Hello 11th District Fellows, I have some good news and relevant updates from our Board of Regents meeting last spring in Portland,

3

Maine to share with you. The Board of Regents created, a couple of years ago, through a by-laws change, the Advertising Committee and the Membership Committee. Both of these committees have been very active in their infancy. The Membership Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Gerald Karr of Tennessee has developed an extensive plan of operations regarding membership and fellowship which will soon be developed into an online manual for all of us to use to help us identify, propose, and assist new Fellows throughout their association with ICD. Included in this plan are new tools (read job descrip-

tions) to assist District officers in fulfilling their responsibilities for ICD. The Advertising Committee is exploring opportunities to partner with corporate/business/individual sponsors and advertisers to provide more resources for our programs and to offset some of the costs of providing for a first-class convocation experience for our newly inducted Fellows. If you should have any leads or would like us to contact someone, please let me know. I would also invite you to

5

go online and explore the many programs and ways in which you can participate and serve. In addition to the above, we tried to distill what makes us, us. Once broken down to its essential element, what we came up with was simply “Serving Others”. We felt this really says it all with regard to what we all do as Fellows of the ICD. This will

If you ever get the chance, please thank all of these folks for their hard work and dedication to making this a great District and organization.

AWARDS

Dr. Nhi Pham and Dr. Gary Heyamoto

Dr. Gary Heyamoto was presented with the 2018 Special Recognition Award from the Snohomish County Dental Society on May 16th at the Mill Creek Country Club. The event was packed with so many people who came out to honor Gary including some future dentists from UW. Last year's recipient Nhi Pham, DDS presented the award (see left) and made the following remarks during his presentation: “Gary is special to me so I really wanted to do a great job introducing him. In my pursuit of this, the things I learned about him, his passions, and the history of his family brought me to tears. The two of us were emotional wrecks on the phone chatting late into the night. We can never forget our roots and where we came from. Especially the sacrifices that our parents have made that have given us every opportunity to be who we are today. Gary's parents met in the internment camp during WWII. Their families lost their farms and businesses because they couldn't make mortgage payments due to their forced relocation and incarceration in the Idaho camp. But of course Gary is able to find the light and reinforces that his existence is because fate allowed his mom and dad to meet there. I feel I am a better human being knowing someone like Gary.
