This series, composed of gouache and pencil on paper, presents seductive surfaces contrasted by an unsettling narrative. The pyres, ditches, mummies and lethargic stiffened bodies anticipate a wholly foreboding vision, drenched in a longing that requires pacification. Collections of totemic figures echo the hardened corpse like characters, the employment of such totem figures and the use of decorative rugs and garments sets up the familiar adoption of material items used to deflect a deep sense of despondency. Patterned wounds appear on the character’s skins, not simply induced by a psychological anxiety, but in marks suggestive of ritualistic activity. Perhaps this is to appease some incommunicable appetite; for these characters though, the search is beyond what such material objects and rituals can offer. What they yearn for is ineffable and there seems resignation to ‘death in life’. Kushana Bush

MICHAEL SMITHER Untitled Oil on board 22 x 39 Signed & dated 1976 1,500 - 2,500

50 Lot 49: I decided to do something in the genre of 'cartoon referenced' painting. The dark figure with chair is Frizell's use of the Phantom. I added a female from a classic Roy Lichenstein piece to give it a conversation. The date of the work is the trough of our economic recession. I used the Phantoms despondent stance to convey a depressed artist who just can't get things happening. Hence the speech bubble - 'Forget it Dick, the recession will soon be over.' JS

The Waitangi Tribunal Tamakimakaurau Settlement Report dated 12 June 2007 identifies the artist as a “key player for Ngai Tai recommending that: as a matter of urgency the Crown shall do all it can to support other tangatawhenua groups in Tamakimakaurau so that they can enter into negotiations with the Crown to conclude their own Treaty settlements as soon as possible.

80 44

Recent paintings depict the 111 urgency claims; part of Ngai Tai customary interests that are recorded in the Maori Land Court Hauraki Minute Book III; Ngai Tai made submission to the Auckland Casino Control Authority regarding their waahi tapu interest in the downtown Auckland Railway Station site. Numeric synergy and deja vu.

89 This was painted at a time when I didn’t have representation for my work. Ironically, it didn’t hold me back on the use of paint. It is literally ‘caked on’ oil, no thickening medium , and in parts squeezed direct from the tube. The lookout from where it was sketched from is now inaccessible due to barbed

wire and the pool itself had had a lavish facelift. This painting is a time capsule of how my neighborhood was in the late 90’s - raw and a touch bohemian. Gentrification has brought a modern hotel on the esplanade corner where the steps in the painting are, and several upmarket cafes. JS 49

JUSTIN SUMMERTON St Clair from my Studio (Suburb) Oil on canvas 100 x 100 Signed & dated 2010 7,000 - 10,000

95 When I built my studio, with money from art sales in Auckland, the first thing I painted in it was the panoramic view. I still haven't made another painting from my house. The perspective is directly south, and if you continued over the horizon you'd eventually find yourself in Antarctica. Another heavy impasto

work from that period and even the clouds are heavily layered. I did much experimentation with clouds around this time, realising there was nothing you couldn't do with them to convey subjective aspects of the landscape. JS
