by De’Ja Alexander; UNC Dentistry, Class of 2018 Each year a group of Dentists and UNC Dental students, led by Dr. Stephen Mackler and Dr. Burton Horwitz go to Moldova to treat underprivileged children for their dental needs. This year Drs. Mackler and Horwitz were accompanied by Drs. Cheryl Siegel, Nazir Ahmad, and Shamik Vakil on a dental mission to Moldova. Joining them on this mission trip were six dental students from The University of North Carolina: David Guo, Haldis Anderson, Deja Alexander, Meredith Perdue, Beth Haymore, and Sarah Strickland. Also joining on this mission trip were two Dental Assistants from Dr. Horwitz's practice, Kelli George and Laura Ingle. Muriel Gantman, Dr Horwitz's business manager, coordinated this mission and developed the itinerary.

children along with children from the Straseni orphanage. In addition, we lectured on various dental subjects, to the student body of the Moldovan dental school. This mission was dually devoted to treatment and teaching. In this way, we hope that our mission has a lasting effect on the future dental health of the country. This mission started in 2000 with Dr. Stephen Mackler and Dr. Robert Kriegsman and has been continued with Drs. Mackler, Horwitz and others. This mission has been supported by the International College of Dentists and individual donations. The doctors pay their own expenses and the students earn their expenses through fundraising projects.
