Conditions of Sale & A Guide to Buyers The highest bidder shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute as to the bidding in respect of any lot, that lot may be offered again at the discretion of the auctioneer whose decision shall be absolute and final. The auctioneer has the right (i) to refuse any bid; (ii) to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion; (iii) to place a reserve on any lot; (iv) to place a bid or bids on behalf of the seller; (v) to withdraw any lot from sale; (vi) to require a successful bidder to pay forthwith the whole or any part of the purchase price. Each lot shall be paid for and removed at the buyers expense by no later than 4pm Friday 27 February 2015 unless otherwise arranged failing which the auctioneer and/or the seller shall have the right to forfeit any deposit paid by the buyer and to resell the lot either by public or private sale and any deficiency on costs of resale shall be borne by the defaulting buyer. No lot may be collected or paid for whilst auction is in progress. SUBJECT BIDS When the auctioneer declares a lot ‘subject’ this means the bid is below the set reserve and is subject to vendor accepting, rejecting or negotiating the bid. International Art Centre will endeavour to make contact with the vendor immediately after sale or the following day. If the bid is accepted, the highest bidder is obligated to make purchase. ESTIMATES Estimates are provided for each entry and act as a guide only. They are prepared well in advance of sale and are subject to revision at any time. 2014 at a Glance In 2014, 50% of the top 10 prices at auction were achieved by International Art Centre For the second consecutive year International Art Centre achieved the highest price for a painting sold at auction. In 2013 C F Goldie’s Kawhena fetch a record $732,000 and in 2014 his A Noble Relic of a Noble Race made $416,000. 2014 was a year of continuing success with International Art Centre achieving five of the top ten prices at auction. Highlights included September’s outstanding sale of works from the Fletcher Trust Collection. Seventy five of the seventy seven works offered have now sold. Raymond McIntyre’s Self Portrait fetched a record $103,000 and was one of three works by this artist sold in our 2014 sales. March saw his Untitled Lady in a Black Hat (Phyllis Cavendish) and Bois de Boulogne fetch $55,000 and $31,600 respectively. Another artist whose original works rarely appear at auction is Dame Eileen Mayo whose Sea Holly achieved a record $55,600. This memorable work was purchased from the Ilene and Laurence Dakin Bequest as a gift to Auckland Art Gallery. A further institutional acquisition was Felix Kelly’s The Kiln which fetched $14,070. A National Treasure tipped to draw keen bidding One of Australasia’s most famous war images, Simpson and his Donkey, sometimes titled The Man with the Donkey, has immortalised his deeds at Gallipoli and been widely reproduced as sculptures and memorials. Painted by Horace Moore-Jones, a New Zealander who took part in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force’s landing at Anzac Cove in Gallipoli. He made six versions of the painting, of which this is the last in private hands. However, the photograph he worked from is not of Simpson but of a New Zealand school teacher, Dick Henderson, who was a stretcher bearer in the New Zealand Medical Corps at Gallipoli. The John Perry Collection of mid 20th Century New Zealand Landscape Paintings Lots 1 - 25
Lot 23 Eric Lee Johnson I began collecting contemporary New Zealand art while still a student at Elam School of Art in the early 1960s. During that decade I purchased significant works by Colin McCahon [1962, 1965], Toss Woollaston [1965], Gordon Walters [1966] and Rita Angus [1969]. Although the foundation stones of my original collections have long been scattered, they have been replaced by a number of key works of equal power and intensity over the last forty years. These works have been painted largely by artists who through no fault of their own, have been somewhat overlooked, tending to fall through the cracks and fissures of our recently constructed art histories. Central to my collecting mid 20th century landscapes, has been a quest for works that reflect character, essence and spirit of a specific place at a particular time. In my collecting of New Zealand paintings I have endeavoured to avoid the stereotypical views of ‘our place’ so often promoted by old fashioned Government departments that we tend to associate with ''biscuit tin'' and ''chocolate box'' artworks.
