The inaugural competition—with horses ridden in a bridle— added steer stopping to the European Reined Cow Horse events; a first for those that show in NRCHA approved events on the Old Continent. Three horse-rider combinations who typically show in Europe’s roping events dared to run down the fence. As NRCHA and Professional Blue Allen put it; “It’s great to be here and wonderful to see our sport grow worldwide. I understand the constraints here make it tough, but thanks to the options such as the breakaway rope where the horse, riding, and stopping are judged without turning the steer, has made this event possible here also,” shared Allen. “Having 15 duos entered in this European first is absolutely amazing. In the very first NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman, there were between 15 to 20 horses entered; now there are around 70. I am certain it will grow here too.”
For the very first time in the history of reined cow horses, a group of passionate cow horse enthusiasts had the guts to bring ‘The Greatest’ beyond the big pond. Elisa Ferrari of Samisa Ranch and Chiara Milani of International Horse Press brought together 15 great riders representing five nations, great horses, and great owners who dared, making the very first SR Four Crown Spectacular a success.

Successful Italian professional Giovanni Campanaro of Italy riding Hot As Wasabi, a 2014 American Quarter Horse mare sired by Little Dulces Rey out of Whirlacat owned by Sarah Destefanis took the NRCHA Open title; Samuele Poli Barberis, also from Italy, rode Cats Got Freckles a 2010 American Quarter Horse stallion sired by WR This Cats Smart out of Playboys Girl owned by Luca Terzi, to Reserve honors; Germany’s Arno Gorgasser rode his own Beat This Kat a 2015 American Quarter Horse mare sired by WR This Cats King out of Beat This Enterprise, claiming third place. As riders now have a new goal to set in preparing their mounts to show, in a bridle, in the 4 event competition, we look forward to seeing entries grow in 2023. Stay tuned!

Gabriele Poli Barberis of Italy and Samisa Ranch's 13-year-old stallion Highbrowfletch (Royal Fletch x Lil Sally Cat) closed the last of the four events required in 'Europe’s Greatest’ - the Steer Stopping - with a 69 score and a 281.5 total composite claiming the inaugural National Reined Cow Horse Association/ERCHA Non Pro SR Four Crown Spectacular Championship. “I’m really happy with the result we achieved here, in this great inaugural event. My horse is really complete, very athletic and strong, and always helps me out in the arena. He’s simply amazing,” said Gabriele.
Taking reserve honors was Marie Mura of France and her 6-yearold gelding Woody Choco Pepto (Stylin Dual x Mamaws Little Pepto). The duo topped the scoreboard in the inaugural non pro steer stopping with a 71 as well as the rein work with a 69.5. “I’m really happy with showing my horse here in particular because we started showing him in a bridle this year, so this show fell at the right time,” said Mura. “I look forward to next year’s event as he did really well for me and always takes care of Thirdme.”place honors went to Austria's Andrea Popp riding her 6-year-old gelding One Smart Sultan (Two Play To x Avril Smart Play). #facts In 2007, Allen rode Whiskey Starlight to the Reserve World Championship. The following year at the NRCHA Futurity in Reno, he made the Limited Open Futurity Finals on Mister Kat, won the Limited Open Bridle on Chex Peppy Pistol and was Reserve Limited Open champion on Whiskey Starlight. In 2009 he was once again a World Champion in San Angelo, on Chex Peppy Pistol in the Limited Open Bridle and Reserve Champion on Double R Wrightway.

Based out of Alamosa, Colorado, where he lives with his wife, Jeannie and son, Caden, Allen went from cowboying to team roping to rodeoing before settling down to work with reined cow horses. “I moved to reined cow horse because it truly is a premier horse event. The ‘Greatest’ is the pinnacle of all horse events as you have to show your horse in four disciplines and this shows the horse’s athletic ability and versatility,” he continued. “Due to past injuries, I have not been able to show much lately, but being an NRCHA judge allows me to be part of the sport I love. You get to see a lot of good runs, good horses and different styles. I am looking forward to judging the inaugural European Greatest: The very first horse-rider to win here is making history.”
