MYP & CCSS Alignment How do the philosophies align? Recommended practices? Vision for the future?

MYP & CCSS Alignment The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to

compete successfully in the global economy.

MYP & CCSS Alignment develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to

• The International Baccalaureate aims to

create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural

understanding and respect. • To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. • These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

MYP & CCSS Alignment From the California Department of Education’s CCSS for English

Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects 2013…

“*Students+ actively seek the wide, deep, and thoughtful engagement with high-quality literary and informational texts that builds knowledge, enlarges experience, and broadens worldviews. They reflexively demonstrate the cogent reasoning and use of evidence that is essential to both private deliberation and responsible citizenship in a democratic republic” (p.iv)

MYP & CCSS Alignment From the California Department of Education’s CCSS for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects 2013‌

[Students] come to understand other perspectives and cultures. Students appreciate that the twenty-first-century classroom and workplace are setting in which people from often widely divergent cultures and who represent diverse experiences and perspectives must learn to work together. Students actively seek to understand other perspectives and cultures through reading and listening, and they are able to communicate effectively with people of varied backgrounds (p.viii).

Developing a Plan

• Clearly articulate program alignment – one complements the other • Dedicate time for teachers to thoroughly read both CCSS and reacquaint with Subject Guides • Develop units of study based on new understanding of alignment; avoid trying to fit the CCSS into previously developed units of study • Use stepladder standards when possible to facilitate alignment

Developing a Plan • Rely on research, trusted entities for CCSS development • Teachers working as a Professional Learning Community • The Talking Teaching Network

Developing a Plan Construct a working document‌

Developing a Plan Incorporate into unit development‌

Link to Who Are You unit‌

Developing a Plan Working with math‌ • Consider the importance of the Standards for Mathematical Practice
