The Welsh Public Health Conference will be held on Wednesday 18 July 2012 at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff. The conference, titled ‘Together for Public Health’ is the second Public Health Conference to be held in Wales. Jointly organised by Public Health Wales and the Welsh Government and in partnership with the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) and Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), the conference theme is based around Together for Health, the Welsh Government’s five year vision for the NHS in Wales. Funding for Older People in the Community The Barchester Healthcare Foundation, a registered grant making charity that helps older people and other adults with a disability has announced that for 2012, their grant making priority is to help older people (65+) in the community, to improve their mobility, independence and quality of life. Grants of between £100 and £5,000 are available to both individuals and small community groups. In the case of individuals, all applications need to be supported and completed by a third party sponsor. A sponsor could be, for example, a health/ personal care professional, social worker or charity/ support group representative. Excellence in tobacco control? Do you know of an organisation, group or person that deserves national recognition for what they do to reduce tobacco use or help people to quit smoking? Why not nominate them for the Excellence in Tobacco Control Awards for Wales? Consultation on the draft document 'Together against stroke' a national delivery plan for the NHS up to 2016 Stroke remains a top priority for Wales. Stroke has a devastating and lasting impact on the lives of people and their families. It is estimated there are around 11,000 stroke events, including 6,000 new strokes, per year in Wales. The draft delivery plan sets out the Welsh Government’s vision for the population of Wales and what this means for NHS stroke services. Closing date 8 August 2012 Cardiff Institute of Society and Health and PHA Cymru announces the seventh in the Julian Tudor Hart annual lecture series; Less is more! - More or less? Given by Dr Chris Jones, Cwm Taf Health Board, Wednesday 11th July 2012. Venue: Committee Rooms, Glamorgan Building, Cardiff University. Time: 5:30pm for wine reception, 6:00pm for lecture. The aim of this lecture series is to engage the academic community in Wales in topical public health issues with a view to promoting relevant research and scholarship. Lecture Summary: Improving outcomes and enabling equity in a health care system in Wales facing hard financial times. Tackling health inequalities, unacceptable variations in outcome, public perceptions, and the citizen’s role in co producing the system going forward are now challenges on an industrial scale. Carpe diem! The event is open to all and is free, however due to limited capacity registration is necessary and entry will be for confirmed registrants only.
