Hugh Nankivell & Guests: Vexations
WELCOME I am delighted to introduce International Agatha Christie Festival 2017. This year’s festival begins from Agatha Christie Mallowan’s 1946 “archaeological memoir”, Come, Tell Me How You Live, which recounts with characteristic humour and curiosity her fascination for discovery and unheard stories through a series of archaeological digs of ancient Babylonian cities in present-day Syria and Iraq uncovering every-day and other precious objects from over three thousand years ago. For five days, from 13-17 September 2017, IACF has gathered artists, writers, performers, scientists and other special guests across all ages, from South Devon and the many places that Christie herself travelled to and was so inspired by, to share their stories and bring their own forms of invention, ingenuity and imagination, for observing and understanding the world, whether in film or visual art, music, literature and dance. Torbay has its own extraordinary histories, always seeking reinvention, and to shake-off its worn repetitions and patterns, like anywhere and anyone. In a world that at times can seem somewhat upside down, why are we so fascinated by stories of mystery and disappearance, of murder and wrong-doing? Are they mere entertainments, and what settings and places – or even misunderstanding - do they rely on? Here during this year’s festival, I invite you to enjoy the best of Torbay, to share this little archaeology of the human mind. And how this itself is made up of the many ancient and far-away stories, languages and minerals gathered, beneath the very ground we walk on, even on our own doorstep. James Tyson IACF Director

Born in 1931 and known for groundbreaking works such as The Hidden Face of Eve and Woman at Point Zero and translated from Arabic into over 40 languages, Nawal El Saadawi gives a short reflection and provocation on the legacy of Agatha Christie’s mysteries.
plus THE MYSTERY ORCHESTRA: TRIO OF MEN A song inspired from Devon’s most famous literary daughter, commissioned by the festival and composed and performed by Torbay’s wonderfully eclectic Trio of Men. Surprising, delicate, energetic and insurmountable, combining technologies old and new.

AGATHA: THE REAL LIFE OF AGATHA CHRISTIE 7.30pm-8.30pm, Spanish Barn, Torre Abbey French authors Anne Martinetti and Guillaume Lebeau discuss their 2016 graphic novel biography of Agatha’s life, a witty and refreshing portrait of an extraordinary life. The book takes in Christie’s childhood and the death of her beloved father; marriage; professional failures and triumphs; and her her fascination for travel and archaeology.
REVOLUTIONARY RIDE: LOIS PRYCE 9pm–10pm, Spanish Barn, Torre Abbey A mysterious note left on a motorcycle begins a mind-opening journey across the complexities and wonders of one of the countries Agatha Christie most loved - Iran. Author and travel writer Lois Pryce embarks on a 3,000 mile solo motorcycle journey exploring how Iran’s past has shaped its present, and how the West’s relations with the country have created an image that is wildly out of step with its reality – religious yet hedonistic, practical yet poetic, modern yet rooted in tradition.

EXHIBITION
Re-imagining Torre Abbey and its collections of art and archaeology, interventions through the galleries build a tapestry of connections to Agatha Christie’s work and influences. From original proofs of The Book of Job by William Blake to new work by artists Cullinan Richards, the wearable sculptures of Esna Su (see p.12), the early short films of Egyptian film-maker Ateyyat El-Abnoudy, an interactive room of objects by Encounters Arts and the performance installation of faulder-mawson & mawson-raffalt (see p.15), we trace connections across arts, archaeology, time & place. Pick up an exhibitions map at the box office for more information. Included in the programme by acclaimed documentary film-maker Ateyyat ElAbnoudy are her short films from the 1970s: The House of Mud, The Sad Song of Touha and The Sandwich. These pioneering films are rooted in the day-to-day rhythms, labour and humour of street life in the Egypt of the time. Work by local and regional artists also on display includes a selected exhibition from Artizan Gallery inspired by Agatha Christie’s 1946 memoir Come, Tell Me How You Live.
