Probably the most embarrassing question for a sport administrator is the following: is it better to stay with tradition which means the past, or to give more consideration to progress i.e. the future? Both considerations deserve respect and a proper approach. To maintain a sport discipline as it was developed during the years is probably safer since the major necessities are known whilst seconding the current trend, that is more devoted to money, can be risky and requires substantial changes without knowing the final outcome.

2

Again, staying with the past would probably require just few changes, that however must be voted by an Assembly or Congress which means a sufficient number of votes expressed by the major body of an International Federation must be secured. Therefore it is not sufficient to have an idea, for example to use the past with some changes, it is necessary to obtain the votes! It seems a bit easier to follow the adventure of a new impact. Of course also this case shall be duly authorized, but certain International Federations can obtain the purpose using the power of the existing Council or Executive body, instead trying to convince the Assembly or Congress. Now allow me to better clarify what is actually at the basis of what is indicated above. It is evident that people are currently well aware that money is required to conduct a whatsoever activity. The variety of sport disciplines that might form a package easily sold substantially increased in the last period. It is not our purpose to make confrontation between technical sports of the past and technical sports of the future. But a fact is sure, anything that is maintained (past) or adopted (future) do have a value. We are witnessing that even the major sport events need to give adequate consideration to the importance of finances. On the other hand how can we criticize the ambition of International Sport Federations, which try to develop something new as an alternative to the past? In almost all other areas we have evidence that progress imposes radical changes, even if they happen over many years. We have to pay attention to what happened in the meantime and to what human beings noted as to the result of progress. Digital instead of analog, constant variation of models in the car industry, better treatments in every medical area, a long list of examples could be included, but to be clear: it is without a doubt that the world is changing. The International Federation that I have the privilege to preside is one of the best examples of sport disciplines that need to be assessed. But the problem is big. How can we forget what truly sustained the ISU for years, just to adopt new lines for the reasons that the modern world so requires? I personally believe that to maintain a high reputation it is necessary to deliver what people would like to see (that probably means the future). Of course an essential part of the solution is in the capable hands of those available to exchange points of view. At the end of the day I realize that there is an activity that was valid yesterday and will also be important in the future. The activity has a name: cooperation. ISU TECHNICAL COMMITTEES Single and Pair Skating

Synchronized Skating

Members of the Single and Pair Skating Technical Committee (SPTC) served as Referees and Technical Controllers in various Junior and Senior Grand Prix Events and at the ISU Grand Prix Figure Skating Final. They also moderated the ISU Recognized Judges Seminars in Japan in November and Australia in December. Following the publication of ISU Communication 1893, regarding the Rules of Procedure for Officials Assessment Commission (OAC) - Evaluation of Judging, a lot of time was devoted to the joint work conducted with the OAC on evaluating Judges that attended ISU Events. All SPTC members discussed possible ways to refine the ISU Judging System. The outcome of this work

Ice Dance

Members of the Ice Dance Technical Committee (IDTC) officiated as Referees and Technical Controllers at Junior and Senior ISU Grand Prix competitions in addition to the Challenger Series and other International competitions. Communications for Technical Requirements for next season’s Novice Events and Junior and Senior Short Dance and Free Dance are been under taken which includes an effort to simplify and clarify all Rules so there is more uniformity in the work of Technical Panels and Judges. The IDTC continues to evaluate the work of Judges with additional and more comprehensive criteria included in the Reports of the OAC. Following the sudden and sad death of Technical Committee member Gilles Vandenbroeck, Walter Zuccaro (ITA) joined the IDTC. The IDTC will remember Mr Vandenbroeck with fondness. The Synchronized Skating Technical Committee (SySTC) will be welcoming the IOC representatives to the French Cup in Rouen (FRA) at the end of January in order to assess the possibility to include the sport in the Olympic Program. The SySTC also ran a successful training camp in Vierumaki (FIN) for ISU officials with the on-ice support of Team Unique. A busy season of events will culminate in the ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships in Zagreb (CRO) and the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships which will take place in Hamilton (CAN). The SySTC continue to work to enhance the training opportunities for Coaches and will announce a new initiative that will bring the Synchronized Skating seminars more in line with those of Ice Dance and Pair Skating.

Speed Skating

The ISU World Cup Speed Skating Season kicked off for the first time in Asia and the results from the first four competitions have determined the allotment of quota places for the World Single Distances Championships. 23 countries have qualified quota places, and two more countries have been placed on a short list. The Mass Start event gained particular attention in the first part of the World Cup season, since it will be introduced as an ISU Championships event at the 2015 World Single Distances Championships. A slightly revised set of competition rules for the event (16 laps with 3 intermediate sprints, both for Ladies and Men, and with the warm-up lane included as part of the race track) has proven successful. The ISU World Cup circuit will resume at the end of January with qualifying competitions for the World Sprint and World Allround Championships.

Short Track

The Short Track Speed Skating Technical Committee (STSSTC) has been working on a number of projects and attended the first four ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating Events that took place in 2014. The creation of a DVD for Officials was successfully finalized which includes a presentation which will be available shortly on the ISU website. ISU Communications 1918 ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating 2014/15 – Update; 1919 Short Track Speed Skating Qualifying Tables and 1920 Short Track Speed Skating Ranking Races at ISU Championships have been published to provide clarification on the forthcoming ISU Events. The STSSTC approved a number of seminars which will take place in Australia, Germany and Hungary and an additional regional seminar for Officials will take place in Norway.

PAST MASTERS MARINA ANISSINA (FRA) : BORN 1975 GWENDAL PEIZERAT (FRA) : BORN 1972 Olympic Winter Games Ice Dance Gold Medal 2002 Ice Dance Bronze Medal 1998 ISU World Figure Skating Championships Ice Dance Gold Medal 2000 Ice Dance Silver Medal 1998, 1999, 2001 ISU European Figure Skating Championships Ice Dance Gold Medal 2000, 2002 Ice Dance Silver Medal 1999, 2001 Ice Dance Bronze Medal 1998 Ice Dancers Anissina & Peizerat teamed up in early 1993. Both skaters medaled with other partners at ISU World Junior Championships. Anissina skated with Ilia Averbukh for Russia and Peizerat with Marina Morel for France. When Anissina spilt with her partner she wrote to Peizerat who in turn invited her to his hometown Lyon (FRA). They were a good match and won two European titles and crowned World Champions in 2000. In 2002 they won the first Ice Dance Olympic gold medal for France. The couple retired from competition after the Olympics but continued skating together for many years in shows. Anissina is a coach and choreographer while Peizerat was named a Chevalier of the National Order of Merit in 1998 and a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 2003.
