Welcome Back to The ICA Choice
Welcome to the renewed, revamped ICA Choice!
I recall many years ago, as a student and new graduate, going to DE [Dynamic Essentials]. Dr. Sid Williams would post and boast about the ICA Choice. Times changed, people changed—printed material faded away. The ICA Choice became a relic of the past.
But now—our beloved home office of the International Chiropractors Association sees the need to revivify this publication and I couldn't be more honored than to be the President at this time who gets to see it come back to life.
My hope is to see our fellow chiropractors wait in anticipation for this quarterly publication. Our hope is to bring forth ideas, testimonials, research, news, and so much more.
I want to thank the team at the ICA for seeing the need and taking the necessary steps to bring this project to life. I'm old enough to remember the "Mercedes 80's". I didn't get to practice until the end of that era, but I saw that period as a time of massive growth for our profession. I'm not thinking of insurance reimbursement, but of growth and of getting the message to the masses. The ICA Choice was a pearl of a publication that helped highlight the good within our profession and organization. With so much divisiveness and madness, negativity and sadness in this world, we need to bring back the good, the right, and the hope of what was, is, and will be.
We hope you enjoy what is inside and invite you to contribute if you feel drawn to do so.
May God bless you and keep you always.
Yours in Health,

The International Chiropractors Association (ICA) was established in 1926 in Davenport, Iowa by Dr. BJ Palmer who is known as the “developer” of chiropractic. Originally named the Chiropractic Health Bureau, Dr. Palmer established the organization to advance the profession, initially through educating state legislators and regulators about what chiropractic is and why doctors of chiropractic are a separate and distinct profession predicated on its unique philosophy, art, and science. As a result, the ICA helped gain official recognition and licensure in U.S. states and territory. Recognizing that the need for chiropractic is global, Dr. Palmer initiated a name change.
MISSION
To protect and promote chiropractic throughout the world as a distinct healthcare profession predicated upon its unique philosophy, science, and art of subluxation detection and correction
VISION
Empower humanity to optimal life expression, health, and human potential through specific and scientific chiropractic care.
VALUES
1. Respect
We acknowledge and honor the diverse perspectives and approaches in the practice of chiropractic and in promoting health, healing, and well-being We pledge to conduct ourselves with kindness, compassion, direct and honest communication
2. Equitability
We advocate for a healthcare system that is just, fair, and free from discrimination. We believe that all people should have equal access to services that promote health and wellbeing, including chiropractic care. We support the inclusion of all licensed health providers that are practicing within the scope and standards of their profession and advocate for compensation that is commensurate and fair for services provided.
3. Empowerment
We advocate for a health care system that gives people control of their own health and health promoting practices. We foster the development of health promoting capacity in individuals, organizations and health professions through education, knowledge and information, advocacy, access, communication, and collaboration
4. Collaboration
We are dedicated to working in respectful dialogue and supportive partnership with others to address the needs of individuals and society for better health and healthcare systems.

Going for Gold
How chiropractic helped dozens of elite athletes bring home the win
Dr. Peng Li
I graduated from Life University in 2012 with Doctor of Chiropractic and Master of Sports Chiropractic Degrees. I have been involved with the Chinese Olympic Committee for over 6 years representing chiropractors of Life University, as Life has had a collaborative agreement to provide chiropractic care to the Chinese Olympic Committee until 2022. It was a great honor to be with the Chinese Olympic delegation for the 2018 Asian Games for Rowing, Canoeing, and Kayaking. I also participated in the support team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for all sports and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics for Figure Skating and Speed Skating. This year, I covered Gymnastics, Trampoline, and Artistic Gymnastics during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Besides being available for any members of the team, I also provide care for a few individual athletes from different teams, including swimmers Yufei Zhang (pictured opposite), Haiyang Qin (pictured opposite), Jiajun Sun, and Jiayu Xu; race walker Hong Liu; long jumper Yuhao Shi; 3x3
Pictured above: Dr. Peng Li with Swimmer Haiyang Qin (winner of 1 gold medal & 1 silver medal); Dr. Li with basketball player Lili Wang; Dr. Li with swimmer Yufei Zhang (winner of 1 silver medal and 5 bronze medals) Pictured opposite, counterclockwise from top left: Dr. Li with gymnast Jingyuan Zou (winner of one gold medal & two silver medals)
Most of the athletes have been under regular chiropractic care for years. Swimmer Yufei Zhang received chiropractic care regularly during the Tokyo session and regular care for three months prior to Paris. Swimmer Haiyang Qin was also under chiropractic care in the months leading up to the games.
Canoeing athlete Hao Liu had experience of getting care before competing in the 2019 World Championship and won the first ever World Championship gold for China in his sport. He continued to receive chiropractic care before his race in Paris as well.
Among the athletes under care in Paris, there were three golds won (by five athletes), one silver (one athlete), and five bronzes (one athlete). Among the athletes who were under chiropractic before arriving in Paris, they won 12 golds (21 athletes), nine silvers (16 athletes) and 10 bronzes (14 athletes). Many other athletes participated who did not receive medals.
The National Institute of Sports Medicine of the Chinese Sports Ministry is looking to bring sports chiropractic into sports medicine in China. The Director of the Sports Medicine Department visited Life University in 2023 and plans to establish a Chiropractic Performance Center at the National Institute of Sports Medicine. We are looking forward to having chiropractic as a necessary component of sports medicine in Chinese competitive sports.
Entering our 99th Year, ICA Continues to Protect and Promote Chiropractic Worldwide
In 1926, Dr. B. J. Palmer, the Developer of chiropractic, established the Chiropractic Health Bureau (CHB). In 1941, by his direction, the CHB was renamed the International Chiropractors Association to more fully address the mission of protecting and promoting chiropractic throughout the world.
The ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius said, “Study the past if you would define the future.” ICA, as we prepare to enter our 99th year, is studying our past to be enriched as we plan for theffuture. Several issues stand out to me. For example, some in the profession attempt to relegate chiropractic specific terminology such as subluxation to the history books while attempting to homogenize chiropractic into the medical field — ICA leadership instead relishes, protects, and promotes that chiropractic is a separate and distinct profession with its own philosophy, science, and art.
Can and should chiropractors work within hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and integrative health centers side by side with other health professionals? Absolutely! At the same time, chiropractors are and should remain as point of care providers, not needing the supervision or referral of a medical doctor or other health professional.
This is not the case in certain US federal programs and in other countries. Our colleagues in Brazil, for instance, continue to work towards statutory recognition as a distinct healthcare profession, not as a subset of the physical therapy profession. The same type of restraint of trade battle in the USA that resulted in the legal case of Wilk v. AMA has been playing out for over two decades in Brazil, except this time, it is the physical therapy profession moving to keep chiropractic under its control.
When we recognize the importance of chiropractic as a system of healing rather than an adjunctive therapy to allopathic medicine, we realize the importance and the power that each of you as chiropractors truly hold in your hands. All of humanity benefits from the promotion of chiropractic world-wide as a distinct profession. All of humanity benefits when the profession stands together in protecting what makes chiropractic chiropractic identifying and correcting vertebral subluxations through the chiropractic adjustment. All of humanity benefits when the profession stands together in protecting the rights of chiropractors to utilize radiographic imaging as training allows, and as effective patient evaluation and management requires. All of humanity will benefit when chiropractic care truly becomes the first line of care rather than the care of last resort.
ICA has and always will support the development of statutory authority in every country that establishes chiro-practic as a distinct profession with appropriate standards for education and scope. ICA has and always will support keeping chiropractic in the lane of chiropractic.
I very much appreciate the entire ICA membership. Each of you who have joined the ICA are part of something truly special the organization established to protect and promote the profession worldwide. The first weekend in April 2025, we will be meeting in Clearwater, Florida. I invite you to attend our annual meeting and spend time with the Board, Assembly, and Council leadership and having your voice heard as we plan not just our 100th Anniversary Celebration, but the direction and goals of the ICA for the next 100 years
If you are a chiropractor anywhere in the world, or a chiropractic student and are not currently an ICA member, I invite you to join the ICA. Be a part of this incredible organization that will always stand up for chiropractic — be a part of the future of chiropractic.
Please enjoy this edition of The ICA Choice. If you would like to submit a story or press release for consideration in a future edition, please send an email to ICANews@chiropractic.org. We would love to get input from chiropractors across the profession.
I also want to share with you my appreciation for the ICA Board of Directors, in particular our current President, Dr. Selina Sigafoose-Jackson, and our immediate past President, Dr. Stephen Welsh. There are probably not two more different personality styles of people on the planet, but for decades, both have served the ICA and the profession with integrity, passion, and dedication. It is an honor to serve chiropractic, to serve the ICA with our leaders.
I also want to thank the incredible ICA home office team. They are dedicated, talented, hardworking, compassionate individuals who every day strive to achieve excellence.
Always,

The ICA Councils
The International Chiropractors Association’s (ICA’s) council system provides additional professional networking and state-of-the-art practice and patient-focused continuing education for clinical advancement in chiropractic. The council system also provides valuable opportunities and resources to develop and strengthen community leadership roles for its members. The ICA is a leader in providing ethical, academically sound, clinically relevant postgraduate programs, as well as continuing education for license renewal. All of the ICA programs are oriented toward expanding knowledge and expertise in the philosophy, science, and art of chiropractic in relation to the vertebral subluxation complex and its impact on health.
Check out updates from some of our councils - then check out the events on the following pages and register for something! We offer nothing but the best at each of our Council conferences, whether it be speakers, technique, or the members who attend - there’s something for everyone!
The Council’s programs, resources, and initiatives are dedicated to support the growth of the profession and advance its capacity to make profound changes in the health of the individual patient and the health of their communities. The foundations of the philosophical dynamics between intelligence, force & matter, and Chiropractic as a unique profession and professional paradigm hold powerful implications for today’s global health care climate. www.icaphilosophy.org
Philosophy is the connection… the bond, between our Art and our Science, it is THAT SOMETHING of our profession. I feel we can all agree with The Why of what you do and a depth of understanding creates the foundation for you as a chiropractor and your community will benefit from that.
The Council has made a commitment this year to creating more opportunities for Chiropractors and Students to either start or deepen their understanding of Chiropractic Philosophy by offering monthly
webinars, our yearly event in October and making every member on the Philosophy Board available for interactions.
This was all initiated because of the commitment of our previous board members and their passion for the profession, they solidified the foundation.
We look forward to seeing you all on our monthly webinars and our year end event in October in Minnesota.

On the Move
Since 1992 upon the formation of the Sports Council, the Chiropractic Profession has moved into a different kind of application focus. Somehow, what used to be a belief in the amazing changes available to athletes and patients alike has shifted away from adjustment as the primary tool for enhancing an athlete’s performance to a wide variety of applications. A significant change in belief has moved adjusting to the bottom of the list of treatment options. Many now claim titles of Master's Degree in Sports performance at the Chiropractic College level (formerly a Bachelor's Degree) with a focus in therapies utilized by Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers alike. As a Profession, these actions tend to blur the lines between what a D.C. does and others rooted with their own rich history in athlete care. These other practitioners / professionals feel the same irritation from the encroachment of the D.C. into their realm of services as the
Chiropractors did with intrusion of allied practitioners began “adjusting” their patients. Meanwhile, the public no longer knows what a Chiropractor does because now after earning a Degree in Chiropractic, the D.C. does literally everything under the sun but an adjustment!
Updated Council Mission:
Since the degeneration of the relationship between the ICA and the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic with the flagship event of the Annual Symposium on Natural Fitness & Sports after the debacle of the 2020 events involving the COVID crisis, interest in face-to-face engagement has waned as a method of gathering Chiropractors. Interpersonal relationships have moved away from the previous methods of networking and unification of the profession which gave everyone involved strength and conviction to the Chiropractic Profession and comprehension of the power of Chiropractic Adjustments!
Accessibility to these previously unapproachable well recognized Athletes and skilled providers formerly considered pillars in Professional and Amateur Sports through social media has created an environment where respect and honor have been replaced. Elevation of the inexperienced yet HIGHLY educated to an equivalent value in opinion even with lack of experience or skill is creating a false sense of security and falling short in the aid of athletes world-wide from the athlete’s perspective (I hear this from the athletes world-wide, especially
following a solid in-contest adjustment! The “WOW” is REAL upon appropriate application! Stay tuned for hard hitting interviews from them in future Sports Council podcasts with Dr. Huselbus). The costs of the creation of these events have become nearly impossible to finance, which adds to the challenges for organizers. With these developments and more, the creation of an opportunity to gather and protect Chiropractic from devolving and regression in athletes care demands a redesign in education approaches with updated formulation of reasoning and value focused proposals.
that now that the Chiropractic Profession is devolving especially in the arena of sports related care into a therapeutic oriented series of procedures relegating the Chiropractic adjustment as insignificant. So, a change is necessary with the opportunity to learn from those who have done it for many years in a wide array of sports-related venues and team variety. The ICA Council on Fitness & Sports Health Science is stepping up to create that valued opportunity!
Committee Members:
The advantage of being in the long game related to athlete care is the formation of
leading to qualified confidence in services rendered.
Adjust / Adjust
HANDS-ON is the theme that the updated sports council is offering! Reasoning for the gathering of Chiropractors should always be focused on the Chiropractic Adjustment as a primary tool to performance enhancement. The acquisition and reasoning for data collection which includes, but is not limited to the use of radiographic procedures with the utilization of the ICA’s P.C.C.R.P. Guidelines, should be a portion of the standard creating an environment of certainty regarding the treatment of the athletes and the appropriate cocare with other providers of higher skill level in their own arenas thus staying in the lane of expertise. One of the number one concerns for new D.C.s per conversations is that even with all the knowledge acquired through the Chiropractic education process, rarely has anyone “put it all together”. The ICA C.F.S.H.S. is on the move to create a solution which will strengthen the profession!
Change of Organization:
For many, the previous statements will be a hard “pill” to swallow. Especially when so many are making money with the applications taught with the inference of progressing the Chiropractic Profession into the 21st century, there’s little reason for those D.C.s to change! But, as an international care giver to strength athletes for nearly 30 years, and hearing it directly from the athletes themselves, it has NEVER been more evident
interpersonal relationships with other providers and the athletes themselves. The ICA C.F.S.H.S. has created a panel or committee of experienced members from sports arenas from bull riding, hockey, golf, strongman, powerlifting, profootball, to the little leagues! We are presently creating a venue of earning that encompasses sports at ALL levels with information that will assist the D.C. in many ways to care for their athletes with competence
Type of Adjustments:
A variety of unusal experiences combined with on-site critical clinical thing has been the true “mother of invention” for many seasoned sports care providers. The ICA Council on Fitness & Sports Health Science committee members are willing to share with YOU! The link below is an example of the power of the adjustment and integration of other providers in a real-world way.

Memberships / Certificates: Through learning experiences and the development of the clinical confidence of its members, the ICA Council on Fitness & Sports Health Science committee is IN PROCESS of creating Certificates for attendees which will focus on sports specific adjustment methodologies. There IS a difference required for the wide variety of athletes and the type of sports they participate with –a fact avoided leading to a false belief that all Chiropractic applications are the same and equal – which is silly when a provider finally understand the concept of right tool for the right circumstance!

So, write up your COOL STUFF and share it!
A little COOL STUFF before I go, this year was a year that started out with some of the most incredible cases I have had the pleasure of working with. Who would think that liver failure, brain injuries, strokes, hydrocephalus, and brachial plexus lesions would be the new patients of 2024. The outcomes for these children vary but positive improvement in quality of life always is the common thread when children receive chiropractic care. I am looking forward to sharing these cases in future ICA Review issues Please share yours

Chiropractic Adjustments Shown to Have a Positive Effect on Mild Cognitive Impairment
Unless you have been practicing under a rock, you should be aware of the amazing research that has been coming out on the impact of chiropractic care on various aspects of neurophysiological function and whole person health.
A recent study by Ziloochi, et al., [1] published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience in June of 2024 investigated the effects of chiropractic care on patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MCI is a clinical condition characterized by noticeable cognitive decline that is greater than expected for an individual's age but does not significantly interfere with daily life and activities. MCI serves as an intermediate stage between the cognitive changes associated with normal aging and more severe forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
Individuals with MCI typically experience memory deficits, difficulties with language, visuospatial abilities, or executive functions. These cognitive impairments are detectable through objective cognitive assessments but do not meet the criteria for dementia, as they do not severely impact daily functioning.
The etiology of MCI is reported to be multifactorial, involving a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Neurobiologically, MCI is
associated with early pathological changes in the brain, including amyloid-beta plaque deposition and neurofibrillary tangles, similar to those seen in AD but to a lesser extent. Additionally, there is often evidence of neuronal loss and brain atrophy, particularly in the hippocampus and other regions critical for memory and cognition. Early identification of
MCI relies on proper clinical evaluation, cognitive testing, and neuroimaging techniques. Identification of safe and effective early management options is crucial, as MCI can progress to AD or other dementias at a higher rate than the general population.
The authors of this paper and others have published on the impact of chiropractic care on sensorimotor processing, multimodal sensory processing, and cognitive tasks. This particular study examined the
effects of chiropractic adjustments on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in MCI patients. The study involved 26 MCI patients divided into two groups: a chiropractic intervention group and a control group, each comprising 13 individuals. EEG signals were recorded for both groups before and after the chiropractic adjustment.
A New Zealand registered chiropractor with five years of experience administered the spinal adjustments, using either high-velocity, low-amplitude maneuvers or low-force instrument assistance, as clinically indicated, on the spine or pelvic joints. Sites for spinal adjustment were chosen based on clinical indicators such as tenderness, restricted movement, and unusual joint play. Each chiropractic session lasted around 15 minutes and included adjustments at various spinal levels as necessary. The control group received a simulated adjustment, where the chiropractor passively moved the subject’s head, spine, and body without providing an adjustive thrust. This acted as a physiological control to account for any changes due to the movements involved in preparing for the chiropractic adjustment.
Sensitive statistical analysis of the data revealed that chiropractic adjustments had a more significant impact on the
frontal brain areas as compared to the control group. Additionally, interhemispheric coherence increased significantly post-adjustment across all regions. Intrahemispheric coherence changes were also significantly different between the two groups, particularly in the frontal-occipital, frontaltemporal, and right temporaloccipital regions. The relative power of the delta and theta bands decreased postchiropractic intervention, while the beta2 band increased, suggesting an improvement in MCI.
EEG coherence analysis showed increased synchrony in most brain areas post-chiropractic intervention. Interhemispheric coherence changes were significantly different between the groups across all frequency bands, and intrahemispheric coherence changes were notable in specific regions. These findings support the potential positive impact of chiropractic care on MCI and its possible role in mitigating the progression to AD. However, further research is necessary to solidify this relationship and fully understand the mechanisms involved. IN additions the longterm impact of chiropractic adjustments on EEG coherence, neurophysiological functioning and the impact on the development of AD and other forms of dementia over time.
Comparing the results of this study with previous research indicates that chiropractic adjustments may positively influence patients with MCI,
potentially slowing progression to Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Dementia, including AD, is characterized by a gradual decline in cognitive abilities and brain cell function. Early identification of MCI and AD is crucial for timely care, though there is no definitive diagnostic test for AD. Because MCI can be a precursor to AD, with a higher conversion rate compared to the typical elderly population, early detection of AD is important for practicing chiropractors to understand.
“These findings support the potential positive impact of chiropractic care on [mild cognitive impairment] and its possible role in mitigating the progression to [Alzheimer’s Disease].”

Mentorship Model for Chiropractic Students to Launch in 2024
Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) is implementing a student clinic mentorship model focused on further enriching the clinical learning experience. With this mentorship model, CUKC will be the first chiropractic institution to provide such a unique clinical educational experience for every student.
The new mentorship clinic is a major complement to the Doctor of Chiropractic program, providing students an earlier introduction to the patient-care learning experience beginning in their fifth of the 10-term program.
In small groups, the fifth- and sixth-term student interns will now observe licensed faculty clinicians providing patient care, progressing through a patient’s case history, performing examinations, presenting the report of findings, and initiating a trial of patient care. This provides a collaborative learning environment, allowing the student to observe and ask questions, as the faculty members model best practices through the various phases of patient care.
The seventh-term internship serves as a transition between the mentorship clinic experience and the senior-term Chiropractic Health Center internship, where the interns begin direct patient care as part of a team under the oversight of a faculty clinician. The student intern experience in the 8th trimester along with the final year of senior internship in the 9th and 10th trimesters is where the interns provide patient care under the supervision of a licensed clinical faculty member. Care is provided in the CUKC Chiropractic Health Center and the four affiliated remote community-based clinics in the Kansas City metro area, including the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Hospital.
According to Dr. Jon Wilson, dean of the CUKC College of Chiropractic, this model is structured to provide CUKC students with an earlier introduction to the comprehensive patient care experience and better prepare interns for their senior-level clinical experience.
“A key benefit of the mentorship clinic is that
students will observe an experienced faculty clinician providing best practice patient care midway in their D.C. curriculum, in preparation for their direct patient care experience in the Health Center,” Wilson said. “And that’s what will separate the CUKC College of Chiropractic clinical experience from those of other chiropractic programs.”

Dr. Mark Pfefer, director of research at CUKC, said the University had 10 presentations accepted for the conference and was represented there by seven of its researchers. He indicated that he received positive feedback from conference attendees about the quality and volume of work completed by the research team.
Calling all of the CUKC research “timely and rigorous,” Pfefer said one submission of interest was the work done by Dr. Steven Reece, an assistant professor at CUKC: “I was especially excited about Dr. Reece’s review of human motion assessment using inertial measurement systems,” Pfefer said. “This relates to the new equipment we have in our sports performance lab. We are beginning a line of clinical research using this equipment to assess functional changes in athletes and patients before and after
Congratulations to Dr. Brandi Childress and Dr. Shereffa Clarke for being reelected as President and Vice President, respectively, of the American Black Chiropractic Association.
