A Directory of Enterprise Services in Rhondda Cynon Taf
Welcome to the Fourth Directory of Services for RCT! This Directory demonstrates the diversity of Social Enterprise within our County. What does Social Enterprise means to different people? Here are several quotes from people suppor ng Enterprise in RCT:
What is it about Social Enterprise that makes us different – It is the posi ve difference that we make!
If you’re running a Social Enterprise, then you’re in the business of doing good. If you’re no longer in business then you’re not doing good
Pay back is rewarding – it is about networking: Different people helping out and you helping them in return.
Plug Social and Enterprise together into worlds that didn’t exist before…..
A Social Enterprise can be anything that it needs to be as long as there is a need – that is crucial!
Keep this Directory handy – you will need to use a service adver sed here very soon….. Don’t forget to give a copy to your friends, family and leave a copy at your work place. Thanks to Ken Moon- Interlink, Derek Smith – Aberdare Races, Sue Phillips- Interlink, Meriel Gough – Interlink for these quotes. Book Amnesty
SURRENDER YOUR UNWANTED BOOKS! Please help to create opportunities for people who feel excluded and marginalised in some of Europe’s most disadvantaged communities by donating your unwanted books. All books in readable condition are welcomed and will be put to good use. The surrendered books will be collected by Factory Books. Our team of volunteers will sort through the books. Books that are suitable to be resold will be offered for sale through our on-line bookstore in the Amazon marketplace. The remaining books will be recycled. Factory Books is a social enterprise based in the Rhondda Valleys – one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in Europe. Factory Books offers individuals who feel marginalised and excluded opportunities to develop new skills, self-confidence, self-esteem, and a supportive social network. Factory Books approach is to focus on people’s strengths rather than their weaknesses and enable individuals previously labelled as “service users” to become providers of valued services to the wider community. At least forty individuals benefit from these opportunities every week. Factory Books is a wholly owned subsidiary of Arts Factory – a community owned development trust based in the Rhondda. Arts Factory exists to build a stronger, more inclusive community.
“I am forty four years old. When I was younger I had a bad accident that put me in a wheelchair and left me unable to speak. I have been coming to Arts Factory for over ten years now. My support worker Jerry comes with me. I stamp books with an ink stamp to show that they have come from Factory Books. The main reason I come is for the company. I have a lot of good friends here and they are always happy to see me. That makes me more confident about myself. If Arts Factory wasn’t here I would be stuck in the house. I would probably wish I was dead.”
Carl Morley “I’ve been a volunteer at Arts Factory for the last eight months. Before I came here I had been sitting around the house for about four months and before that I was at school. School wasn’t a good experience for me. The teachers didn’t explain much to me and I didn’t get along with some of them. In the end I had to leave. It was a relief in a weird way. At Arts Factory I work on the Factory Books project, listing books and handing sales. I love it here. I love the people I work with and the feeling that this is a job I can do. I have learned a lot too. In the future I would like to get a job in IT.”

A Rhondda cra -making business launched from the hear elt desire to improve the wellbeing of the local community is flourishing thanks to investment from the Community Economic Development Programme. Cra of Hearts Ltd in Llwynypia Road, Tonypandy is a labour of love for proprietor Jo Roe who is not only a keen cra er herself, but also spent years working in the caring profession and wanted to combine the two to make a dierence to the lives of local people. Thanks to £82,500 of investment her dream became a reality with the crea on of a social enterprise that pledges to enhance the local social environment and wellbeing. It also means every penny of profit goes back into the business and the community it serves. The Community Economic Development Programme that made the funding possible is delivered in partnership by a consor um of Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Torfaen County Borough Councils, and supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. By encouraging people to enjoy the art of cra -making she is bringing groups of people together, strengthening the local community and helping residents who may feel lonely or isolated. Jo relies heavily on the assistance of local volunteers to help run the shop, support workshops and bring new ideas and inspira on to the services being provided.
10
Cra of Hearts Ltd offers a wide range of services including cra workshops ranging from beading and scrapbooks to card and jewellery making, kni ng, crochet and die cu ng. The shop also provides for all ages as a popular Kid Kra meets on the weekend. Jo also offers free in-house demonstra ons, community group support, cards for special occasions, cu ng and lamina ng services along with selling a whole range of materials, tools and resources for those with a desire to ‘get cra y’! She explained, ‘Cra of Hearts offers so much to the local community through its workshops and various services. But this is much more than just teaching people to develop their skills and interests in cra -making, it is also about helping to improve their wellbeing by bringing them together and allowing them to make new friends and build rela onships.

CCAW is governed by the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisa on (CISWO), a service providing charity, who has offered legal, governance and sustainability support for over sixty years to the miners welfare network (including Chari es, Mutual Socie es, Charitable Incorporated Organisa ons, trading arms and Social Enterprises). Lead Community Accountant, Rhys Williams says ‘Smaller chari es are rarely given the same level of priority as bigger commercial customers by your average high street accountants. They fall into a niche market, and as a result, providing them with a professional and compliant service is not always cost-effec ve, especially if you only have a small number of similar client types on your books. CCAW aims to redress that issue by solely targe ng the charitable sector, with a long standing history of working with, and providing services for third sector organisa ons we aim to offer an affordable accountancy solu on to charitable organisa ons regardless of size.’ More informa on on our range of services can be found at www.CCAW.org.uk Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisa on, Unit 5, Mari me Offices Maesycoed, Pontypridd CF37 1DZ Tel.no. 01443 485233 13
The Cynon Valley Indoor Bowls Centre opened its doors for the first me on 1 September 1996. The official opening was conducted by Cllr. Russell Roberts in the presence of Cllr. W.J.Murphy (leader of the RCT County Council) and Mrs. E.Davies (Chair of Leisure and Tourism). The founda on stone had been laid on 18 December 1995 by Cllr. Alby Davies then (Chair of Leisure Services) and construc on of this pres gious £1.2million building was undertaken over the following months by the main contractor Mowlem South Wales. The centre is built on the site of the former Deep Duffryn Colliery - a coal mine which was originally sunk in 1850. By 1935 the Colliery employed 140 men on the surface and 1,250 underground with an output of 500,000 tons of coal. The mine closed on 21 September 1979. The CVIBC was originally staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers who willingly donated their me for the love of the game and the belief that what they were crea ng was something worthwhile which would benefit both the community and the game of bowls. Many of these pioneers are s ll very much involved with the running of the Centre. Since then the Centre has expanded from a simple bowls club to a Community Enterprise and carvery ‘Woods Bar and Restaurant’ with a turnover of more than £450,000 providing employment opportuni es for the local area.
