FIS SnowKidz is the first phase of a campaign initiated by FIS in November 2007 called ‘Bring Children to the Snow’. FIS SnowKidz is aimed at children and their families and seeks to include everyone from all age groups in enjoying snow for years to come. For more information about FIS SnowKidz please visit the official website at www.snowkidz.com. FIS would like all participants of FIS SnowKidz events to enjoy, explore and experience something truly special and unique. This Cookbook has been created to help you, the event organiser, develop your idea for your FIS SnowKidz event. Please note these events are not static. The ideas listed in this book are just that, ideas. FIS strongly encourages you to be creative with your event as long as your goal remains to bring children to the snow. ABOUT FREESTYLE MASTER CLASS Freestyle skiing and snowboarding has become a very popular snow sport discipline. Many children want to try freestyle skiing and snowboarding however it can be a little scary. This book aims at providing some helpful tips and hints about establishing a freestyle master class within your existing ski school.

Introduction

ABOUT THIS BOOK

ENGAGING SCHOOLS Schools are an important place for children to gain an education and develop a healthy and active lifestyle. When creating your event make sure to actively approach your local schools. Invite children to participate in your event and in doing so you will find an increase in participation. The school will be benefiting by offering a healthy and fun activity to their students.

SAFETY We like to make sure the participants at events are safe. When creating your event remember to have a First Aid kit and some who is trained in First Aid onsite. Furthermore ensure you have contact to emergency services. This can be as simple as making sure your mobile phone has reception and the emergency number in your country is entered into your phone. Finally ensure all participants conducting skiing or snowboard are wearing helmets! TRANSPORT Transport is a major factor in getting people to the location. Link up with your local bus and/or train company to organise a special price for tickets, to get the children to and from the location. Remember to tell the transport company that if participants use their services now and the children enjoy the trip, there is good chance the children will continue to use their services in the future.

STEP 1: Choose Your Location

Method

Choosing a location is simple. First step is to find out if your local ski resort constructs a freestyle park. If the answer is ‘yes’ check if they have a beginners section or ‘small line’. If there answer is ‘yes’ once again then you have your location.

STEP 2: Set up The Freestyle master classes will feature four elements in your class.

Element 1 - What is Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding

Method

For some people the idea of freestyle skiing and snowboarding is a little vauge. This section of the class involves showing the children some examples of freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Going out on the mountain and showing children some tricks by a professional is a great way to do this.

Element 2 - Features of the park

Method

There are many features inside a freestyle park. All of the features have different names from kickers, hips, rails, butter boxes, down rail, battleship rail, half pipe, rollers and banks just to name a few. For many people the feature looks great but they have little idea of how to use it. Introduce your students to the different features and show them how to approach a feature.

Element 3 - Safety in the park

Method

Safety is of the upmost importance when freestyle skiing or snowboarding. Firstly ensure all your participants are wearing helments. Next, take them into the park and highlight safety in the park. For example never stand in a position where you can’t be seen such as a jump landing. You can download the 10 FIS Rules of Conduct of Skiers and Snowboarders to help illustrate your explinations.

Element 4 - Basics of freestyle skiing and snowboarding

Method

Jumping, rail riding and spinning are all great tricks to do in the freestyle park but each of them have a starting point. During your Freestyle Master Class show your students the basics required to initiate these tricks. Once the basics are completed most students will go on to learn their own tricks and develop their own style.
