Karl Maughan is a New Zealand painter known for his realistic yet surreal depictions of blooming gardens and verdant parks. Though based in the tradition of pleinair painting—as inspired by Claude Monet’s paintings of his garden in Giverny—Maughan’s works are culled from a vast archive of images and film stills of gardens that he collages together and then paints with thick brushstrokes.
10 COLLECTABLE ART Wednesday 26 February 2020
His images present idyllic yet unsettling enclosed spaces, characterised by their claustrophobic and colourful atmosphere. Born in 1964 in Wellington, Maughan went on to study at the Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland. Working in London from 1994 to 2005, his works were acquired by the Arts Council of England and the Charles Saatchi Collection. Today, Maughan’s works are found in the collections of the Museum of New Zealand in Te Papa Tongarewa, among others.

This pattern making quality of the work takes precedence over the use of imagery or the necessity for a composition. The whole of the surface becomes an object in itself, there being no necessity for a hierarchy of objects within the aluminium frame.

Provenance: Private Collection, Auckland Purchased from Sacha Lehrfreund London 2008
John Reardon is known for his series of portraits featuring chefs taken for the Observer Food Monthly. This particular commission, based on Leonardo’s Last Supper is a fine example. The photograph is not a digital construct and was the only frame in which the brie cheese thrown by Marcus Wareing was captured hovering by chance for a fraction of a second over the head of chef Gordon Ramsay in the centre of the composition. The sitters were Tom Aikens, Raymond René Blanc, Michael Caines, Eric Chavot, Angela Hartnett, Atul Kochhar, Giorgio Locatelli, Shane Osborn, Gordon James Ramsay, the late Gary Rhodes and Michel Roux Jr. Each sitter was offered one of the thirteen prints in the edition. One copy was acquired by the National Portrait Gallery, London and another by a private collector, the present owner.

FIVE WORKS BY CHARLES MCPHEE 89
CHARLES MCPHEE (1910 - 2002) Elizabeth Tetuanui Oil on velvet 82 x 67 Signed, inscribed Elizabeth Tetuanui & dated 1959 $2,500 - 3,500
Charles McPhee was one of the first artists to paint on black velvet. He studied with the founder of this genre, American artist Edgar Leeteg (19041954). In the early years after WWII, painting on velvet was a unique new technique which enabled the artist to render life forms in a tactile and lifelike way. In the 1960s Charles McPhee enjoyed immense success and personal popularity. He was inundated with commissions and his exhibitions were sell outs.
89
Whilst studying with Leetag, Charles McPhee met Tahitian beauty and artist’s model, Elizabeth Tetuanui. Elizabeth became his wife and long-time muse. On returning to New Zealand they established their home and studio in the Waitakeres. A 1998 television documentary, Velvet Dreams, by award-winning Samoan director, Sima Urale featured the artist and his works. Charlies died at the age of 92.

The cubes in this work are in the position where in reality, the St Clair poles are. They go out to sea and if you stand in the middle, White Island is exactly between the poles. I used a skate deck to add to the playful concept, and it reflects the time I spent as a youth skating around the esplanade waiting for the tide to come in, or out, between surfs. Justin Summerton

Single Owner Auctions From time to time, the secondary market is fortunate enough to be exposed to one of those rare collections which transcends the value of its individual works of art, and stands to represent something iconic in its entirety. Our team is well-versed in the process of offering single-owner collections for sale, and take pride in the process of curating a single-owner sale when the opportunity arises. We offer a targeted marketing campaign and maximise the use of both electronic and print-based collateral to effectively showcase such collections to maximum effect. The strong networks we have established locally and internationally are reflected in some of the private collections which have been entrusted to us in recent years.
