THE CLIVE COX-TRAINED Supremacy became the first Group 2 winner for 2020’s leading European first-season sire Mehmas when taking the Richmond Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, emulating Mehmas himself, who won the race in 2016 for Al Shaqab Racing.

The colt was bred by Kangyu International Racing, but was raised, grazed and consigned by John Tuthill of Owenstown Farm.

“It is rather exciting to be associated with a horse like Supremacy, who was bred and raised here on the farm for clients Kangyu International Racing. He was always a nice horse and Clive Cox bought him in Donny and I’m delighted he has gone on to win a Group race so early in his career. It is lovely that he has emulated his sire,” said Tuthill to Aisling Crowe for our Goodwood daily digital review.

The owner of Owenstown Stud, which is located outside Maynooth in County Kildare, explained a little more about the breeders’ involvement in the industry.

“They are involved with Cotai Glory and we are preparing Supremacy’s half-brother by him to go to Book 1 which is very exciting. It is a breeder’s dream to go to Book 1 with a Group race update and something fresh in the memory.”

Supremacy is out of Triggers Broom (Arcano), and is the second foal and winner for his dam, who also has a filly foal by Cotai Glory and returned to him in the spring.

Tuthill believes that the son of Exceed And Excel has every chance of emulating the success of Mehmas next season.

“I like Cotai Glory as a stallion, he is getting very nice stock, good strong horses and I think he has every chance of making it. Tally-Ho is very good at doing what it does, they picked Mehmas, they picked Cotai Glory and, of course, they picked Kodiac!” he added.

At the time of writing, Mehmas is also sire of 14 winners, including the unbeaten Listed Rose Bowl Stakes winner Method and Muker, who was third in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes.
