale. The experiments are designed to be equally employed for training of sales representatives for apprenticeship, in-service training of technicians and PV-installers, as well as for basic education of engineers.

Basics of the photovoltaic (PV) Components of PV-systems Function of PV-systems Function of off-grid PV-applications Storing solar PV energy Energy efficency

Basic experiments • Series and parallel connection of solar cells • Characteristics and MPP • Shading effect and bypass-diode • Angle dependency Experiments regarding components of PV-systems • Characteristics and mode of operation of shunt regulator and series regulator • Mode of operation of a deep discharge protection • Principle of an inverter • Efficiency of the inverter module • Operating principle of a inverter with different consumers • Principle of a MPP-tracker • Comparison manual and automatic MPP-tracking • Efficiency of a MPP-tracker • Principle of pulse width modulated battery charging • Efficiency of storing and comparison capacitor and battery • Charging and discharging curve of capacitor and battery • Comparison of the direct use of a radio with solar module and a capacitor as storage

Experiments regarding PV-systems • Components and their interconnection • Comparison of series and PWM regulator • Comparison of series regulator and MPP-tracker to charge a battery • Comparison of off-grid systems with and without deep discharge protection • Storing of solar energy • Set up of a complete AC off-grid PV-system

One focus of the product is the so called off-grid PV-Systems which are independent from the electricity kit. With the aid of leXsolar –PV Professional such solar off-grid systems can be built for training purposes. According to the modular structure the specific behavior of the single components can be analyzed in every detail: for example the switching threshold of a series regulator or a shunt regulator. The included MPP-Tracker facilitates, especially through the integrated manual mode, a very descriptive understanding of the very important principle of MPP-Tracking in practice. With the aid of the PWM charge regulator, the battery or the condenser can be pulse charged

to demonstrate the principle of the pulse width modulated battery charging. An inverter demonstrates the generation of an alternating voltage from a solar voltage module. The product is well-rounded with a variety of electrical loads including one ultra-bright LED and one light bulb between which their efficiency can be compared. A radio, which can also be directly run with the solar module helps to increase attention.

The best is barely good enough: leXsolar has chosen Fourier Education as its exclusive partner for data loggers and probeware. Award winning renewable energy experiment kits by leXsolar meet award winning probeware by Fourier! This product enables the automatic recording of current and voltage values by a computer. The required software is included on the leXsolar-CD. This expansion allows various additional experiments with the leXsolar-PV Professional. Many tests will be simplified because long series of measurements will no longer need to be done by hand. For example, the performance of a PWM-charge regulator can be measured with a very high temporal resolution (up to 5kHz) to display the principles of a pulse-width modulated charge regulator. The included software helps analyze the measurement or can be used to export all data to Excel.

leXsolar-Wind Large Item Number: 1404

EXPERIMENTS

This system provides you with all the answers you need concerning the basics of using wind energy. With the help of curriculumbased trials, it discusses different topics, which are necessary for understanding the functions of wind power plants. The study of how wind force, wind direction or rotor type influences the power output are only some examples of possible experiments. Both qualitative experiments – for students from age of 11 through 13 and complete quantitative trials for physics lessons until the age of 19 – are described in detail. For the qualitative trials, the expansion “Measurements without Measuring“ is required.

COMPONENTS

For the most of the experiments manuals with different difficulty levels are available: qualitative experiments for the grades 5 to 8 and quantitative manuals for older students. The expansion “Measurements without Measuring” (Item-No. 1106) is necessary for the qualitative experiments.

leXsolar-ThermalEnergy

In this product category, a couple of various technologies for the renewable heat production are summarized. Starting with basics of solar thermal energy, then moving to the application of solar collectors, the range of experiments ends with heat pump technology.

44

leXsolar-ThermalEnergy Ready-to-go Item Number: 1303 This kit is like the other products in the Ready-to-go line: usable without any additional accessories. It provides a basic understanding of solar thermal energy conversion. The most important component is the solar collector, which can be powered both by sunlight as well as by the enclosed infrared light source. Due to the comprehensive amount of accessories, a large number of experiments are possible.

The most important component of the kit is the solar collector, which can be used for the conversion of radiant energy to heat using water as an energy source. The solar collector consists of the following components: • • • • •

Special frame with threaded holes for either vertical or inclined positioning Two removable glass windscreens which help to decrease losses based on convection. Blackened helix coils made of Plexiglas, six-fold curved with two ports for quick acting coupling Black / White lacquered collector back (interchangeable) Styrofoam-insulation board (also individually removable) with integrated thermometer

The collector can be powered with both sunlight as well as the enclosed infrared light source. After about 30 min of irradiation, a water temperature difference of circa 20°C (68°F) can be measured. As soon as the elevated is connected via the enclosed hose with the solar collector, a heat convection based on temperature-dependent differences of density will start a water cycle. Therefore, a heat circuit starts up. With the heat exchanger, consisting of copper pipe spiraled inside of a transparent plastic container; the caloric energy can be transmitted from one liquid to another. The transport of water through the spiral exchanger will be supported by a circulating pump, which can be mounted on the collector.

Thanks to the leXsolar-ESave Ready-to-go, discussions about energy becomes more tangible. The approach is holistic: the students focus first on issues like global energy consumption, climate change or energy consumption at private households. Based on the question-at-hand, students will make measurements based on the problem; for instance things like room temperature or climate, water and energy consumption, etc. The goal is to foster the ability to identify potentials for improvements and savings.
