Urgent Signalling Survival of the Innocents Acrylic & oil on board 59 x 78 Signed & dated 1991 $8,000 - 12,000

The Child works are my responses to the confusion of some children with confusion indicated to them by parents - unwittingly - too many rules, too often. Parents fear/ embarrassment is reflected in these innocents who really have their own excellence for a time. Get intelligent now. Works have been made up from broken paintings of (mine) and are used in a reaction to the cleanism of Post-Modernism. Away from the precious, the tough is broken, veneer threatened, materials exposed and explored. The nails and staples are supposed to show. Invention and creative changing, formal and informal, invite the viewer to re-experience alterations. Disengage your old brain. Pat Hanly

BILL HAMMOND

Study Acrylic on paper 77 x 56 Signed, inscribed & dated 1998 $25,000 - 35,000

In the late 1990s, Bill Hammond’s work took on the stylistic fortitude for which it is most celebrated. Building on previous explorations of mythology, human interaction, cultural absurdity and ecology, the artist now sought to convey a visual language of dark imposition. This elegant study is characteristic of this period in his work, and in it we encounter the shadowy expression of the artist’s defined otherworldliness. In this work, Hammond navigates the immediacy of disconnection. Each elongated face appears as a masklike embodiment of alienation, frozen both in and through time; separate from the outline of the silhouetted bodies they inhabit.

It offers a snapshot of the dizzying world of anthropomorphism and fragile ecology which the artist inhabited, and through which he articulated his enigmatic turmoil. Paintings from this period in Hammond’s work were often set against the backdrop of darkly layered, lush green caves and forest scapes. The understated palette and medium of this study presents us with the rawness of its absence, leaving the viewer confronted by the wanting exchange of mask-like faces which bleed down over, through and into each other.

CHRIS CHARTERIS

Pacific Cross, 2005 Carved basalt 52 x 48 Signed & dated 2004 on base $10,000 - 15,000

Originally trained as a carver, Chris Charteris creates sculpted forms and body adornment. This freestanding pounamu piece, with its richly leafed gold cross, plays with the inherent differences pertaining to values in culture. Pounamu, long considered by Maori to denote status and authority, is teamed with gold leaf, the metallic lustre offset by the polished and the raw surface of the stone.

Gift or Cadeau, 1921, (1974) Iron and nails, edition 870/5000 17.8 x 9.4 x 12.6 Signed, inscribed & numbered $800 - 1,200 The Gift (Le Cadeau in French) is an early readymade by Man Ray, with the assistance of Erik Satie, consisting of an iron with fourteen thumb tacks glued to its sole, made in 1921 on the day of his first solo show in Paris. Gift is a conjunction of two alien objects. One represents domesticity and possibly femininity; the other represents carpentry and hence masculinity. This piece was made the same day it disappeared, and was meant to be a gift for the owner of the gallery it was being exhibited in. Unfortunately, it was stolen the same day. In 1974, Ray made the replicas of Gift as a limited edition. 114
