If you have an outstanding colleague whom you would like to recognize, please do not hesitate to approach him or her about becoming a Fellow of THE most prestigious, honorary Dental association ICD USA. Nomination instructions are posted in the website. The process is very simple; first a nominating note is sent to me. Next, the Candidate Information Form is filled out by your nominee and uploaded. Finally, a second letter of endorsement is submitted from a current Fellow who is acquainted with your nominee. That’s all there is to it. We have a new Treasurer. Fellow Deven Shroff has agreed to take over from Fellow Arpana Verma; as I am sure that most of you already know, Arpana has been appointed President of the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners. Congratulations, Arpana! Thank you for your many years of service. And thank you Deven, for stepping up. Deven’s first Treasurer’s report is included in this newsletter. As you can see, we
Life is slowly returning to normal. Hopefully, our Maryland Chapter will, as well.
We have not been able to hold our annual Fall business meeting for the last two years. Likewise, our combined meetings with the Maryland ACD Chapter have also been cancelled. In order to plan a dinner/meeting event for the early part of this year, we would have had to make monetary commitments in January which was right during the height of the Omicron variant spike. Painfully, we felt that we had no choice but to wait one more Asyear.of March 2022, the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) still required masks. Hopefully, we can resume our affiliation with their Practice Management Study Club and the student Global Health Initiative as the University of Maryland and Baltimore City restrictions are relaxed. As of yet, I have not been able to restart our Veterans Oral Health Program through Baltimore Station. I am in the process of moving to a new downtown clinic. Since this project has been dormant for over two years, it will take quite a bit of effort to restart it. Hopefully, we will be able to resume this Summer. I will again solicit for volunteer Dentists as soon as I am able to resume patient screening. Please stand by.

have about $30,000 in our accounts. I am certainly open to any suggestion as to how we may use this money. My only stipulation is that it be used to help those in need. One thought is to use part of it for lab expenses for our Veterans Project after it restarts. If you have any other ideas, please let me know. I sincerely hope that all of you have been able to stay well and professionally prosperous over the last two years. I look forward to restarting activities in our Chapter.

ICD ANNUAL STUDENT AWARDS
Each year, our ICD Maryland Chapter has the charge and honor of presenting three awards to deserving students at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD). The first award is presented in the Fall at the beginning of the Sophomore year to the student who achieved the highest overall average at the completion of Freshman year. The other two awards are presented to graduating Seniors at the annual “Night of the Stars” celebration just prior to graduation. In keeping with the ICD guiding values, these awards recognize Outstanding Leadership and Exceptional Humanitarian Service.
The George B. Clendenin Award is presented to that rising Sophomore student at the UMSOD who achieved the highest overall grade average at the completion of Freshman year. In addition to a commemorative plaque and an invitation to our annual meeting, a generous stipend funded from a grant from the Clendenin estate accompanies this award. The 2021 winner is Huizi Ren. Huizi was born and raised in China. She attended boarding school in Chicago and then studied at the University of Illinois. Congratulations to Huizi for being recognized as the outstanding student in last year’s Freshman class and all the best for your final three years.
The International College of Dentists USA Section is delighted to announce that it has partnered with Procter & Gamble Company in support of the annual Student Leadership Award. Both of these organizations have a deep commitment to recognizing leadership. This award honors a graduate who not only demonstrated conspicuous leadership during his/her student years but also has great potential to continue to do so. On behalf of the Officers and Regents of the International College of Dentists USA Section and the dedicated professionals at Procter & Gamble Company, it gives me great pleasure to present the ICD Student Leadership Award to Jonathan Ray Journett.

ICD/P&G Student Leadership Award (2022)
The International College of Dentists is a worldwide honorary organization. One of its objectives is recognition of meritorious service and significant contributions to our profession. This next award honors a graduate who not only exemplified and demonstrated passion for altruistic humanitarian service during his/her student years but also has great potential to continue to do so. On behalf of the Officers and Regents of the International College of Dentists USA Section, it gives me great pleasure to present the ICD Student Humanitarian Award to Ilana Michelle Goldberg (picture on next page).
In the Fall of 2015, the Maryland Chapter of the International College of Dentists chose to resume a professional service project that had been discontinued with the University of Maryland. Each Winter, the emphasis of the Professionalism course for the third year students was on Ethics. In earlier years, in collaboration with Dr. James Rule, Maryland ICD Fellows mentored discussions of ethical case studies with the students. The practice was discontinued upon his death, but was resumed under the coordination of Dr. Vanessa Benavent (now an ICD Fellow). In 2017, Dr. Fotini Anagnostopoulos King assumed that responsibility and has continued in that role. Each year, a cadre of ICD Fellows, in collaboration with Fellows of the American College of Dentists (ACD) and University of Maryland (UMSOD) faculty members, have served as mentors for those discussions. As with so many other educational activities, that was limited to virtual, online participation in 2020 and 2021, but in-person involvement was resumed this year. ICD Fellows who provided this
