24 August Important & Rare highlights

Going Going Goldie! $433,000 incl. bp

A record for a small size Goldie portrait

C F Goldie fetched $370,000 plus buyers premium International Art Centre’s August Important & Rare auction held in our new premises at 202 Parnell Road exceeded expectations with sales in excess of $2 million, for the second time in 2016. Charles F Goldie’s In Doubt, painted in 1915, is further evidence of International Art Centre’s ongoing commitment to the Goldie and Maori portraiture market. After the record $1.175 million sale of Goldie’s Wharekauri Tahuna in our April auction the market continues to respond well. This small portrait, with an estimate of $250,000 - 350,000, quickly reached $370,000 on the floor - the third highest price for a painting in the New Zealand market in 2016. Another Goldie study went for $80,000. Action and excitement wasn’t confined to Goldie though as Peter Siddell’s Red Carpet, expected to sell between $60,000 - 80,000 climbed

from $50,000 to $110,000 in a matter of seconds. International Art Centre leads the Siddell market comfortably - and this catalogue includes a work aptly titled To Turner and comes through us from from the artist’s estate. Support was seen across all the market - Charles D Barraud’s oil Diamond Lake made $50,000 with another smaller work selling for $15,000. Michael Smither Cricket Match went for $52,500 and Bill Hammond’s Untitled II, a work on paper went for $64,000. Colin McCahon’s Waterfall sold for $300,000. A Ralph Hotere work on paper A Black Union Jack sold for $47,000 against it’s $30,000 - 40,000 estimate. Over 75% of the catalogue was sold which was an excellent start to our much admired new premises. Prices are fall of the hammer and attract buyers premium

International Art Centre’s Important & Rare auctions are the proven, preeminent mixed vendor sale category for major works offered through the New Zealand art market. As we fast approach our 50th year in business, experience continues to equal results. 2014 saw International Art Centre realise five of New Zealand’s top ten auction prices. 2015 saw new records set with the two top prices in Auckland achieved at our Important and Rare auctions. With the addition of the record 1.37million paid in April’s Goldie sale International Art Centre has now achieved the three highest art prices in a mixed vendor sale. With an appreciative, and greatly valued clientele of nationwide and international buyers and sellers we look forward to breaking new ground.

An Artweek Auckland Event Teresa H R Lane B(v)=(n01/1)v The theorem of how to harness auction fever

31 TERESA H R LANE B(v)=(n01/1)v The theorem how to harness auction fever Acrylic ink, archival digital ink on watercolour paper & collage on canvas 100 x 200 Signed & dated 2016 The visual story Teresa HR Lane presents, directly references her living experiences. Whilst she is an active participant, she also plays the role of observer, documenting the human form, celebrating the ordinary, and recognising the humorous and often perverse ways we interact with others. B(v) = (n-1/1)v The theorem of how to harness auction fever delves into the swirling emotions of the art auction floor – a passionate marketplace where the joy of the buyer’s elation is juxtaposed with the lament of those that missed out. Lane’s work examines the inflammatory nature of desire and captures the scent of competitive arousal.

As she questions, Am I important?, this emerging artist has decided – in the spirit of auction fever – to let the audience arbitrate the value of her work. She encourages bidders to examine their motives, asking them to consider whether the purchase is driven by taste, trend, risk, or simply a desire to own something unique that other people want. Her work will be go under the hammer unreserved, a ‘market is never wrong’ approach that encourages a direct value comparison with the work of the other New Zealand artists in the auction against significant New Zealand artists, as she encourages the buyer to decide value.

This work will be exhibited in the window of International Art Centre during Artweek Auckland. We request the buyer leave it on show until the completion of Artweek.

Following Tapper's 1980 exhibition The Law and It's People his legal series has become increasingly popular and sought-after. The series commenced with a commission received from the Auckland Law Society commemorating its centennial year. The Llb's, a stylish work, features four Auckland University law graduates in cap and gowns, about to make their mark on the 56

world. During this period Tapper produced his largest lithograph, The Crown Prosecutor. Pleased with the finished work, the artist says: Although its image was sketchily drawn, it was nevertheless full of the incidental of courtroom drama; beautifully drawn, without any hesitation. 82 JUSTIN SUMMERTON Whareakeake Oil on canvas 122 x 167 Signed & dated 2011 4,000 - 6,000 This is a local headland where I spend a lot of time surfing when the swell comes in from the north or easterly direction. It’s arguably the most famous surfing point in New Zealand. Whareakeake translates to ‘House of the land of hop bush’. For the local iwi it was a greenstone manufacturing centre. When the ‘Sofia’ - a sealing and whaling boat was anchored in the bay, a man named Tucker went ashore to barter for potatoes. He got a little more than he

bargained for. A year earlier he had bartered for a ‘baked head’ or a preserved maori head which he later sold in Sydney. On this new visit he was recognised by Te Matahaere (ancestor of Taiaroa) and attacked by the local tribe. He was bludgeoned to death. A battle ensued between the sofia crew and the local iwi which resulted in many deaths. This is why the Dunedin locals call the bay Murdering Bay. JS 2011

Lake Te Anau is in the southwestern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. The lake covers an area of 344 km², making it the second-largest lake by surface area in New Zealand and the largest in the South Island. It is the largest lake in Australasia by fresh water volume. The main body of the lake runs north-south, and is 65 km in length. Three large fiords form arms to the lake on its western flank: North Fiord, Middle Fiord and South Fiord. These are the only inland fiords that New Zealand has, the other 14 are out on the coast. Several small islands lie in the entrance to Middle Fiord, which forks partway along its length into northwest and southwest arms. The surface of the lake is at an altitude of 210 m. It has a maximum depth of 417 m, so much of its bed lies below sea level, with the deepest part of the lake being 226 metres below sea level. Several rivers feed the lake, of which the most important is the Eglinton River, which joins the lake from the east, opposite the entrance to North Fiord. The outflow is the Waiau River, which flows south for several kilometres into Lake Manapouri. The town of Te Anau lies at the south-eastern corner of the lake, close to the outflow.shore, where the Kepler and Murchison Mountains rise 1,400 m above the surface of the lake. Lake Te Anau was important for the Ngai Tahu iw in pre-European times as the area was a traditional stopping point on their trails between the east and west coasts of the South Island of New Zealand, where they obtained food and resources. The lake was first discovered by European explorers Charles Naim and William Stephen in 1852.

Olympia was a staged gallery tableau at Anna Bibby’s Claybrook Gallery in 1992, conceptually mimicking the famous Manet painting. Using real life models the naked Olympia and her black slave were successfully recreated, and from this setting I created my unique image complete with Rococo frame. She’s remained an obsession since. Paul Hartigan

Sale categories at International Art Centre Important & Rare Art

Modern & Contemporary Art

Important & Rare auctions are the proven, preeminent sale category for major works offered through the New Zealand art market three times annually. As we fast approach our 50th year in business, experience continues to equal results. 2014 saw Important & Rare auctions realise five of New Zealand's top ten auction prices. The following year saw new records set with the two top prices in Auckland achieved. With the addition of record prices paid in April's recent sale International Art Centre has now achieved the three highest art auction prices in New Zealand history. With an appreciative, and greatly valued clientele of nationwide and international buyers and sellers we look forward to breaking new ground.

Twice a year our Modern & Contemporary Art auctions play an integral role in enabling market access to the most sought-after artists who have defined New Zealand’s art narrative over the past 50-years. The sale never fails to present an exciting offering of both painting and sculpture by a range of our modern and contemporary greats. Spanning that vital period from the establishment of midcentury modernism through to the cutting edge of our national contemporary art discourse, this is an acclaimed and significant event in the auction calendar. Our new state-of-the-art premises will ensure contemporary art is now exhibited and auctioned in a dynamic and appropriate environment.

Always consigning / Always cataloguing Collectable & Affordable Art

Single Owner Auctions & Private Treaty Sales

The buzz generated by our regular Collectable Art auctions reflects the popularity of this sale: an event at which seasoned connoisseurs and budding collectors alike converge to appreciate one of the most eclectic and diverse offerings available to the market. Because this auction specifically caters to the more affordable end of the market - generally presenting works valued at $5,000 and less, this is an exciting opportunity to unearth some real treasures. Collectable Art auctions offer a number lower-priced works from highly-sought after artists in print and edition form, as well as quality works from artists whose presence on the secondary market is just beginning to crystallise.

From time to time, the secondary market is fortunate enough to be exposed to one of those rare collections which transcends the value of its individual works of art, and stands to represent something iconic in its entirety. Our team is well-versed in the process of offering singleowner collections for sale, and take pride in the process of curating a single-owner sale when the opportunity arises. We offer a targeted marketing campaign and maximise the use of both electronic and print-based collateral to effectively showcase such collections to maximum effect. The strong networks we have established locally and internationally are reflected in some of the private collections which have been entrusted to us in recent years, namely: the sale of the John Leech Collection, the Barry Pilcher Collection of Contemporary Art and a selection of works from the Fletcher Trust Collection.

Consign Now Luke Davies Ph +64 9 379 4010 E. luke@artcntr.co.nz

Decades of experience working with artists, vendors, collectors and institutions mean we possess a sound understanding of the best medium through which to present works to the auction market. For various reasons, you may consider it more appropriate or wish to sell an artwork privately, rather than presenting it publicly to the auction market. Guaranteeing confidence and discretion, our unparalleled and targeted access to a network of collectors means we are able to oversee private sales. For certain works, this has proven to be an especially effective method of sale; we encourage you to get in touch for an obligation-free discussion around the process and how we may best facilitate this.
