NIGEL BROWN Life of Luxury - Deco Series Acrylic & oil on board 60 x 80 Signed & dated 2002 Inscribed verso $6,000 - 9,000
16 MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART 4 OCTOBER 2018
Life of Luxury was painted whilst the artist was living in Napier, the Art Deco capital of New Zealand. Brown was particularly intrigued with the architecture of the Riverton houses, seen in this work. A powerful central female cup-bearer, stylised tuis and other figures complete this pleasing tableaux.

20
NIGEL BROWN Deity Oil on board 63 x 83 Signed, inscribed & dated 2005 Inscribed Text from William Blake verso $5,000 - 8,000
Deity, inspired by British poet, painter and visionary William Blake (1757 - 1827) draws upon Browns’ own symbols as background to a central male/female fused figure. There is some reference to the landmark known as Old Man Rock, a nook of natural stone, and a Southland feature on the Foveaux Strait coast where the artist was living. Other key symbols, often seen in Brown’s works, include the heart, moon and native ponga tree. The text border is typical of a unique format developed by the artist over more than forty years.

NIGEL BROWN Auckland Mat (2) Oil on board 173 x 118 Signed, inscribed & dated 1985 $15,000 - 20,000
In this work the artist re-visits One Tree Hill, a landform which he first painted whilst studying at Elam School of Fine Art under Colin McCahon in 1969.
26
22 MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART 4 OCTOBER 2018
In Auckland Mat (2) we see One Tree Hill adopted as a motif in what is essentially a graphic arrangement inspired by a variety of indigenous visual influences such as Persian rugs, tapa cloth, icons and Aboriginal dot paintings. Once again, Brown creates a work in his own highly recognisable style with Rangitoto, the harbour bridge, ponga ferns and suburban houses all featuring.

90 Her life was fraught, and cash was short, baby farming eked a living, but by her touch, they died too much, there could be no forgiving. Little Eva and Dot, straight from the cot, sealed the fate that hanged her, her neck went crack, like the clickety clack, of a train which smelt of murder.
Laudenum and smothering, were Dean’s way of mothering, with trickery guile and daring, but who was to tell, beyond a faint smell, the bairns were well beyond caring.
