THE HEALING TOUCH

THE LUNG & THE LARGE INTESTINE

By Joe Miller

The Lung (LU) and Large Intestine (LI) meridians are paired in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Japanese Shiatsu because they work together as complementary aspects of the body’s energy flow.

In TCM, and Japanese Shiatsu the lung and large intestine are considered to be part of the Metal element, representing purification and release.

Lung Meridian (LU)

• The Lung meridian is responsible for governing respiration and controlling the intake of energy from the air. It’s involved in the function of the respiratory system, the immune system, and the distribution of protective energy around the body.

The Lung meridian runs from the chest, through the inner arm, and ends at the thumb.

• It is also associated with emotions such as grief and the ability to “let go.”

Large Intestine Meridian (LI)

• The Large Intestine meridian governs the excretion of waste from the body. It deals with letting go of what is no longer needed, both physically and emotionally.

• This meridian runs from the index finger, up the arm, and to the side of the nose.

• Like the Lung meridian, it’s also associated with the Metal element and complements the Lung meridian by helping to rid the body of toxins, much like the lung releases carbon dioxide.
