Book Amnesty

SURRENDER YOUR UNWANTED BOOKS! Please help to create opportunities for people who feel excluded and marginalised in some of Europe’s most disadvantaged communities by donating your unwanted books. All books in readable condition are welcomed and will be put to good use. The surrendered books will be collected by Factory Books. Our team of volunteers will sort through the books. Books that are suitable to be resold will be offered for sale through our on-line bookstore in the Amazon marketplace. The remaining books will be recycled. Factory Books is a social enterprise based in the Rhondda Valleys – one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in Europe. Factory Books offers individuals who feel marginalised and excluded opportunities to develop new skills, self-confidence, self-esteem, and a supportive social network. Factory Books approach is to focus on people’s strengths rather than their weaknesses and enable individuals previously labelled as “service users” to become providers of valued services to the wider community. At least forty individuals benefit from these opportunities every week. Factory Books is a wholly owned subsidiary of Arts Factory – a community owned development trust based in the Rhondda. Arts Factory exists to build a stronger, more inclusive community.

“I am forty four years old. When I was younger I had a bad accident that put me in a wheelchair and left me unable to speak. I have been coming to Arts Factory for over ten years now. My support worker Jerry comes with me. I stamp books with an ink stamp to show that they have come from Factory Books. The main reason I come is for the company. I have a lot of good friends here and they are always happy to see me. That makes me more confident about myself. If Arts Factory wasn’t here I would be stuck in the house. I would probably wish I was dead.”

Carl Morley “I’ve been a volunteer at Arts Factory for the last eight months. Before I came here I had been sitting around the house for about four months and before that I was at school. School wasn’t a good experience for me. The teachers didn’t explain much to me and I didn’t get along with some of them. In the end I had to leave. It was a relief in a weird way. At Arts Factory I work on the Factory Books project, listing books and handing sales. I love it here. I love the people I work with and the feeling that this is a job I can do. I have learned a lot too. In the future I would like to get a job in IT.”

Featured Enterprise Cra of Hearts Ltd Cra of Hearts Ltd opened its door on the 14 February 2013, with one member of sta (funded) and a handful of volunteers. Whilst trading as a shop, Cra of Hearts remains a social enterprise with full community aims and everything we do is commi ed to the ethos of developing a sustainable enterprise for all members of the local and wider community. Our volunteers are commi ed and hardworking - always looking for the next challenge and opportunity. We have a ended a good number of community events and one large show (Cardi Cra and Hobby Show). It was with volunteer development in mind as well as community par cipa on that we planned to take part in these ac vi es. During each ac vity the volunteers are encouraged and supported to engage with all par cipants and undertake a variety of tasks which in turn increases their developing skills. These ac vi es include; engaging with customers, networking with other businesses and organisa ons and giving free demonstra ons and workshops. We now have three volunteers who are confident in demonstra ng and giving workshops, this enables us to plan and prepare for future events, (which we have already booked in advance). Other volunteers will develop in the same capacity and at present we have five more volunteers ready to embark upon this.

CraŌ of Hearts Summer Extravaganza (from small beginings!) Some me ago staff and volunteers at Cra of Hearts felt it was me to organise an event of their own, which would encourage cra ers from the local and wider communi es to show and sell their products. It was decided that we would hold a small cra fair in a local community building and we set about finding a venue. We already had over 40 contacts who would be likely to engage in this opportunity and so we knew we had to find a venue with capacity for around thirty par cipants. Through a partnership developed in previous years we were offered the opportunity to use one of Rhondda Cynon Taf leisure centres - and were told we could have the Tonyrefail Centre. It was explained that we could have the main hall and Tyn y Bryn Field! At the same me requests to book tables were coming thick and fast and we soon reached our 30 stall target. With further discussion it was agreed that to make best use of the opportunity we turn the event into a family fun day with cra at its heart! We now have sixty stalls booked (full capacity), with face pain ng and a free bouncy castle inside the hall. In the field we have a BBQ, refreshment marquee, two marquees for stalls, Army Recruitment, Crazy Golf, Beat the Goalie, Mini Go karts, Spanish buffet, as well as a mini fun fair! The event is free to enter and costs will be kept as low as possible in order to enable members of the community to par cipate in as many of the ac vi es as they choose. This promises to be a terrific event which is being publicized well across RCT and we will repeat this in November as our Christmas extravaganza.
