A Directory of Enterprise Services in Rhondda Cynon Taf

Welcome to the second Directory of Services for RCT! The first Directory was successful in that it got people talking about social enterprises and their value in bringing people together to create. Social enterprises are an entwinement of people, product and service, an empathic bind for building posi vity and making lives more fulfilling. Social enterprises enhance lives, nurture where nurture is needed and make money to provide more of the same. Interes ngly Social Enterprise and Co-produc on (the ‘buzz word’in our Voluntary Sector circles) capture very similar values. Co-produc on is about people; people helping others to provide public services for more effec ve and on-going services; it is about strong rela onships between the people and those providing the services. Co-produc on increases the me people make to take pride in their community, it builds a stronger community with healthier residents. It is not David Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ - it is a return to Welsh tradi on of community members working together. In Aneurin Bevan’s words, ‘collecƟve acƟon to liŌ all of us together.’ Come, join and co-produce by suppor ng the Social Enterprises listed in this Directory Please make this Directory your first call of reference when looking for a service with ‘community’ at the heart of everything that it does! Book Amnesty

SURRENDER YOUR UNWANTED BOOKS! Please help to create opportunities for people who feel excluded and marginalised in some of Europe’s most disadvantaged communities by donating your unwanted books. All books in readable condition are welcomed and will be put to good use. The surrendered books will be collected by Factory Books. Our team of volunteers will sort through the books. Books that are suitable to be resold will be offered for sale through our on-line bookstore in the Amazon marketplace. The remaining books will be recycled. Factory Books is a social enterprise based in the Rhondda Valleys – one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in Europe. Factory Books offers individuals who feel marginalised and excluded opportunities to develop new skills, self-confidence, self-esteem, and a supportive social network. Factory Books approach is to focus on people’s strengths rather than their weaknesses and enable individuals previously labelled as “service users” to become providers of valued services to the wider community. At least forty individuals benefit from these opportunities every week. Factory Books is a wholly owned subsidiary of Arts Factory – a community owned development trust based in the Rhondda. Arts Factory exists to build a stronger, more inclusive community.

“I am forty four years old. When I was younger I had a bad accident that put me in a wheelchair and left me unable to speak. I have been coming to Arts Factory for over ten years now. My support worker Jerry comes with me. I stamp books with an ink stamp to show that they have come from Factory Books. The main reason I come is for the company. I have a lot of good friends here and they are always happy to see me. That makes me more confident about myself. If Arts Factory wasn’t here I would be stuck in the house. I would probably wish I was dead.”

Carl Morley “I’ve been a volunteer at Arts Factory for the last eight months. Before I came here I had been sitting around the house for about four months and before that I was at school. School wasn’t a good experience for me. The teachers didn’t explain much to me and I didn’t get along with some of them. In the end I had to leave. It was a relief in a weird way. At Arts Factory I work on the Factory Books project, listing books and handing sales. I love it here. I love the people I work with and the feeling that this is a job I can do. I have learned a lot too. In the future I would like to get a job in IT.”

“Working in Partnership to reduce Crime in the Cynon Valley”

The Cynon Valley Indoor Bowls Centre opened its doors for the first me on 1 September 1996. The official opening was conducted by Cllr. Russell Roberts in the presence of Cllr. W.J.Murphy (leader of the RCT County Council) and Mrs. E.Davies (Chair of Leisure and Tourism). The founda on stone had been laid on 18 December 1995 by Cllr. Alby Davies (Chair of Leisure Services) and construc on of this pres gious £1.2million building was undertaken over the following months by the main contractor - Mowlem South Wales. The centre is built on the site of the former Deep Duffryn Colliery - a coal mine which was originally sunk in 1850. By 1935 the Colliery employed 140 men on the surface and 1,250 underground with an output of 500,000 tons of coal. The mine closed on 21 September 1979. The CVIBC was originally staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers who willingly donated their me for the love of the game and the belief that what they were crea ng was something worthwhile which would benefit both the community and the game of bowls. Many of these pioneers are s ll very much involved with the running of the Centre. Since then the Centre has expanded from a simple bowls club to a Community Enterprise and carvery ‘Woods Bar and Restaurant’ with a turnover of more than £450,000 providing employment opportuni es for the local area.

Charity Reunites Owner with money found in property Rhondda Cynon Taf based charity toogoodtowaste are now offering an Ethical House Clearance Service where they clear all unwanted items in the property following a downsizing, house move or bereavement. On the 7 of February a team of Staff and volunteers conducted a house clearance in Tonyrefail on returning to their sor ng facility in the Ynyshir branch they discovered a wallet with a substan al amount of money in it. General Manager Shaun England was made aware of the discovery immediately and he contacted the owner to no fy him of the discovery and the wallet was kept safe un l the owner could collect it. Mr Lyn Griffiths of Tonyrefail went to the Ynyshir branch on Friday 8 February where he was reunited with the wallet, he was extremely grateful of the honesty of toogoodtowaste that he made a generous dona on to the volunteers which is much appreciated by everyone at toogoodtowaste. Shaun England, General Manager stated: ‘It was great to be able to re-unite Mr Griffiths with the wallet and its contents, the honesty of our staff and volunteers was then rewarded by Mr Griffiths who made a very generous dona on to the charity. Our Ethical House Clearance Service aims to reuse as many donated household items as possible. Following the clearance the items are sorted and either sold through our charity shops or passed onto other charitable organisa ons, on this occasion our thorough sort system proved that the donated items that we receive really are toogoodtowaste.’ The dona on made by Mr Griffiths will go towards providing volunteers with training, corporate wear and team building days.
