Born in Invercargill in 1949, Nigel Brown grew up in Tauranga and was fortunate to have the established artist Fred Graham as an art teacher at Tauranga Boys’ College. Between 1968 and 1971 he attended Elam School of Art, gaining valuable wisdom and inspiration from teachers Robert Ellis, Pat Hanly, Colin McCahon, Garth Tapper and Greer Twiss. Brown first began exhibiting in 1972 and his Lemon Tree series (1977) helped to consolidate his position in the art scene. In 1981, he was awarded a QEII Arts Council Grant for travel to the United States, the United Kingdom and Western Europe. On his return, the impact of the Springbok tour protests, as well as a period living with fellow neo-expressionist artist Philip Clairmont that same year, had a lasting impression on Brown. A founding member of the pressure group VAANA (Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms) in 1984, Brown’s paintings and prints of this period tackled relevant issues not only on nuclear weaponry but also on feminism and the peace movement. This culminated in his 1985 exhibition Living in the Bomb Age, at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Brown’s practice examines his direct and personal articulation of the realities of the human condition. He is profoundly aware of the relationship between human beings and their environment.

Symbolism such as the fern, black singlet, dog and driveway, James K. Baxter and Captain Cook, all reflect his experience, his observations and his beliefs. He has woven these into a complex web over a period of more than 40 years. In his early work he combined a tension and personal narrative centred on social issues in New Zealand topography. His later work included the socio-political world of the distinctly New South Pacific, while in his current practice, he continues to emphasise his vision of a New Zealand identity. Brown has also undertaken two significant stained glass window designs – St Mary’s Catholic Church, Auckland (1991) and Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell (1998). In 1998 he travelled to Antarctica as part of the inaugural ‘Artist to Antarctica’ programme. In the 2004 New Year Honours, Brown was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to painting and printmaking, and in 2005 Brown was awarded a three-week residency in Russia hosted by the New Zealand ambassador in Moscow.

Artist Misery teams up with Oxfam for a one-off art piece to transform lives in the Pacific World-famous New Zealand wall and pop artist Misery has joined forces with Oxfam New Zealand to fundraise for Oxfam's project providing clean drinking water and sanitisation in remote areas of Papua New Guinea. Oxfam will help provide life-saving and reliable clean water for 30,000 people across 12 communities in the Eastern Highlands province in Papua New Guinea. “It’s been an honour to collaborate with Oxfam on this special project... knowing many families in the Pacific aren’t as lucky as we are, and that they don’t have access to something as vital as water is a huge motivator. I’m glad to contribute to something that could have a huge impact on the lives of people living in poverty. I have so much admiration for the important work Oxfam is doing. I was inspired to paint a dreamy underwater seascape exploring Papua New Guinea’s magnificent coral reefs and sea life. My mother spent a large part of her childhood in PNG and has incredible memories of growing up there. Boating around Lae, swimming in crocodile infested waters and playing in the jungle. Painting this piece felt extra special as I was able to imagine what it may have been like for her as a little girl. I am forever inspired by the magic of nature and I'm so proud of this collaboration and excited to see our beautiful mural debut into the world, giving people the opportunity to be part of changing others’ lives for the better.”

Riwaka Wharf depicts one of the artist’s favourite views in the region that he called home. This lookout point in Motueka inspired a number of paintings and watercolours over the course of his career. The painting has been split into horizontal thirds consisting of the foreground, harbour background, and sky. By conforming to compositional norms in this way, Woollaston has achieved balance. His use of colour demonstrates a sound mastery of light and form, as well as the influence of European plein air impressionists such as Cezanne. The scene is bathed in a brilliant, intense sunshine, which further highlights the spirited brilliance of his technique: the deep, cool blue of the sea bridges the gap between the vast cloudy sky and the dry, earthy yellow of the land. More often than not Woollaston relied on browns, reds and yellows – that is, raw, earthy tones. The brilliant application of blue, red, green and yellow gives this painting a particularly energising, crystalline clarity. This view was dear to the artist’s heart. It is a snapshot from near where he first learned to paint, having moved to Mapua to work as a fruit-picker when he was 18. From this early stage in his career, Woollaston developed a special relationship with this part of the country to which he would return time and again in his work. In 1968 (two decades before Riwaka Wharf was painted), the artist had returned there and rediscovered the joy and inspiration of these scenes, at the same time launching his career as a full-time artist.

The creation of these works involved distilling land data, aerial perspectives and topographical information into painted patterns and symbols. City in a Dark Red Landscape is an intricate work. The bright red which permeates the scene can be interpreted as lava-like; bloody; of the earth. It resembles an urgent river of brake lights, and the light pollution of a city in flux. Through translating different impressions of perspective and landscape into a painted language, Ellis was able to compose elegant – albeit frenetic – symphonies of civilisation and infrastructure such as this one. The painting possesses a sense of both oppressive temporariness and deep-etched permanence: everything is changing, but at the same time, this cityscape feels like forever.

Knowing that Ellis spent time working as an aerial photographer in the Royal Air Force helps – it makes the work’s immense perspective more accessible. Looking through this aerial lens, we encounter the metamorphosis of a free flowing city. The clash of colour in City in a Dark Red Landscape is arresting and visceral; it seems as though the struggle between red and black is pushing against the limits of the painted medium. This feeling of evolution is intentional on the artist’s part. For Ellis, these paintings were a means of exploring ideas about universal urbanisation and city expansion. Specifically, they functioned as a commentary on the motorway development and urban transformation plans which had been underway in Auckland since the 1950s.

I/We Landscape relates to the I Am works painted at Cosy Nook, Southland. Pahia Hill features on horizon but this work relates in part to Arama Ave works of the 1970’s. I saw it as a kind of unlikely monument to I and We, two aspects of human awareness. Works such as this extend the work of McCahon back to more involvement in the human situation while reintroducing pictorial aspects abandoned by Modernist purism. A painting influenced by elements of a rough vernacular and sculptural awareness. NB

A mix of real objects and the imagination. One aspect of the isolated rural aspect I was living in at the time at Cosy Nook was to tap into a harsh mentality that was part of the New Zealand vernacular and laugh a little at it as well. Pulling your socks up was often conceived as the limited advice to those depressed, struggling or different. I’ve had a bit of fun imagining a brutal Heath Robinson machine. Portraits by William Henry Allen (1894 - 1988) From the collection of the Estate of artist’s daughter Sheila
William Henry Allen ((1894-1988) was one of a group of British art teachers recruited in the 1920s by William Sanderson La Trobe, the nation’s Superintendent of Technical Education, whose intention it was to greatly improve the quality of art education in New Zealand. W H Allen had attended London’s Royal College of Art from 1919 to 1923. His contemporaries there included Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth; fellow students Roland Hopkins, Jenny Campbell and Robert Nettleton Field also immigrated to New Zealand and became lifelong friends. The contribution of the La Trobe artists, particularly W H Allen and R N Field had an on-going and profound effect on the development of New Zealand art. Their teaching of early modernism opened the door to an avant-garde post-impressionist period in New Zealand’s art history. They influenced artists such as Toss Woollaston, Colin McCahon and Doris Lusk who embraced these new ideas, attitudes and techniques. Hocken Librarian Sharon Dell says the influence of W H Allen and his fellow La Trobe teachers produced landscapes and portraits in a style that was at first deeply unacceptable to painters and art societies in New Zealand - still entrenched in their Victorian style of art. W H Allen taught in Dunedin and Nelson. He was President of the Suter Art Gallery Society, teaching Workers Education Association (WEA) classes and participating in the Canterbury Summer Schools which attracted artists Doris Lusk and Leo Bensemann to Nelson. Colin McCahon and Toss Woollaston also regularly spent their summers there. After returning to England in the late 1930s, W H Allen’s art and reputation as a teacher were all but lost and until recently, little research done on his contribution to New Zealand art. Following the family’s return to England in 1946 W H Allen taught at the South West Essex School of Art, London, retiring in 1961.

In 2008 a significant collection of W H Allen’s work was repatriated from the United Kingdom and gifted to Dunedin’s Hocken Library. The Tui Rata Frowd bequest contained about 80 artworks including oil paintings and works on paper, and a large archival collection of letters, correspondence, photographs, catalogues and articles relating to William Allen. In 2015 the Hocken Library held a major exhibition, W H Allen & The La Trobe Effect. This exhibition shone a light on W H Allen’s contribution to the emergence of early regionalism in New Zealand. In addition to showcasing W H Allen’s practice the show included works by his La Trobe peers, several of Allen’s students and a sample of work by the early twentieth century British artists associated with the Camden Town Group whose post-impressionist style and subject matter inspired W H Allen, his peers and a swathe of this country’s regionalist painters. International Art Centre thank Robyn Notman and Sharon Dell of the Hocken Library for their assistance. Sheila Allen (W H Allen’s daughter) was born in New Zealand in 1926. She lived in Dunedin until aged four, when she moved with her mother, father and sister Tui, back to England for a new role for her father. The family returned to New Zealand for a teaching role in Nelson when she was seven - leaving again at age 20. She had told the University of Otago her childhood in New Zealand was idyllic, yet she returned again to live out her years in the UK, eventually having a career as an artist herself, training to be a silversmith in her 70s. Sheila died in early 2018.

Conditions of Sale and A Guide to Buyers The highest bidder shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute as to the bidding in respect of any lot, that lot may be offered again at the discretion of the auctioneer whose decision shall be absolute and final. The auctioneer has the right (i) to refuse any bid; (ii) to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion; (iii) to place a reserve on any lot; (iv) to place a bid or bids on behalf of the seller; (v) to withdraw any lot from sale; (vi) to require a successful bidder to pay forthwith the whole or any part of the purchase price. The auctioneer acts as the agent of the seller and neither he nor the seller shall be responsible for any defects or faults in any lot or for any errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot and no compensation shall be paid in respect of same. From the time of lot being sold, such lot will be the responsibility of the buyer. Successful bidders are required to pay for purchases immediately on completion of sale unless otherwise arranged. All intending buyers are required to register for a bidding number prior to auction commencing. Subscribers can use their permanent bidding number. We reserve the right to ask for identification if you are a first time client of International Art Centre. Each lot shall be paid for and removed at the buyers expense by no later than 5:00pm Friday 29 November 2019 unless otherwise arranged failing which the auctioneer and/or the seller shall have the right to forfeit any deposit paid by the buyer and to resell the lot either by public or private sale and any deficiency on costs of resale shall be borne by the defaulting buyer. No lot may be collected whilst auction is in progress. Payment can also not be made until completion of auction. SUBJECT BIDS When the auctioneer declares a lot ‘subject’ this means the bid is below the set reserve and is subject to vendor accepting, rejecting or negotiating the bid. International Art Centre will endeavour to make contact with the vendor immediately after sale or the following day. If the bid is accepted, the highest bidder is obligated to make purchase.

Please do not be offended if a member of our staff ask for your credit card details as security. Absentee bids can also be left via our website to registered members. Our website www.fineartauction.co.nz acts as a useful auxiliary to the catalogue but we recommend inspection or a condition report prior to leaving a bid. Our staff will gladly supply you with a condition report on any lot. TELEPHONE BIDS Telephone bidding available to subscribers and registered bidders. There is no charge for this service. PROTECTED OBJECTS ACT Art objects over 50 years old made by an artist or maker born in or related to New Zealand may be protected New Zealand objects, and therefore require permission from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage in order to be exported.
