Chapter 2 of Mountain Road Mystery OUT NOW!

Halloween

The origin of Halloween Celebrations and traditions bring people together. Halloween originated in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain it started as a religious celebration to acknowledge the end of harvest season.

Pumpkin Carving Trick or Treat Trick or treating started as young children going door to door in their neighbourhood and performing a little performance to be rewarded with treats. This tradition dates back to the 16th century

By; Marianna De Lauri

Carving pumpkins is a common tradition when celebrating Halloween. This tradition started in Ireland (19th century) with people carving demon faces into turnips, they did this to frighten Jacks wondering soul. Jack is a figure from an Irish folk tale. When Irish immigrants moved to the U.S.A , instead of carving in turnips they carved in pumpkins, as they were native to the region.

Battle of the Books in ISB! Battle of the Books! But… what is it anyway? Battle of the books is an annual event that takes place in ISB. This year is the second time that ISB has done it. Battle of the books is a small competition, where you have a team of around 4 people, and you read a certain book, and memorise as many things as you can. On the day of the competition, there is somebody asking questions about the book, and the quickest team to answer gets a point. It is an exciting event, especially if you love reading books! It is very popular in elementary and middle schools. It first appeared on a radio program in Chicago, and is now popular pretty much worldwide. This year, four teams of four have signed up; The Wellingtons, The No’se, The Venus Flytraps, and The Bookworms. These four teams will be competing in Battle of the Books, in ISB.

Who won? The Venus Flytraps!!! - 17/20 The No’ses - 16/20 The Bookworms - 16/20 The Wellingtons - 15.5/20

Around the World What's going on in Gaza?

In one YouTube video, a 10-year-old Palestinian girl sobs as she describes how terrified she is. Now, at the age of ten, she wishes she could take action. She asks herself, "Why, why do we deserve this?" every day. She describes how her family says that the Israelis despise them and their kind because they are Muslims. People should be more informed about the various wars that are raging throughout the world since they are just equally dangerous as any other.

By; Navya Parmar

Israel's forces have killed at least 7,000 Palestinians. Women, children, and the elderly are being held captive by Israelis. This is intended to kill and attract other people. Israel's most deadly attack on Gaza took the lives of nearly 3,500 Palestinians, killing over 1,000 children. Gaza's hospitals are attempting to stretch out supplies of medicine and fuel for generators. The authorities have arranged for the transportation of much-needed aid from Egypt. Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces shot and killed a young Palestinian girl named Razan Nasrallah at the age of 12 at 10PM during protests in Jenin, a city in the northern West Bank, in response to the hospital explosion that killed many people in the troubled Gaza Strip. Israel's chief police officer, Kobi Shabtai, has declared that protests in favor of Gaza will receive "zero tolerance". Kobi Shabtai has threatened to send anti-war protestors to the troubled Palestinian territory that Israel has been bombing every day for almost two weeks.

Around the World International Peace Day

A way to be involved with world peace day is to make peace posters, flags, banners, poems, E.T.C. You can also write about peace.

By; Navya Parmar

The International Day of Peace, commonly known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday celebrated annually on September 21. It all began in 1986, with the beginning of the United Nations Peace Bell at the UN headquarters in NEW YORK CITY. Every year on the day of peace since then, a special ceremony has been organized. The full reason why the International Peace Day started was to remind the UN’s commitment to solve and resolve and have peace to conflict resolution. “Together, let us take action now to build a more inclusive, sustainable, and peaceful world for all. Peace is not only a noble vision for humanity. Peace is a call to action.” This is a quote from the UN. The quote explains that together, we can do so much action and make peace.

Around the World A Special Cat With Two Noses?

“She has proven to be a gentle lady who adores a fuss and a cuddle and we are hopeful her newfound fame will mean she will have no shortage of potential adopters, so she can settle down and become the center of a loving family.”

By; Navya Parmar

This highly rare orphan cat from an animal shelter in England stunned her caregivers by having two noses instead of one. It had to be a mutation!!! Nanny McPhee is the name given to the feline cat after the fictional film character. Her owner's illness meant they could no longer care for the poor cat, therefore she had to be turned over to Cats Protection Adoption Centre in Warrington, Cheshire. At first, the staff thought that Nanny McPhee might have just had a large nose. But after a vet checkup, it was clear that the four year old had two noses. The 'one-of-a-kind' second nose is thought to be the result of a genetic defect, but the black and white cat has been unaffected by it. “A cat with two noses is a first for us,” said veterinary officer Fiona Brockbank. “This is a real rarity and, thankfully, it isn’t causing her any problems at all. “Like all of our cats, Nanny McPhee will be neutered before rehoming so any concerns about inherited problems are resolved as she won’t have kittens.” Lindsay Kerr, the shelter's manager, feels the small cat's two noses will help her find a new home fast.

Mountain Road Mystery

Written by Sophia Mohn

Chapter 2 I woke up with a cold sweat. I looked around. The other two were sleeping peacefully, as if nothing happened. “Was all of that just a dream? I’m sure that was real,” I thought to myself. “Wait, did we all sleep in the same tent? I could’ve sworn… Ok, I think I need some fresh air.” I quietly unzipped myself out of my sleeping bag, and tiptoed my way out of the tent. Once I was out, I decided to walk around the forest. “Don’t go far,” I told myself. I noticed that the forest was unusually quiet. No birds chirping, no leaves rustling. Just the sounds of my footsteps on the moss.Suddenly, it felt as if a magnet was tugging me somewhere. I couldn’t stop. I knew I didn’t go far. Until I checked behind me. I could see the tent, but it was moving away from me, stretching out. I gasped. “Bella!” I tried running to the tent, but the imaginary magnet was pulling me away from it. The only way I could go was forward. I was walking and walking to a place I didn’t even know. I turned around, and sighed. It was true. The tent was gone. Bella was gone. But then I saw something… or someone, in the corner of my eye. “Hello..?” I tried to calm myself down. I tried to tell myself that I was safe, but something inside me told me I wasn’t. “Is anyone there?” I looked around, but when I looked back, I saw her. A young girl, around 10 years old, was standing in front of me. She was wearing a tattered white dress. Her hand and knees were covered in healing scars, as if something had attacked her. “Who… who are you?” I asked. The little girl stood and stared at me. She looked around cautiously. “You must get out of here, before it’s too late,” she whispered. “Wh.. what? Get out of here? I don’t even know where I am!” I could see the fear in her eyes. She looked around again. “You must get out of here,” she repeated. “You must get out before it happens to you” Her deathly stare gave me chills. “Who?” I croaked. My voice choked with fear, but I continued to talk. “Who.. Who are you talking about?” “They’re coming for you.. hurry..” She suddenly grabbed me, and she started pulling me down. I was sinking. “Stop! Let me go” I tried moving away, but her grip was too strong. “He’s not safe… You’re not safe… What did I do?” Her emotions started changing, as if she was losing control. I was sinking faster and faster. The ground was now up to my neck. I couldn’t breathe. “Stop.. please…” The ground covered my face. I closed my eyes, and the world became black.

How to plan your perfect Halloween Party!

The 31st of October is famously known as Halloween. People dress up in either scary or funny costumes, go trick or treating during the night, carve pumpkins, watch Halloween movies, and have a Halloween party! But how do you start a Halloween party? And how do you make it perfect? Well, continue reading this article to find out how to plan your perfect Halloween party!

The first thing you need to do is decide if your Halloween party is for kids, teens, or adults. It can also be a party for all ages. If it’s for kids, then you should add more games. If it’s for adults, maybe make some Halloween cocktails.

Set the date and time. Most Halloween parties are planned for the 31st of October, but you can plan them for the 28th or 29th of October. You can have a party from 7-9 p.m. For children, parties would last between 1 and 2 hours. For teens, they might want to stretch their party to a sleepover.

Create your invitations. It could be a poster or a card. Include the date, time, location, and activities. Here are some ideas.

You will need a color theme for your party. A popular color theme is orange and black. Others can be purple, green, or yellow. Here is an example.

Start setting up your decorations. You can put up a pumpkin arch when your guests come in, hang Halloween garlands, place carved pumpkins, stand up skeletons, candles, spiderwebs, or even have a smoke machine to get a nice spooky effect. Here are some examples of decorations.

Start planning out your games. Games are one of the key things you’ll need for a Halloween party. Some examples are Murder Mystery, Tic Tac Toe, Musical Chairs, Guess the Food, Scavenger Hunt, Wrap the Mummy, and Freeze Dance.

Create your own Halloween playlist for your party. Some popular Halloween songs are “Monster Mash” or “The Addams Family Theme Song”. Your playlist should have at least 25 songs.

Snacks! That is also one of the main things you will need for a party. Halloween's snacks are delicious and decorative. You can make pumpkin pie, pumpkin and ghost cupcakes, green monster cookies, pumpkin oranges, mummy sausages, or Oreo spiders. Don’t forget to write down an allergy list for the food you will be making.

Buy cutlery, plates, cups, and tissue paper. If your party is at home, then you can use your plates and cups without spending money. If not, then you can buy some. Buy Halloween-themed plates, like a ghost- or pumpkin-designed plate.

After this, you should create a schedule for your party. Write down the exact time when your activities will start and end. Also, create a checklist for who will be coming.

And that's it! Your Halloween party is set. You can turn these steps into a checklist, so while you are planning, you can check off every step you need.
