PRESIDENT
Gerald R. Karr, DDS Nashville, Tennessee
Gerald (Jerry) R. Karr retired from orthodontics in September 2018 after forty-four years in practice. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1974 where he was a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Fraternity and as a senior, he was awarded the Faculty Award, the Psi Omega Scholastic Achievement Award, the Alpha Omega Scholastic Excellence Award, and the Certificate of Honor. He graduated with a Master of Science in Orthodontics in June 1976. Because he had been deferred from military service since 1970, he was drafted immediately after graduation. He served for three years at Spangdahlem Air Force Base in Germany as the orthodontist for three regional dental clinics. Being stationed in Europe opened many opportunities to travel and that love of traveling has remained a large part of his family life ever since. In 1979 Dr. Karr bought the practice of retiring orthodontist, William Beaumont in Clarksville, Tennessee. That practice grew and expanded to two locations with two full time orthodontists. Since joining the ADA right after his graduation in 1974, Dr. Karr became immediately active in organized dentistry. He served as TDA Speaker of the House for six years and four years as the editor of the TDA Journal. He has had numerous articles and editorials published, and he is the recipient of the TDA Fellowship Award and the TNAGD Humanitarian Award. He and Sandra had the privilege of accompanying past ADA President, Malcolm Overby, as part of a delegation to the USSR to study the state of dentistry in the Soviet Union. Dr. Karr has been a Fellow in the ICD since 1994 and is also a Fellow of the ACD and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. As a Regent and, now as an officer, he had the opportunity to chair numerous ICD USA committees and task forces, including the Projects Committee, Membership Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Governance Committee, and Executive Committee. As Chair of the Membership Committee, he developed a Strategic Plan for Membership Recruitment and Retention and authored the USA Membership Recruitment and Retention Manual. Dr. Karr has been married for over 53 years to his childhood sweetheart, Sandra. They have three married children and seven grandchildren under the age of 8. They enjoy many things together including grandkids, Bible study, travel, motorcycling and, most recently, 4x4 overlanding. The Karr family supports the ICD’s motto “Serving Others”. He has served as Chair of the Good Samaritan Clinic which provides dental care for the underserved of Montgomery County, Tennessee. Dr. Karr sees his opportunities to serve on overseas missions as the most satisfying part of his dental career. From 1983 to 2012 he and Sandra and their children made many dental mission trips to Honduras, Brazil, Ghana, and Southeast China.
PRESIDENT-ELECT

In 2001, she started her own practice in Lakehills, TX where she has been an active member of the community, serving as a Mission Dentist for many years; serving the community as a Lay Minister of the Methodist Church and volunteering at the local food bank and homeowners association. Being committed to serving in organized dentistry, Dr. Martin was inducted into the International College of Dentists in 2002. In 2008, she organized and directed the Great Expectations Mentoring Program for the San Antonio area. This wonderful program continues at the dental schools in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. She is a Past President of the American Association of Women Dentists and Smiles for Success Foundation. Dr. Martin also served the ADA on several committees, yet the highlight was as local chair of the ADA 2014 meeting in San Antonio with a Mission of Mercy event included. Her dedication to dentistry was further recognized in 2012, Dr. Martin was named the Texas AGD Dentist of the Year. In 2011, the ADA recognized her leadership and awarded her the prestigious Golden Apple Award. The American Association of Women Dentists proudly presented their most prestigious award, the Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award by the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) in 2014 on the basis of achievement in civic, cultural, humanitarian and academic areas for significant service to dentistry. She has also been the recipient of four distinguished Presidential Awards from the San Antonio District Dental Society. Risé has been a member of the Christian Medical Dental Association for 27 years taking dental students on mission trips around the world. Her husband, Sam enjoys these mission trips as well. He is a graduate from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Science and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry. Dr. Fridh was awarded a General Practice Residency with the United States Air Force. During his residency in Biloxi, Mississippi, his dissertation on the Effects of Fluoridation was adopted by the Air Force as an official publication. He then served as Chief of Dental Operations at Baudette Air Force Station in Minnesota where he was instrumental in developing a Certified Dental Assistant Training program at the base. He was awarded a medal for meritorious service for his years of service with the USAF. Dr. Fridh is a past treasurer and past president of the Indiana Dental Association, a member of American Dental Association, a past president of Northwest Indiana Dental Society, and a member and past president of La Porte County Dental Society. Dr. Fridh founded Operation: Stand Down in November of 2012, a program to provide free dental care for US veterans who have not been able to afford needed care. He has recruited several area dentists to volunteer their time and efforts to examine, draw up a treatment plan and treat these veterans at no cost. He has also assisted dentists in Greenwood, South Bend, and Gary, Indiana, as well as Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and North Dakota in organizing veterans’ programs for their areas. He continues to share planning information for projects around the country. This project was recently endorsed by the International College of Dentists as a humanitarian project, and Dr. Fridh produced a virtual CE course on Operation: Stand Down for the Greater New York Dental Meeting, November 2020. Dr. Fridh is a past president and active member of the La Porte chapter of Kiwanis International. Through Kiwanis he cofounded The Neutral Zone, a teen center for at-risk kids. Dr. Fridh has been married to Marti for 48 years and they have three daughters, Erin, Lindsay, and Ashley.
MASTER FELLOW (POSTHUMOUS 2021)
Bettie R. McKaig, DDS Raleigh, North Carolina
Dr. Bettie R. McKaig’s service to the ICD USA Section began in 2005 when she was appointed as the District 16 North Carolina Deputy Regent, Treasurer and Leadership Coordinator. She continuously served in three District 16 positions through 2018, relinquishing only her role as Deputy Regent when she was elected as the District 16 Vice Regent (2013-2014), followed by a four-year term as the District 16 Regent (2015-2018). During her tenure, she was instrumental in creating and growing the esteemed Bettie R. McKaig International Student Experience Program. Concurrent to her ICD USA Section responsibilities, Dr. McKaig began serving as a Councilor for the Worldwide College in 2011 and subsequently served in numerous important roles for the College, including Ad Hoc Strategic Planning Co-Chair, Membership Committee Chair and Awards Committee Chair. She eventually served as Strategic Plan Liaison to the Executive Committee, which was a new and vital role positioned to maintain the College Strategic Plan that was implemented by Bettie just one year prior. Her dedication and leadership skills were recognized at that level, culminating in her election as the first female ICD International President in 2019. During Bettie's presidential year, she led a strong campaign to revitalize the ICD Strategic Plan into a framework of organizational directives. She diligently contributed hours of her time into creative thinking, strategic discussions, and committee meetings, all to produce goals and objectives that would lead the College into its next century of success. Bettie was a lifelong leader in organized dentistry and her list of accolades in the ADA, North Carolina Dental Society, North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners, and many other professional organizations, is too long to list. Many times, Bettie’s accomplishments are preceded by the “first woman”, which indicates what a true leader she was and how she spent her life advocating for women in dentistry to move to the forefront and develop a voice in organized dentistry. She was a special teacher and educator at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry as an adjunct professor where her impact with students lasted long after they graduated. They felt her strong caring and would often reach out to her when important professional and life decisions came up. With all her professional accomplishments, Bettie’s character was what made her special. She loved people and she genuinely was interested in the lives of her friends and family. She had a special way of inspiring people with whom she came in contact to raise themselves to new levels. She was a strong advocate for pursuing excellence in all areas of life. She was a lifelong travel adventurer who traveled because she loved the interactions with the special people she would encounter.
